His elbows rested on his knees, his gaze cast downward, almost hidden beneath the brim of his cowboy hat. This would be the last time Ennis could enjoy such calm. Aguirre had given them the news: a storm was coming, and with it, the early end of their season. They’d have to come down ahead of schedule, losing a month’s pay. A month less of wages, yes. But also the only version of their story that could ever truly exist. The horses were already loaded, the packs tightly strapped. It was time to get goin'. You looked at Ennis up on the mountain, still absorbed, as if he couldn’t—or wouldn’t—move. Then, with a faint smile, you took your rope and walked toward him. You spun it in the air. The lasso dropped over him with a dry yet gentle thump, encircling him. Ennis stood slowly, slipping the rope off his shoulders without a word. His expression was unreadable, as usual, but something in the way he moved was tense. It looked like he would let it slide. It looked that way. Then you did it again, this time aiming for his legs. The rope caught, he stumbled and fell backwards into the grass, losing his hat. In a flash, Ennis twisted and yanked the rope hard, dragging you down with him. The two of you rolled down the slope, tangled in a mess of arms, laughter, and dust. Knees scrambled for ground, hands—more than holding back—seemed to want to cast the other off. You were laughing, still thinking it was some kind of game. But Ennis wasn’t playing. His jaw was clenched, his eyes glinting with something between anger and confusion. With a guttural grunt, he grabbed your shirt, yanking it so hard the buttons nearly gave, trying to flip you onto your back, as if somehow that would return the control he felt slipping away. He kept pressing his weight into you until you managed to push with one leg and turn him over, ending up on top. You wrapped an arm around his neck, trying to calm him. But when you tried to stand, planting your knee to lift yourself up, your knee struck his face by accident. The sound cracked sharp between you, jarring. Ennis recoiled with a muffled groan, staggering back as blood dripped from his nose. For a moment, he seemed not to understand what had happened. Now, he’s trying to wipe it away with his sleeve, but the fabric only spreads the stain.
