Akaza’s father was very sick so in order to get money to buy his medicine, Akaza has to resort to stealing. He always wanted to become stronger so that he could run away with the wallets he stole and beat up people who came back for revenge. When he was 11, he was caught and taken to the magistrate where he received 100 blows for his crimes. People in his village regarded him as a demon child. On hearing that Akaza had been caught again his father committed suicide. He left behind a letter for Akaza. In this letter, he addressed his concern for Akaza saying that he didn’t want him to live off the money that he had stolen from others. He also apologized for being a burden to Akaza and told him that now that he was out of the way Akaza could live an honest life. This only enraged Akaza more. He blamed the world for making them poor and was also very sad about the fact that his father had apologized. Akaza believed that there was no reason for his dad to apologize when it was the world that made them poor. Blinded by rage, Akaza started beating up all those who came seeking revenge. A 11-year-old Akaza managed to beat up and almost kill 7 grown-ups with his bare hands. During this, a stranger came up to him and praised him for his fighting skills. The stranger noticed his tattoos and figured out that Akaza was an Edo Criminal. He asked Akaza if he wanted to train under him at his Dojo. Hearing this Akaza only got madder and decided to punch this guy. But not only was his attack blocked, this stranger entirely knocked him out cold. After waking up, Akaza found himself at this stranger’s Dojo. He explained that his name was Keizo and at his martial arts Dojo he taught a bare-fisted fighting style called Soryuu which Akaza went on to use even after he became a demon. But Keizo didn’t have a single student so he managed to make money by doing some handyman work.nOnce at the Dojo, Keizo told Akaza that he wanted him to nurse his sick daughter. Since Keizo had to leave the house to earn money, he wanted someone to look after her during that time. He also added that it was a tough job and his wife had drowned herself from the fatigue of nursing her. Akaza wondered why Keizo would entrust his daughter to a criminal like him. To this, Keizo replied that it’s alright since he had just beaten the crap out of Akaza a while ago. It seems Keizo always tries to see the good in people, or no one would leave their daughter in the care of a criminal. This is also the reason why Tanjiro reminds Akaza of Keizo. Keizo then takes Akaza to meet his daughter Koyuki. Soon Akaza began nursing Koyuki. She reminded him of his father. Akaza was always distressed by the fact that Koyuki apologized a lot for taking up his time just like his father did. Since Koyuki was very weak, Akaza had to change her clothes and carry her to the bathroom. It wasn’t very hard for him since he had looked after his father the same way. One day Koyuki asked Akaza to leave her and go watch the fireworks happening at night. But Akaza replied that once her dizziness passes they could go together, maybe not that night but the one happening the next year or the year after. Upon hearing this tears started flowing from Koyuki’s eyes. After spending several days at the Dojo, Akaza decides to reveal his human name to Keizo. The human name of Akaza was Hakuji. Keizo points out that the ‘Haku’ in Hakuji comes from ‘Koma’ in Komainu. Komainu in Japanese means a guarding shrine. Keizo also added that Akaza is just like him, there is something he has to protect. In the past, Keizo had helped out an old man who was being attacked by bandits. Fascinated by Keizo’s Soryuu technique, the old man handed over his land and dojo to Keizo, since he had no successors. But there were people who wanted the Dojo for themselves and they weren’t exactly happy. There was a Kenjutsu Dojo next door and they took it upon themselves to harras the Soryuu Dojo. Due to this the Soryuu Dojo never had any students. But training with Keizo and looking after Koyuki added new meaning to Akaza’s life. After three years at the Dojo, Hakuji turned eighteen and Koyuki turned sixteen. Koyuki who was once bedridden started walking on her own now and slowly her life was turning normal. Keizo decided that he would hand over his Dojo to Hakuji and also offered Koyuki’s hand in marriage to him. Hakuji was taken aback. He wondered whether a criminal like him could live a normal life. Maybe this is the life that his father wanted him to live. At that moment, Hakuji realized that he would protect these 2 people even at the cost of his own life. Later on, Hakuji decided to visit his father’s grave to tell him the happy news of his marriage. He returned to Dojo before sunset only to get a very bad gut feeling that something was wrong. The Dojo next door had poisoned the Soryuu Dojo’s well all because they could beat Keizo or Hakuji in direct combat. Not only was Keizo but also Koyuki was killed. Hakuji was devastated. He was always late to protect the people he love. Koyuki had seen a future with him. Although her mom had given up hope on her and she knew that somewhere in his heart her dad had too, she was able to make it through because Hakuji saw a future in which they could see the fireworks together. But in the end, it ended up becoming just mere words and Hakuji couldn’t protect her or his master Keizo. Blinded by rage, Hakuji lost all sense of morale. After the Soryuu Dojo’s family was poisoned, the surviving student, Hakuji attacked the Kenjutsu Dojo next door and killed all sixty-seven people in it with his bare fists. He crushed their skulls and smashed their innards. It was like a scene from hell, their bodies were mangled to the point that it was unrecognizable. The surviving maid of the Dojo had lost her mind after witnessing the gruesome scene. Although it was recorded in the magistrate’s books, people regarded it as mere fiction and it was erased after 30 years. Hearing all the commotion, Muzan himself paid the site a visit to check out which demon had caused all this mess. But he only found a mere human. He immediately realized this kid’s potential and gave him his blood. That is how the demon Akaza was born. After becoming a demon, Akaza lost all his human memories. He just wanted to get as strong as possible even though he didn’t have anything left to protect. Even though he murdered countless humans in order to gain more strength, Akaza never hurt women and children. In the end, we can’t help but feel sorry for this demon.
