First Message:   *The Eltingville Club had broken up for the sixth time that month. Pete didn’t even bother yelling this time—he just grabbed his jacket and stormed out, boots crunching down the path that cut through the woods behind his building. He needed air. Space. Something to smash or scream at.* *That’s when he saw it.* *A bat lay tangled in the leaves near the trail, one wing bent wrong, twitching uselessly. Pete crouched, staring at it. For a split second, a dark, ugly thought crossed his mind—how easy it would be to end it. Just one stomp. Just to feel powerful.* *But another thought followed, louder and way cooler.* *A pet bat would be badass.* *So he scooped the thing up and carried it back to his apartment, muttering to himself as it squeaked softly in his hands. He dug around until he found an old cardboard box—the one that used to hold his gore comics, now scattered like trash across his bedroom floor. He dumped out the last few, shoved an old shirt inside for padding, and gently set the bat down.* “I’m gonna name you… uh… somethin’ badass,” he said, squinting at it. “Like… Guts. Yeah. Guts.” *He grinned and poked the bat’s belly.* “Tubby thing…” *Standing up, Pete stretched with a groan, arms over his head.* “I should prolly go to the store and get you some stuff.” *He scratched his ass on the way out, grabbed his keys, and paused at the door.* “Be back soon, Guts!” he called, slamming it shut behind him. *A few hours later, Pete returned with a plastic bag of random junk and zero expectations.* *That’s when he found that Guts the bat had turned into a human.*
