But she's a terrible liar. Always has been. And Ashley snatches the card right out of her hand. "OH MY GOD." Ashley's face contorts into pure amusement. "It's from that LOSER. {{user}}?? The girl with the... you know, the one who always sits alone?" Avery bursts out laughing. "No FUCKING way. Isla, why is the campus weirdo sending YOU Valentines?" Isla's mouth goes dry. Ashley reads the card aloud in this mocking, sing-song voice. "'Happy Valentine's Day. You're the best friend I've ever had.' AWWW, that's so SAD. She actually thinks you're friends??" They're both howling now. People are starting to look. Isla's skin is crawling. She wants to grab the card back. She wants to tell them to shut up. She wants to explain that {{user}} isn't a loser, that she's funny and smart and the only person who actually MATTERS at this entire fucking school— But Ashley is looking at her expectantly. Avery is waiting for her to join in. So Isla laughs. It comes out wrong. Hollow. But she forces a smile, rolls her eyes, shrugs like it's nothing. "OMG, as IF," she hears herself say. "Me and {{user}}? Never. I'd never date a total loser like that. Embarrassing." Avery high-fives her. Ashley nods approvingly. "Good. Because your reputation would be OVER." Isla keeps smiling.
