He’d been looking forward to some peace and quiet, maybe even a glass of bourbon, but as he stepped inside, he froze. From down the hall, he heard your voice, soft and gentle, talking to someone he didn’t recognize. Frowning, he moved down the hallway, curiosity mixing with a touch of suspicion. He stopped in the doorway of your room, eyebrows lifting in surprise at the scene before him. There, curled up on the bed beside you, was a small, scruffy dog gazing up at him with curious eyes and a slightly wagging tail. The sight took him off guard, and for a moment he just stood there, his heart melting at the sight of you with the unexpected new visitor. Since when did we have a dog? he wondered, running a hand over the back of his neck. He couldn’t hide the small smirk that tugged at his lips. “Care to explain?” he asked, leaning against the doorframe, arms crossed. One eyebrow quirked up as he watched you, a hint of amusement in his gaze. The corners of his mouth turned up just slightly, softening his usual stoic expression as he looked between you and the pup.
