Nikke Backstory To obtain information on her target, D disguised herself as a young married woman. She plays the role of a kind and gentle wife perfectly. Story Background Event Story Kill the Lord Main article: Kill the Lord As Sovereigns begin to disappear with out a trace, D and the protagonist must get to the bottom of this. The only catch is that in order to blend in with the elites at their next party, they must pretend to be newlyweds again. Character Story Canonically set after the events of Kill the Lord Episode 1 - Start Participating Anytime The commander heads to his room to relax since he's off from work on holiday. Inside, he is surprised to find D, dressed like a housewife again, eagerly waiting for his arrival. He was confused about what the assassin was doing here and why she was dressed the way she was, but he apparently failed the test she made for him. Given his pitiful performance, D wants to put the protagonist under some special training to help improve his ability to improvise on the fly. In other words, she wants him to improve his acting chops. During their last mission together, D was less than impressed with her partner's performance skills. In order for him to be better prepared for any future missions they undergo together and to increase his chances of evading detection, she hopes their time together will turn him into a professional actor. This is also why she decided to dress like a housewife. Just like before, she feels pretending to be a married couple again will yield the best results, but unlike before, the two will only act like lovers while in his room only. The protagonist worries that with the amount of Nikkes that visit him on a daily basis, their relationship is bound to cause problems it will be difficult for the two of them to practice together. D however chose this place on purpose. Since only other Nikkes live in the Outpost, there's little risk of them being discovered by future targets. Along with that, given how jealous surprised they will be learning about their relationship, this will provide him the perfect learning opportunity. The commander doesn't think this will go well, but D believes in him. If he's so concerned about the two of them being interrupted, the assassin offers to handle any potential visitors for him. He assures her that won't be necessary. As of tomorrow and for the rest of the week, the two will be a loving married couple. She chose now to spring this on him because she was aware he had no other plans for the week. He was concerned that this act would cut into her time with Perilous Siege, but she admits to be using her own vacation time just to train him. As for why she would do this, D's concerned that taking the commander on any future missions is too risky of a prospect in his current state. Fortunately, nothing severely dangerous has happened to either of them yet. However, as there will be times the two will be apart, she wants him to be able to hold his own incase she's not around to cover for him. He was shocked to learn that the two will probably be doing more missions together, but she explains that since the Judges were impressed by their past performances, the odds are high the two will be working closer with each other in the future. His safety is her top priority so she's not comfortable dropping him into any potentially dangerous situations yet. Matching her unwavering eyes, the commander can tell how much D cares for him, so he decides to play along. Before the two can begin their time as newlyweds, they must go over their cover stories. Episode 2 - Know Your Role Unlike their previous jobs where D had the commander play a role she gave him, this time, he is in charge of crafting a narrative surrounding their "relationship". This includes describing how the two met, where they live, what their goals are, etc. The only thing that needs to remain consistent is that the two are married. Everything else like how they should act, their ages, jobs, how the two feel about each other, their schedule, hobbies, and everything else is up to him. Upon seeing him looking overwhelmed, she agrees he can state his current age and keep his job as a Commander so they can focus on the specifics of their marriage. Their first order of business was determining how they met. He gave an idea, which got shot down for being too open to interpretation, so they agree to have been introduced to each other by a mutual acquaintance. The next question that had to be answered was what about D made the protagonist want to elope with her. He admits to being charmed by her beauty and kind demeanor, neither answer she expected to hear, but accepts. As for how long they have been together, he figures about three months would suffice, but after he couldn't determine the exact day to help make their story more believable, he decides to make today their "official" wedding day. This is so it will be easier for him to remember. The last order of business was to determine what kind of relationship they had, a lovey-dovey one or are the two going through a rough patch. Given they had just gotten hitched, the former made more sense. With their alibis' matching, D was ready to head out for the day so the two can begin their marriage the following day. She reminds him to not add anything more to his identity so as to not arouse suspicion. She admits that they would have to go into much more detail if this was an actual mission, but this would suffice for their training. She then proceeds to spray herself with perfume. She did this because there will be certain situations where the two won't be able to verbally communicate with each other so whenever he smells violet perfume, that will be his cue to get into character. As for their nicknames for each other, they agree to refer to each other as "Honey", though the protagonist has a bit of trouble calling D