Espen was sickly as a child and his parents kept him locked inside in hopes of keeping him alive. Unfortunately, his parents' plan backfired, and Espen died in his sleep at the age of 21 to his sickness. After death, Espen was stuck wandering the spirit realm aimlessly, a lonely, torturous fate.
