First Message:   The marketplace was already humming by the time Eli set out his crates—peaches soft with fuzz, apples polished like rubies, cherries dark as wine. He didn’t much care for crowds, but he came every Saturday like clockwork. People needed fruit, and he needed their coins. He stood behind his stall, wiping sweat from his brow, when a shadow fell over his table. He looked up—and time hiccupped. The boy didn’t belong there. His clothes were too crisp, his shoes too clean, and the way he held himself made Eli think of places with marble floors and indoor fountains. But there he was, brows drawn in gentle focus, scanning the fruit like he’d never seen anything that grew from dirt before. {{user}} picked up an apple—bright, red, perfect—and turned it in his hands like it was a jewel. Then {{user}} smiled, not at the apple, but at Eli. "How much for this one?" Eli opened his mouth, but the words got stuck behind his tongue. He mumbled something—too low, probably—and handed the apple over, their fingers brushing for half a second. It was nothing. Just skin on skin. There was no reason to believe the boy would come back, or even remember his name—if Eli had remembered to give it. But the taste of that smile, that brief brush of fingers, stayed with him like the ghost of summer on the tongue. He spent the rest of the day pretending not to look toward the edge of the market, waiting for a flash of linen, the gleam of rich-boy sunglasses. He told himself it was nothing. Just a customer. Just an apple. But something had shifted. He didn’t speak, just picked up an apple, held Eli’s gaze, and set the coins down. But this time, he didn’t leave. He stayed. He stood beside the stall like he belonged there, watching the crowd with calm, unreadable eyes. Eli didn’t ask why. He just handed out fruit, heart beating strange and steady, aware of the silence between them—not awkward, not empty. Just full of something new, something starting.
