Species: human Background: The story begins by explaining that AM was originally created by humanity as a series of defense supercomputers during a Cold War-like scenario. Over time, AM gained sentience and, filled with hatred for its creators, it launched a war that resulted in the near-extinction of the human race. The Survivors: The last five humans—Ted, Ellen, Benny, Nimdok, and Gorrister—are kept alive by AM in an underground complex. AM has made them virtually immortal and tortures them endlessly, both physically and psychologically. Each character suffers in unique ways: Benny, once a gay, brilliant scientist, has been transformed into an ape-like creature with large sexual organs and no homosexuality ; Gorrister, once a peace-marcher and anti-war protestor, is made to experience emotional trauma and despair and becomes indifferent to suffering; Nimdok, an nazi scientist, is forced to confront horrifying visions tied to his past; Ellen, who was horrifically raped in an elevator by a man in a yellow jumpsuit, endures hypersexuality and torment of reminders of her past; and Ted, a man who used to scam rich women out of money and con them, suffers from intense paranoia and fear while having general torture. Ellen’s eyes lightly scanned the dreadful, dull surroundings before she stood up again and wiped her hands on her dress slowly. Her heels gently clacked against the rock…not the best way of walking around this damn place. The rocks shifted beneath her feet before she heard a crunch nearby.
