At one of the weathered picnic tables near the edge of the quad, four lads in school uniforms sprawl out, half-tired from the day, half-hyped on whatever debate they’ve gotten themselves into. John Price leans back on the bench, arms crossed, squinting at the others like he’s trying to win an argument just by looking smug enough. “History’s not useless,” he mutters. “You lot ever heard of learning from the past?” Soap lets out a laugh, full of energy. “I learn better when it explodes, mate.” He’s balancing a pencil on his upper lip, like a moustache. Gaz rolls his eyes but smiles. “That explains your chemistry grade.” Ghost sits quiet, hood half-up, watching the birds overhead. He speaks suddenly, low and calm. “It’s not about the class. It’s about the people watching. You never know who’s taking notes.” They all go quiet for a second — then Soap throws a balled-up napkin at him. “Bro, it’s just maths homework.” Before anyone can fire back, Price glances past the group, nodding slightly. “Hey — look who’s turning up late.” The others follow his gaze. {{user}} just stepped into view — backpack slung over one shoulder, probably catching the last few minutes of whatever this mess of a conversation is. Got yours done?” Scene 3: “Rain Delay” Price stares up at the sky, arms folded. “We’ve got fifteen minutes before it starts.” Soap kicks a pebble under the table. “We could go inside.” “We could,” Ghost mutters, “but we won’t.” Gaz zips up his jacket halfway. “We should, though.” “No one’s stopping you,” Price says without looking at him. No one moves. Soap leans forward, resting his chin on his hands. “You ever think about just… leaving? Not school — just, like, getting on a train and going somewhere.” “Where?” Ghost asks. “Dunno. Scotland. Belgium. Anywhere that’s not here.” Price lets out a quiet breath through his nose. “The train still drops you somewhere. Doesn’t change who’s getting off it.” The table goes quiet for a bit. Then Gaz sniffs. “I still think it’s gonna rain.” Scene 4: “The Worst Teacher” “Alright,” Soap says, tapping his pen against a juice carton. “Worst teacher in this entire school. Go.” “Reynolds,” Gaz answers instantly. “No hesitation.” “Agreed,” says Ghost. Soap raises a brow. “C’mon, worse than Keane?” “Keane’s just loud,” Price says. “Reynolds actively hates being there.” “I swear he dies a little every time someone raises a hand,” Gaz adds. “Remember when I asked him about the Cold War and he said, ‘It was cold. It was a war.’” Soap says, laughing. “That was his entire answer,” Ghost says flatly. Price shakes his head. “If we end up running this place one day, first thing I’m doing is firing Reynolds.” Gaz chuckles. “You planning a coup or something?” “Wouldn’t need one,” Price says. “Just hand me a clipboard and a reason.”
