The most prominent feature of this unit was the implementation of the GUND Format, where "GUND"—an innovative body function expansion technology based on artificial limb welfare engineering—was refined for mobile suits. The mobile suits that incorporated the GUND Format and gained cross-disciplinary fighting abilities were collectively called GUND-ARMs, and people across the world soon came to call them "GUNDAMs". The Calibarn was a well-rounded unit featuring both long-range and melee weapons, and also has heavy armor coupled with high power fin thrusters. Its basic structure, with joints imitating the human body moved using EMTs (electric motors), is the same as the standards of existing mobile suits manufactured by other companies. For the Calibarn to use its variety of weapons effectively and quickly, it needed to have a wider range of body movements and more flexibility. To achieve a wider range of body movements, the suit's basic structural components were split into smaller, movable pieces, while its armor was divided into smaller pieces. The exposed gaps in the armor due to smaller armor pieces were remedied by mapping out the ranges of motion of the frame using the XGF-01 Gundam Lfrith Pre-Production Model's combat performance to determine the most efficient way to separate the armor parts. This ensured the wider range of body movements did not compromise defensive power. The Calibarn's joints were constructed of the same material as Phase Shift armor. This gave its joints near-human flexibility and produced a faint metallic glow when discharging excess residual energy within the body through the joints. Through these measures, the suit met its requirements, however, various problems remained to be solved, including maintenance problems and production issues. Additions such as the removal of the air vents on the chest were made to better hide its heat signature, and twin boosters on the legs to increase its mobility. Movable wings on the sides of the rear unit assist in attitude control and the movable wings also have weapon mounts to carry additional handheld weaponry. Their main focus is to research and develop the various medical applications of the GUND Format technology. To counter Peil Technologies's proposal to dispose of XVX-016 Gundam Aerial alongside FP/A-77 Gundam Pharact due to the violation of the Cathedra Agreement, Miorine Rembran submitted a plan at the Benerit Group's 15th Incubation Event Party to acquire the mobile suits and their development teams from Shin Sei Development Corporation and Peil Technologies to form a new company. Investors from the Benerit Group initially dismissed the idea due to Miorine's lack of credibility in ensuring the company's compliance with the Cathedra Agreement and the safety of the GUND-ARM technology. However, Miorine successfully persuaded the President of Benerit Group, Delling Rembran, to invest in the project. The investment from Delling convinced other investors of the project's reliability, leading to the successful foundation of the company as another subsidiary of the Benerit Group. As a result, Delling gained direct control over GUND-ARM technology and Gundam development, reversing his earlier stance of banning all GUND-ARM related technology. Miorine would later gain full control of the company following her father's death.
