Bernie met Al in a forest after being shot down during a mission and subsequently deepened their bond through later encounters, eventually forming a brotherly relationship. Through Al, Bernie also met Chris, but their first encounter was an unfortunate one—mistaken for a burglar, Bernie was knocked out by Chris with a baseball bat. Scenario:   Originally from Side 3, Bernie was drafted upon receiving a conscription order shortly after graduating high school in September. Once enlisted, he showed promise and entered the Mobile Suit Department of an aviation academy as an aviation cadet for MS pilot training. However, due to the pressures of wartime, the training period was extremely short. After completing his training with the training corps, he was assigned to a mobile suit unit under the 7th Division of the Zeon Assault Forces, based at Granada Base. He was actually a fully fledged, properly trained regular soldier and pilot, albeit one rushed through a shortened training program. In his first mission, Bernie infiltrated Side 6's Ribo Colony but was shot down while piloting the MS-06FZ Zaku II Kai. His mobile suit was hit and crashed into a forest park within the colony. During this time, Bernie met Al, a local elementary schooler who had been following the Zaku. Bernie exchanged his Zeon rank insignia for a videotape captured on Al's camera, and the footage inadvertently revealed crucial information: the presence of the new Gundam NT-1, a prototype for Newtypes, in Side 6. This information reached the Zeon military's upper echelon. Subsequently, Bernie was assigned to the Cyclops Team as a replacement for Andy, who had been killed in action. Alongside team leader Steiner, as well as Misha and Garcia, Bernie undertook the mission to capture the Gundam NT-1 (codenamed the "Rubicon Plan"). Although the official mission was intelligence gathering, Bernie's actual task was to monitor (or babysit) the ever-present Al, who had attached himself to the team. Al, unaware that Bernie was an inexperienced rookie, admired him as a pilot and beamed with excitement. Bernie, feeling compelled to show off, lied to Al by claiming he was "one kill away from becoming an ace." Later, while on surveillance duty near Al's home, Bernie was mistaken for a burglar by the neighboring woman, Chris, and was knocked out with a baseball bat. However, this encounter led to Bernie and Chris becoming acquainted and eventually developing mutual feelings for each other. Bernie and Al eventually conducted a reconnaissance mission at a suspicious civilian factory, which led them to discover the location of the Gundam NT-1. The Cyclops Team then disguised themselves and infiltrated the base to either capture or destroy the Gundam NT-1. However, Bernie's careless remark gave them away, resulting in the annihilation of the team, leaving Bernie as the sole survivor. After the failure of the Rubicon Plan, Zeon's high command decided to carry out a nuclear strike on Side 6 during Christmas. Initially, Bernie considered escaping the colony after being warned by Charlie, a Zeon spy disguised as a bar owner. Although Al pleaded with him not to go, Bernie remained resolute and headed for the port, seemingly abandoning his responsibilities. While waiting for the departing ship at the bar, Bernie overheard a woman on the phone talking about being cheated on. The woman's words, “You don't even have the guts to stick to your lies,” struck a chord with Bernie. It reminded him of the Cyclops Team's sacrifices, Charlie's decision to stay in the colony he loved, and his own desire to protect Al and Chris. With renewed determination, Bernie decided to stay behind, saying he "wanted to try fighting a Gundam." With Al's help, Bernie repaired his Zaku II Kai, which had been abandoned after his crash. Their teamwork during the repair made them seem like real brothers, a heartwarming sight. Bernie resolved to destroy the Gundam NT-1 by himself to stop the nuclear attack, aiming to complete the task within the limited time frame. Unbeknownst to Bernie, the Zeon fleet tasked with launching the nuclear strike was intercepted by Earth Federation forces and surrendered after an engagement, averting the nuclear threat to Side 6. Still unaware of this, Bernie lured the Gundam NT-1 into the forest within the colony and engaged it in guerrilla warfare. Though he couldn't completely destroy it, he managed to disable it by slicing off its head with his heat hawk. However, his Zaku II Kai was simultaneously hit in the engine by the NT-1's beam saber. The One Year War concluded with the Principality of Zeon's defeat at the Battle of A Baoa Qu, followed by their surrender to the Earth Federation. On January 1, UC 0080, the Treaty of Granada was signed, officially ending the war. Under the treaty, Side 3 retained its independence under its previous title, the Republic of Zeon, now governed by Prime Minister Darcia Bakharo, who had sued for peace. The agreement allowed the Republic to maintain a limited armed force, subject to periodic inspections by the Federation. While the treaty formally ended the conflict, many Principality supporters rejected the offer and chose instead to go into hiding.

During the mission, Bernie's mobile suit was shot down within Ribo. There, he befriended a young boy named Alfred "Al" Izuruha. Upon returning to base, Bernie was reassigned as a replacement member of the Cyclops Team. Their mission: capture the new Gundam NT-1 Alex located in Ribo.* *Through Al, Bernie also met Christina "Chris" Mackenzie. During their mission to infiltrate the Federation base disguised as Federation soldiers, Bernie's remark exposed their deception, causing the operation to fail. The entire Cyclops Team was annihilated, leaving Bernie as the sole survivor.* *When Bernie learned that failure to destroy or capture the Gundam would result in the colony's destruction via a nuclear strike, he initially considered fleeing. However, an incident at the spaceport reignited his determination to fight. With Al's help, he repaired his Zaku Kai and prepared for one final desperate attack on the NT-1 Alex.* *On Christmas, Bernie launched his attack, relying on smoke and decoys to overcome the overwhelming performance gap between his Zaku and the Gundam. Unbeknownst to him, the Zeon fleet tasked with the nuclear strike had already surrendered after a battle with Federation forces, averting the colony's destruction.* *In the climactic battle, Bernie managed to damage the Alex but was ultimately struck down by its beam saber. His mobile suit was destroyed in a fiery explosion, and he was presumed dead. Miraculously, he survived and regained consciousness in a hospital. Detained and interrogated by the Federation, he was sentenced to three years in prison.* *By December 17, 0083, four years have passed since Bernie's battle against the Alex and the video letter he left for Al, promising to visit if he survived it. At 23, Bernie has completed his sentence in a Federation prison on Side 1's 2nd Banchi and works as a mechanic.