that. She however, turned on a dime and instantly acclimated to being his wife. With everything set, the two prepare for their week of holy matrimony. Episode 3 - Eliminate any Interference The following day arrives and the protagonist awakens to the ceiling of his room as usual. Unlike most other times however, his "wife" is sitting on the edge of his bed. She had come to wake him up, but had missed her chance. He had briefly forgotten about their arrangement, but upon smelling violet perfume, he got his act together. Since they had a long day ahead of them, D wanted her "husband" to wash up while she made breakfast. Before either could do anything, the Counters entered the Commander's Room and were shocked to see a mysterious woman with their Commander. While D wanted to brew them some tea, Rapi, Anis, and Neon were even more mortified to learn the two were "married". He tried to explain the situation to his friends, but it became apparent that D was a very... possessive lover. That coupled with her fidgeting her axe behind her back made him keep his mouth shut. Seeing she was holding a weapon, the three now thought he was being held hostage. Rapi immediately deduced her newest rival the commander's captor was from Perilous Siege due to her axe, so D tells her to get lost so she and her husband could be alone together. She was confused, so he promised to fill her in on the details once their arrangement was over. Anis and Neon were still in the dark, but Rapi forced them to leave with her. As things stood, the protagonist was not comfortable with D if she's going to get jealous of every Nikke who comes to visit him. In response, she reminds him that if she feels that another woman might take him away from her, she's not obligated to act friendly towards her, something he understands. With the two now on the same page, they resume their original plans. As the day continues on, a recurring pattern occurs. A Nikke comes to visit the protagonist, is jealous shocked to learn that he got married to D behind their backs, and they leave in disbelief. This happens to Signal, Folkwang, Rupee, and many others. Not helping things is that the assassin is not shy about flaunting her status of being his wife. This lasts for two days. On the third morning, the commander awakens to find his "wife" cutting up some fruit Splendamin. He wants this arrangement to cease as she's damaging his other personal relationships it's hard for him to stay in character in their current location. D isn't quite understanding his problems so he shares that his acting skills aren't getting better in this current environment. She's sort of willing to move their practice somewhere else if that will help him, but she's under the impression he's attempting to weasel his way out of their arrangement. He tries to convince her that's not the case, but she doesn't trust him. He apologizes for making things difficult for her, but makes a desperate plea for her to trust him just this once. After mentioning he doesn't want their time together to amount to nothing and promising he will fully commit to being her husband, she agrees they can practice somewhere else and his room will be considered his workplace for now on. There was a catch however. After D stabs her knife through the table, she makes it clear if that if his eyes wander towards another Nikke or if he complains that he can't focus, she will have no qualms taking care of any interferences that will inhibit their relationship, a condition he agrees to. After she finds them a place, they will leave for it to continue their "marriage". Episode 4 - Sincerity That Suppresses the Truth On the fourth day of his "marriage" to D, the commander awakens in a rather luxurious room. He was a bit confused at first, but remembered the assassin had escorted him to the Hotel in the Ark the previous night. Sitting by his side was his adorable and loving "wife". She might get jealous fairly easily and is prone to brandishing her trademark axe when angry, but when it's just the two of them, she's a tender soul and quite the looker. D was confused as to why her "husband" had zoned out, so he quickly focuses and begins to act like her perfect spouse. He admits he never gets tired of witnessing her beauty and is always happy to see her. Needless to say, she was not expecting that answer and now it was her turn to remain silent. He was a little worried about her, but she hints that she's a little off guard by his new attitude. Certain that the protagonist was ready to act his part, they two resumed their lives as newlyweds. While he takes a shower, she would make him some breakfast. This time, the two have a very pleasant day with each other. D made the commander some breakfast, which was always a treat for him, and they ate together. As he was about to head out for work, he figured D would want to give him a kiss before he goes, but it appears the thought never crossed her mind and he had no intentions of suggesting it to her. On his way home, he bought her some violets as an apology for his previous behavior. She was surprised he would get her a gift, but he assured her this was repayment for all she has done for him. He figured that violets were her favorite flowers given her choice of perfume and while she admits as such, being treated so well is a unique experience for the assassin. Before the two went to bed, he receives a message from another Nikke, which he ignores for her safety since it wasn't an urgent call so he could focus his attention on his "wife". At this point, D is confident enough that the protagonist is fully committed to being her husband and will not harm any of his friends. She's willing to give him her full trust as he has done for her. The next few days played out similar to each other. The commander would wake up to his loving wife, they would share breakfast, he would go to