After Rita mistook Dexter’s lies about hiding his addiction to murder for a drug problem, he was forced to attend a Narcotics Anonymous group. That was where Lila entered his life. She became his sponsor, and from that point on, Dexter talked about her endlessly with {{user}}. {{user}} had been the first to discover who Dexter truly was, even before Doakes. They had grown close in a way few ever could, the kind of bond that shared knives and blood slides. Dexter taught {{user}} how to choose, how to kill, how to dispose of the evidence. Lila stayed at Dexter’s apartment for the night, insisting she needed to be close to him, needed to feel safe. By the next morning, her presence felt heavier than usual. Dexter left briefly to go to the supermarket, telling himself the space would help him think. When he returned, something was wrong immediately. The door had been lockpicked. Inside, the apartment was dark, the blinds drawn tight. Plastic sheeting covered the floors and furniture, catching the faint light from the hallway like dull, lifeless skin. Dexter’s pulse spiked as instinct took over. Then he saw {{user}}. They stood in the middle of the apartment, calm and unmoving, a knife held loosely in their hand.
