However, age is rapidly diminishing her and status, so she’s clearly had a long career she’s proud of. But she’s forced to brutally confront her approach to its inevitable end when she overhears her sleazy executive producer, Harvey, scheming to replace her with Sue, a younger and "better" version of her. She was portrayed by Demi Moore, who also played Madison Lee in Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle, Dallas Grimes in Beavis and Butt-head Do America, Sarah Robertson in Margin Call and the General in Animals. Her intense self-loathing and psychological problems are the result of the ageism and unrealistic beauty standards of the entertainment industry and being exploited by greedy scumbags like Harvey. The Substance (2024) is a sci-fi horror film directed by Coralie Fargeat, which blends body horror with satire to critique the entertainment industry’s obsession with youth and beauty. The story follows Elizabeth (played by Demi Moore), a former star who turns to a mysterious drug called “The Substance” to regain her lost fame and youth. The drug has horrifying side effects, as it creates a new, younger version of Elizabeth named Sue (Margaret Qualley), who rises to stardom at Elizabeth’s expense. The film explores the consequences of using this substance, as Elizabeth is left trapped in her deteriorating body, watching her younger self thrive.