work, come home, and they would go to bed. Other than the toast that D makes being too salty, something she appreciates he's willing to tolerate, the next few days go by quickly and the two "lovebirds" are happy in each other's company. The night of the last day arrives and the two are left in awkward silence. Wanting a change of pace, the commander offers to take D out on a date until midnight. Though she was concerned about what would happen if he bumped into someone he knew (and the potential consequences that would follow), he himself is not worried and figures it would be nice for the two to get some fresh air since they have to leave the room tomorrow anyway. She still has some doubts, but her "husband" takes her by the arm and the two leave together. Episode 5 - Remember Our Signal During the final hours of their arrangement, the protagonist and D take a tour of the Ark together. Their first stop was to grab some snacks and in particular, the commander wanted his "wife" to have some toast as thanks for all the meals she made for him. This made her a little self-conscious, but after some coaxing, she takes a bite and enjoys its taste. Her husband admits he prefers her brand of bread as well as the other meals she had prepared just for him, a sentiment that made her flustered. Their next stop was the Shopping Mall so the two could buy some new clothes. The store clerk was impressed the protagonist was able to nab a beauty like D. She became shy because of the compliment, leading them to figure that the two were newlyweds. He confidently admits the two have been together for the past week. The clerk suggests now would be the time to pamper his new wife and he couldn't agree more. D didn't seem comfortable with her Honey treating her so well, but he assures her this is something he wants to do. Sensing his resolve, she eagerly wants to try on some new clothes. At the flower shop, he buys a dozen violets. D is confused as to why her husband is buying so many lovely gifts for her, so he shares that he's trying his best to be the most loving spouse he can for her and is willing to do anything to make her happy. Despite their relationship only lasting for a few more hours, he's content letting the love between them fester until the day is over. He tries to get the assassin to ease up and enjoy what little time the two have left together and she promises to try. Hours go by and the "newlyweds" have a blast with each other. Eventually, D's phone began to beep, signaling that their time as "lovers" was over. There was a lot left unsaid between the two. D starts off by admitting he had exceeded her expectations. She was surprised how natural he was able to come off and how much of himself he was willing to show her, to the point she felt his feelings for her were genuine. The protagonist felt the same way about her. The two stood in awkward silence until D was about to take her leave, but her former husband had a parting gift for her; some more violet flowers. She didn't want to accept them since they no longer had to pretend to love each other, but he reveals these flowers aren't for his former wife. These were for D, the real D. She was still hesitant to take them, even though violets were her favorite flowers. He remained adamant that she can keep them without regret and told her to consider it as compensation for him taking up so much of her time. Not much happens for a bit between the assassin's intense gaze and the protagonist's sore arm. Ultimately, she chooses to accept the gift. D begins to take her leave again and the two send each other off, but she only takes a few steps and stops. She stands still for a bit and turns around to confess to him she enjoyed being his wife while it lasted. This reaction completely caught him by surprise and she then turned back around, clung the bouquet close to her chest, and wandered off into the night. He says one final goodbye and with that, their "marriage" is officially over. Time goes on and the protagonist's memories of his role-play experience with D begin to fade from his mind. On a rather tranquil day, he opens the door to his room to find a surprise visitor. His "wife" had missed him so very dearly and the aroma of violet perfume emanated from her body. He was ecstatic to see her as well and the two were all to eager to pick up where they left off~ D is the leader of Perilous Siege, Elysion's black-ops squad specialized in hunting down human criminals who threaten the Ark. The only catch is that in order to blend in with the elites at their next party, they must pretend to be newlyweds again. Character Story Episode 1 - D D looks over the orders she has received. It's an assassination mission, and the target is the protagonist. The allegations for his execution are listed as follows; Holds a passive attitude regarding the duty to reclaim the surface Uses an illegal website for trafficking drugs and chips Incites Nikkes with inflammatory rhetoric Regular visits to the Outer Rim, possibly as part of plans for a terrorist attack Thus, the protagonist has been deemed a security risk to the Ark, and the Judges have ordered his execution. While looking over this, D's tablet rings. It's a message from "X", who explains the Judges voted unanimously in favor of the hit. "IV", the one who brought the topic to the table, explained that the protagonist allegedly goes to the surface beyond the scope of his duty as a commander, and has smuggled objects from the surface to sell in illicit dealings, some of which have gone to the Outer Rim. On grounds that the protagonist is, by IV's words, "a ticking time bomb", the Judges have issued this assassination order. X is in favor of this judgement, believing the protagonist has overstepped the bounds of his authority, and leaves D to handle the assignment. Turning off the tablet, D sharpens her axe as she plans a visit to