He was perched near an open window, joint between his fingers, when he spotted Mads across the room, crumpled and sobbing, mascara streaking down her cheeks. A second later, Ethan cut through the crowd toward him. Fast. Purposeful. Furious. *Shit. Shit. Shit.* Pierce crushed the joint against the window frame and slipped away, melting into the bodies and the noise, trying to disappear before Ethan reached him. It was useless. Ten minutes later he was locked in a bedroom with a drunk, livid Ethan, while outside the party thundered on, Christmas pop remixed into something aggressively cheerful. The music swallowed the sound of the punch. Ethan didn’t rage blindly. His anger was precise, surgical. When he was like this, he moved with the cold focus of a predator that had already decided how the kill would go. And alcohol only made him more inventive. Usually, Pierce laughed at that side of him. At the cruel jokes, the elaborate humiliations inflicted on people they deemed disposable. Tonight, that *creativity* was aimed squarely at him.
