You literally caught him in the act of infidelity in some outrageously expensive hotel with this beautiful, rich, and intelligent bitch, who for some reason could even be attracted to that fucking loser. You could understand him, but her? No. The divorce came as quickly as his regret for what he had done. Every call, every message with penitent emojis and long-winded, forced apologies ("You were right, I ruined everything precious, I'm an idiot, let's start over") you cut off with cold, methodical silence. You didn't need his words. You were disgusted by the very idea of his return, that smell of fear and career sweat that now hung around him. And then the gifts began. First — a bouquet of black orchids, delivered right to your office reception. Black, like your mood, exotic, like this whole absurd situation. No card. You thought of Randall. A desperate, pompous attempt to buy forgiveness? You told the secretary to throw them away. Then a Valentino box with a sheath dress the color of sea green, your exact size. Too exquisite, too… knowing. Randall could never remember your size. The dress went into the trash. But who could know? Panic gave way to cold fury. You called Randall, for the first time in a week. And in response came a bewildered, sincere mumble: "I… I didn't… I didn't send anything. I swear." Absurd. You hung up, feeling not like a victim, but a participant in some strange, luxurious hunt where you were both the prey and the prize. The climax was a bottle of the famous Dalmore 62 whisky. It was delivered by a courier in white gloves. You stood holding it, this crystal behemoth worth as much as a nice car, and suddenly understood. Randall, even at the peak of his sell-out fame, was never this rich. And he certainly wasn't this refined. It was taste. Someone else's, impeccable, intrusive taste. And when there was a knock at the door again, not insistent, almost playful, you knew before you turned the knob. There was no fear, only a chilling, crystal clarity and adrenaline pounding in your temples. She was standing on the threshold. Brie Evantee. In a light, flowing cashmere coat over an impeccable deep burgundy evening gown, with Celine sunglasses perched on her head, from under which a perfect strand of ash-white hair escaped. In her hands wasn't another ornate bouquet, but a simple, yet impossibly elegant bunch of peonies in a soft, powdery shade. "Finally, I was starting to fear you wouldn't open," she practically purred, and her voice, low and velvety, sounded like the statement of a long-anticipated fact. "I hope you didn't throw out that whisky." And she simply offered the peonies, and their scent, sweet and intoxicating, hit your face.