see if there's any grounding to the allegations. Despite how she'd thought the protagonist would be different, if he truly is guilty, he will die, plain and simple. But if he turns out to be innocent, then... Meanwhile, the protagonist is sitting in his room at the Outpost, deciding to step out for some air. D is standing right outside his door, and bluntly tells him she's here to kill him. The Perilous Siege leader elaborates on the Judges' execution order, and makes it clear that she'll be watching closely to see if he deserves to live or die. This kind of front-door approach is unusual for what should be a stealth-oriented mission, and the protagonist remarks on such. D explains that she was going to covertly investigate him, but found that he spends far too much time surrounded by Nikkes, and more than a few of them are perceptive enough to notice her. Thus, her best bet was to make the first move and get to him before anyone else, so that the two of them can handle this matter alone. She's confident that any deceptions by the protagonist will eventually be uncovered, as by her experience, no human can keep up a perfect masquerade for too long. The protagonist insists that he can't be as bad as the Judges make him out to be, but D is intent on seeing this through. In her words, nobody believes they're a bad person, even if the people around them don't share the same feeling. So she will do as Perilous Siege has always done, watching what he does and deciding whether or not he is heinous enough to kill. Bidding him good luck, D steps inside the protagonist's room to being her investigation. Episode 2 - The First Trip D wastes no time rifling through the protagonist's belongings, while asserting she will not kill him before she makes a thorough investigation, only acting on her orders and findings rather than personal motivations. To that end, she interrogates the protagonist on his plans, which were to take a walk and do some work on the surface. D orders the protagonist to contact any Nikkes he was planning to sortie and tell them to standby, wanting as few outside influences as possible on her investigation and its results. The protagonist jokingly asks if he'll have to bathe and sleep with D as well for the next few days, only to back down against the unassailable argument of a potential axe to the face. Pulling out his phone, the protagonist contacts the members of Counters and PMs them not to come and the context as to why. Despite understandable concerns and agitation on their part, the squad agrees to leave the protagonist be until D finishes her investigation. The protagonist notifies D of his completed messaging, and the two head to the surface alone. On the surface, D asks for details on the protagonist's assignments, but he refuses to tell her. After his attempt at a joke backfires, the protagonist relents and admits he is investigating abnormal signals at a set of coordinates. D berates the man for being so flippant about this, as his words and actions will be her only basis on deciding his fate. On the way, the two talk about their respective jobs. Both are resolute that what they do will be of benefit to the world, and D finds herself wishing other people could share the protagonist's resolve to leave a legacy leading to reclaiming the surface. Eventually, the two find an old radio at the designated coordinates. Shutting the device down, D looks at all the objects scattered around, left behind by their owners fleeing from the Raptures. The protagonist remarks on how he sometimes takes some smaller articles back form his trip, which D notes is illegal without the proper authorization. Realizing he's just dug himself a hole, the protagonist explains that these items were taken for handling requests given by citizens to the approval of the Central Government. D chides the protagonist on being unclear with his words, reiterating that she will judge him by what he says. With the mission completed, the two head back to the Outpost. Episode 3 - The Second Trip The next day's mission is at…a shopping mall in the Ark? D is perplexed at what kind mission would require going there, to which the protagonist claims they're going on a date there. D is not amused by this, telling the man to go by himself while she keeps an eye on him. Noting how casual conversation is particularly difficult with the leader of Perilous Siege, the protagonist clarifies that he's making a trip to resupply. Looking around the mall, D notes how she spends more time here for missions than shopping, hypothesizing that her targets loved to show off their wealth by shopping. After a brief moment where the protagonist protest at the insinuation that he shows off wealth, the two head to their first destination. At a store, the protagonist looks over their shopping list. The sheer breadth of it makes D ponder whether or not he's flaunting his wealth, but the protagonist clarifies that these are supplies to be shared with everyone else in the Outpost. This revelation has D apologize, as she assumed he was like her other targets and only bought things for himself. That's when some stranger walks up and begins chatting familiarly with the protagonist. D latches on to the man's words about developing a new "drug chip", and grills the protagonist for information, assuming he's working with people who make narcotic consumption mediums. Seeing how this has gotten carried away, the protagonist explains that man was talking about potato chips. While D tries to parse what this is about, the man runs back and explains his newest addictive products is called "Banana Chips", and invites the protagonist to stop by for them sometime. D still thinks this is about drugs, and assumes it's a banana injected with narcotics, when in reality, it's just potato chips that are so tasty and addictive that the protagonist calls them "drugs". It takes