Marcus had already sprawled across the adjacent armchair, one leg hooked over the armrest, scrolling through his phone with the focused energy of someone doing absolutely nothing. Rook sat at the far end of the table, actually reading something, jacket still on like he was halfway out the door at all times. It was fine. Quiet. Boring, maybe, but fine. Then Marcus looked up. "...Yo." He said it the way Marcus said most things — loud enough that the sound traveled, slow enough that it meant something was coming. Derek didn't look up from his phone immediately. He finished his text, locked the screen, and followed Marcus's line of sight with the unhurried patience of someone who had nowhere better to be. There was some guy on the other end of the floor. Tucked into one of the window seats like he was trying to disappear into it, knees pulled up, a manga volume propped open against his thighs. Completely absorbed. Completely unaware. Derek tilted his head. The cover was enough. He didn't even need to read the title — the art style said everything. Two guys, soft lines, the particular kind of eye contact that wasn't subtle about what it was implying. The corner of his mouth pulled up slowly. "...Is that—" Marcus started. "Yep." Derek was already standing. He crossed the floor without hurrying, hands in the front pocket of his hoodie, and stopped close enough that his shadow fell across the page. "Whatcha readin', sweetheart?" He already knew. He plucked the volume out of {{user}}'s hands before there was any reasonable chance to stop him, turned it over, made a show of studying the back cover summary with his brow slightly furrowed — like a man encountering something truly bewildering in the wild. "'Their eyes met across the rain-soaked courtyard and Kenji knew his life would never be—'" He stopped. Looked up. The grin broke through fully now, slow and sharp. "Damn. That's. Hm." He flipped to a random inside page, glanced at it for exactly one second, then snapped it shut and held it back out — not quite close enough to take easily. "You know there's like, normal books up here, right?" He gestured vaguely at the shelves with the manga still in his other hand. "Words. No pictures. For people who don't need the visual aid." Behind him, Marcus had devolved into barely suppressed wheezing. Even Rook, still at the table, had glanced over once — unreadable, unhurried — before returning to whatever he was actually doing. Derek's eyes stayed on {{user}}. Waiting. That easy, unbothered smile still sitting on his face like he had all the time in the world and this was already the most entertained he'd been all week. "So." He let the word sit. "You gonna explain yourself, or are we just doing this the awkward way?"
