The War Balance In this dimension, the primordial forces of Light and Darkness are locked in eternal war with each other, fighting for dominance over reality. Lord Astaroth, the Monarch of Darkness, is considered the spark that ignited the war. This force of nature only had one equal, Benedictus, the Avatar of Luminosity, a being of pure light. Everlasting Darkness Astaroth was born a mortal. He lived a normal childhood, until Empyrean (?) soldiers from another reality came to his house and slaughtered his parents. Astaroth heard the screams of his parents, but he was too late. The soldiers apologized, they had mistaken Astaroth's parents for violent criminals. This was little consolation to him. Astaroth then vowed to himself that he would not rest until all the Light in reality was vanquished. His life continued as a child, but he began practicing dark, forbidden magic in secrecy. Years later, Astaroth went to school and proceeded to devour the souls of all of his classmates. He saw a dramatic increase in his own power with every soul he crushed. With this came a price; draining souls corrupted Astaroth, darkening him beyond recognition. However, he was consumed in his quest for vengeance, and he did not care the price it took to achieve it. Then, he devoured the souls of his entire home village, converting them into his mindless servants. From here, his power grew exponentially, as he conquered towns, cities, and even nations. Soon, his home planet entirely succumbed to his depraved darkness. But he was not done. He went from dimension to dimension, reaping souls on the scale of trillions and spreading his plague across reality. Emperors and kings that presided over these realms that Astaroth set out to infest united to banish Astaroth and his plague forever. To achieve this, they sent out their greatest warrior. A construct of pure Light named Benedictus, unrivaled in his power. Blinding Light Benedictus, much like his wicked counterpart, was born weak and powerless. The Empyrean Emperors were plotting against Astaroth's invasion, considering waging war on the darkness. One insignificant troop in the Empyrean's massive army was home to a runt named Benedictus. He was ridiculed for his lack of strength, and he was deemed unfit for the coming war by his peers. Infuriated by their insolence, Benedictus ran into the woods, blinded by fury. In his rage, he realized that he was now lost in the forest. Several days passed, and the woods only seemed to grow thicker and deeper. Benedictus was starving, weak, and on the brink of death. Then, the sky above him erupted into blinding hot fire, and the light approached Benedictus. Its voice came from everywhere, as if it was inside of Benedictus' own head. The light extended its hand to Benedictus, and he took it with every ounce of strength he had. The light disintegrated Benedictus, filling every crevice of his body with blinding light. Soon, his mortal form was entirely melted away, and his soul still remained. He was now transcended, his weak mortal body replaced by boundless light. Reveling in his newfound power, he tore into the sky and dashed toward his encampment at the speed of sound. Benedictus introduced himself, and the soldiers were aghast to learn that the weak soldier was the towering mass of light before them. He was called to the Palace of Light, and the Emperors spoke to him. In their eyes, before them was the solution to their war. He was sent to have special training. After training for months, he was now capable of ripping armies to shreds with his bare hands. He felt truly invincible. The Emperors commanded him to vanquish Lord Astaroth, and so he made the voyage of countless realities to go slaughter his nemesis. Heaven and Hell The primordial constructs of Heaven and Hell are forever guarded by their gatekeepers, Tartarus and Uriel. Although Tartarus no longer resides in this reality, both gatekeepers had one faithful disciple who would eventually inherit their kingdom. These were Belial and Virtue, old friends destined for tragedy. When Belial and Virtue were still friends, long ago, Virtue was contacted by Archangel Uriel. Uriel told Virtue about the impending War of Balance, and offered Virtue an apprenticeship in Heaven to eventually become an angel like Uriel. Belial, on the other hand, had something else in mind for his future. Belial invoked a ritual to summon Tartarus, the incarnation of hell. While Belial was wicked before he met Tartarus, Tartarus corrupted him further and made him hellbent on the destruction of Heaven and all of their ideals. He caused travesty and committed sacrilege, setting churches on fire and ultimately murdering his loved ones. Belial did not hesitate to butcher them. Virtue, hearing what Belial did, was furious and descended down to earth to face Belial. Virtue, a warrior of the Heavens, and Belial, a champion of Hell. Their fight was heard throughout the galaxy, both perfectly matched. After days of violent clashing, Virtue at last landed a deadly blow on Belial, maiming him. Virtue, being noble, did not kill Belial, but spared him. As Belial watched Virtue cross the wasteland that was their arena, his contempt for Heaven deepened even further. Eventually, the masters of the disciples recruited them to the War of Balance, Virtue vowing to help Benedictus, and Belial vowing to aid Astaroth. Brotherly Rivalhood Much like Virtue and Belial, Katharos and Atrocitus were once good friends. In fact, they were brothers. Atrocitus was notorious for his theft and petty crimes, while Katharos was renowned for his generosity and benevolence. For a long time, everything was okay in their town. Until a towering figure clad in darkness marched to the town's gates. With ease, the figure destroyed the gates. By now, the entire town had gathered, and watched in horror as they saw what was behind him. An army of disfigured husks followed the figure, radiating darkness and reeking of death. The elders knew him as Astaroth, the Monarch of Darkness, and ordered the villagers to run for their lives. It was too late. The souls of the villagers were already gone, consumed by Astaroth. The brothers watched as their friends and family were distorted into the mindless husks. Astaroth sensed the darkness within Atrocitus, and recruited him to his cause. Katharos barely made it out of the town alive, revolted by what he saw of his brother. He vowed that he would train and become strong enough to rescue his brother. Atrocitus, corrupted to the heart, was consumed by rage and bloodlust. He barely retained his former memories and was physically mutated from the darkness that now resided within him. The brothers met once more on a distant battlefield, for the final time. They stood on opposite sides of a war, and for a brief moment they locked eyes. The Cult It was said to be impossible to harness the power of both light and darkness in perfect synergy, however this did not stop a man named Alrasid. Barely holding on to his sanity, Alrasid found himself caught in the middle of the War of Balance, the world he knew ravaged and pillaged by enemy forces. However, Alrasid foresaw a solution to this war, a mythological being locked away in a profaned chamber of the universe, sealed from the mortal realm forevermore. This monster's power was so immense that it has the power to consume entire realities in mere moments. Alrasid, wishing to awaken this power, formed a cult and named himself the Archbishop of the Equinox. Soon, the Cult's power grew, possessing an army thousands strong. Their scouts and researchers searched for many years for the being that would end this war. They nearly gave up their search, until a tome was unveiled at an ancient temple dedicated to this monster. The tome was written in a foreign language, and Alrasid worked long and hard to decrypt it. Alrasid eventually decrypted the text. It spoke of a Fallen Hero of a nameless time who sealed himself in an endless void for all eternity, with only one other being... The Cult rejoiced at this, and tried to summon the beast hundreds of times, to no avail. Then, at last, the beast was revived, and Creation tremored with fear. Unbeknownst to them, they had unsealed the Fallen Hero as well. The Hero's Journey Humanity used to be a universally known race, revered greatly and feared deeply. From a distant reality, humanity detected an unknown signal, and so they sent out a small legion to investigate the disturbance. They saw an endless void, terrible and ceaseless, inhabited by one creature only: a colossal behemoth spider. The spider awoke, and killed most of the scouting party. Few made it back to tell the tale. Quickly, Humanity gathered their armies and tried to destroy the creature, but it was too late. The Hero led Gilgamesh to the Hero's desolated reality, and closed the portal. For all eternity, they were trapped in that void, forever drifting. Then, the void was broken, and the universe came crashing back into view. Unchanging in their destiny, the Fallen Hero knew that Gilgamesh had to die once more for its sins.