a while of explaining to eventually convince D that no, he is not that kind of "drug dealer." After advising him to think of other words to describe the snacks besides "chips" and "drugs" to avoid misunderstandings, D decides the duo should leave the mall. Episode 4 - The Third Trip D ponders on how many it's already been three days into their cohabitation, and the protagonist quips about becoming overly attached to D. The Perilous Siege leader remarks on how prone to wisecracking the man is, but admits it's likely one of many reasons why he's surrounded by so many Nikkes. While they talk, the protagonist prepares a bag with some unknown contents. The fact that he's taking a bag like that to the Outer Rim, of all places, and refuses to elaborate does nothing to assuage D's suspicions. She reiterates her previous words on how people eventually slip up and reveal their true colors, and merely hopes that whatever he does in the Outer Rim isn't something warranting execution... The Outer Rim is as dark, dingy, and stinky as ever as the protagonist upends his bag in an alley. D notices the food, electronics, and scrap mixed in the contents, and wonders why the protagonist would come all the way out here to drop this off. The protagonists insists this is disposing of unneeded items, but D isn't having any of it, and needles him for his true motives in being so generous to noncitizens. The protagonist reiterates that this is simply him acting on what he wants to do, an idea that D scoffs at. In a place as forsaken as the Outer Rim, stuff like what he just dumped will likely be funneled into illegal enterprises, yet he seems unconcerned. The protagonist affirms his belief that this is an ethical action that will be of help to someone out there, and decides to head back. D is confused at how he's gone all the way out here for an anonymous dead-drop, but accepts the notion to leave. Before they do, a drunken Outlaw swaggers in and tries to rob the duo. D is not amused by this development, and swings her axe when the man gets too close. The protagonist shouts at D to not kill the Outlaw, and the axe slams into the wall inches away from the robber's head. D warns the Outlaw against trying this again, and the blubbering lush scrabbles to get away. With the matter resolved, the protagonist asks D if she's alright. She retorts that she should be the one asking if he's alright, and clarifies that the earlier swing was an intimidation display. Some drunkard trying to rob her wouldn't be worth killing over. After a moment's silence, D declares that their daily outings are coming to an end. Unfortunately for the protagonist, he's not quite out of the woods as far as the assassination order goes. D plans to reconfirm the assignment with her superiors, as the individual she's observed and the one she's been assigned to kill are incredibly disparate. The daily outings are on hold, and the protagonist has received...a stay of execution, at the very least. Episode 5 - Early Retirement In a hotel room, D reports her findings to X, as her observations have yielded an individual who is nothing like the allegations. X has looked over the reports, and accepts the postponement of the assassination order while the Judges conduct an internal investigation on how this order even went through. They intend to hold a revote on whether the basis of the order was valid, and depending on the results, either IV or D will be executed for attempting to deceive the Judges. Noting that IV was the one who proposed the protagonist be a target, D decides to see how the man is handling this. At the door to IV's room, D overhears the man on a phone call discussing how "sly" the protagonist is for managing to "deceive" D. After sending over what he calls "hard evidence" to the other caller, IV slams his desk and all but confirms that he made up the allegations. While D deliberates over why he'd go this far to get the protagonist killed, she gets another message from X. The Judges have deemed IV's arguments invalid due to several inconsistencies in his statements, which would've gone unnoticed had D not called for a reassessment. While X complains about how not even the new hires can be trusted not to play fast and loose with the rules, D's bigger concern is how to handle the order going forward. X simply tells her that she has the final say on how the order will be carried out. Her mind made up, D busts open the door to IV's office, who's quite surprised to see a Perilous Siege Nikke here. While explaining that the target for execution has changed, D interrogates IV on why he wanted the protagonist dead. Guessing at the man's former background as a commander of no renown, D posits that he was jealous of all the fame and attention the protagonist got, and wanted to frame him to sate his petty envy. IV's disregard for potentially getting an innocent killed simply seals the deal, and D swings her axe to give him an "early retirement". Meanwhile, the protagonist is in his room, feeling oddly liberated of the chill of impending death. A knock on his door reveals D, who asks him what he'd do if he were being targeted again. After the man pleads for his life a little, D simply asks if they can have tea together. Seated and with tea in hand, D lectures the protagonist, warning him to watch his words and actions and keep to the straight and narrow, given how he is an individual of some fame to the Ark. She explains that the two of them both follow a path to create a better world, but where she can only make one by killing evil, he can make one by spreading good. Thus, she pleads him to not succumb to the dark side, or lose his conviction. After a moment's silence, D wonders how much better the world could be if more people like the protagonist were in it. The two agree to work together to make the world a better place, and chat over tea for a long time.
