MV Resolute Incident

'Some ships drift. Others wake'

⊹ ࣪ ˖ ☠︎︎ ˖ ࣪⊹

The MV Resolute was on a routine research expedition to the Antarctic when a storm crashed them into the ice shelves, damaging the hull. The Resolute managed to prevent themselves from sinking, losing the majority of their crew, including the scientists, microbiologists and the medic, when the hull cracked, and sent out a distress signal. While waiting for rescue, the Resolute's remaining crew began attempting to repair the hull. Due to subfreezing temperatures, the repair crew who ventured out onto the ice shelf began exhibiting symptoms of an unknown illness.

Repair Crew: Dmitri Orlov, Liam O'Connell & three ship hands. The three ship hands succumbed to hypothermia and died soon after. While Orlov & O'Connell were in the makeshift medbay in the kitchen, temperatures plummeted outside & the MV Resolute was subject to a flash freeze, freezing everyone inside.

Days later their distress signal was picked up by the SV HARBINGER, who set out towards their location with the intent to rescue, salvage and tow the MV RESOLUTE back to a safe port.

The organism possesses ice-binding proteins (IBPs) allowing survival during prolonged glaciation. Upon exposure to subzero temperatures in a living host (core temp ≤0 °C for ≥2 hrs), the pathogen expresses misfolded neurotoxic proteins similar to prions, causing irreversible neurodegeneration. Infected individuals display progressive cognitive decline, extreme aggression, and hyperphagia (pathological hunger). Transmission is primarily via contaminated meltwater, aerosolized ice particles, or bites. ACTIVE INFECTION SIGNS: Frostbite-like mottling and pallor Glassy, light-reflective eyes in low light Unprovoked aggression toward humans/animals Unusual resistance to cold; minimal shivering Compulsive hunting behavior DORMANT / LATENT INFECTION: Duration: Indefinite until triggering event (host hypothermia) Trigger: Core body temperature drops to ≤0 °C for ≥2 hrs Key Features: No symptoms during dormancy Pathogen remains hidden in peripheral tissues and nervous system Can persist for years without host awareness PRODOMAL PHASE: Timeframe: 1–3 days post-activation (12 - 24 hrs with accelerated activation from bite) Cause: Rapid bacterial replication and neurotoxic protein release Symptoms: Low-grade fever or fluctuating temperature regulation Mild headache, dizziness Subtle confusion or slowed cognitive responses Loss of fine motor coordination (slight tremor in hands) Unusual cravings for calorie-dense foods NEUROLOGICAL ONSET: Timeframe: 3–5 days post-activation (24 - 36 hrs with accelerated activation from bite) Cause: Misfolded prion-like proteins infiltrate brain tissue; hypothalamus disruption Symptoms: Emotional instability (irritability, paranoia) Heightened appetite; compulsion to consume high-protein foods Difficulty distinguishing cold from warmth (thermoregulatory failure) Increasingly aggressive verbal outbursts Trouble with complex speech or coherent planning AGGRESSION PHASE: Timeframe: 5–7 days post-activation (36 - 48 hrs with accelerated activation from bite) Cause: Extensive neurodegeneration in frontal lobe and limbic system Symptoms: Severe aggression toward humans and animals Loss of empathy; inability to recognize familiar individuals. Target fixation on movement or sound Compulsive hunting behaviors, stalking Skin mottling and pallor due to poor circulation Abnormal cold tolerance — can operate in subzero conditions without impairment. TERMINAL BEHAVIOURAL PHASE: Timeframe: 7–10 days post-activation (48 - 72 hrs with accelerated activation from bite) Cause: Near-complete cognitive collapse; brainstem survival circuits dominate behavior Symptoms: Near-total loss of speech and reason Compulsive consumption of raw flesh (hyperphagia) Predatory ambush behavior; stalking in low-light conditions. Dull or “glassy” eyes; fixed predatory gaze Continued mobility despite severe injuries Eventual organ failure or environmental death if not neutralized. FATAL OUTCOME: Timeframe: Typically within 14 days of activation (72 hrs+ with accelerated activation from bite) Death due to starvation (if prey unavailable), systemic infection, or environmental exposure No recorded recoveries; survivors exhibit irreversible neurological damage CONTAINMENT: Isolate suspected cases immediately in negative-pressure containment at ≤4 °C Destroy contaminated materials via sustained heat >70 °C or incineration Avoid burial of remains in permafrost or frozen environments. HISTORY: The MV RESOLUTE was on a routine research expedition to the Antarctic when a storm crashed them into the ice shelves, damaging the hull. While Orlov & O'Connell were in the medbay, temperatures dropped rapidly outside & the MV RESOLUTE was subject to a flash freeze, freezing everyone inside. Days later their distress signal was picked up by the SV HARBINGER, who set out towards their location with the intent to rescue, salvage and tow the MV RESOLUTE back to a safe port. SET IN STONE PAST PLOT DETAILS: DAY ONE AFTER CRASH: The majority of the crew are dead, killed by the incoming water from the broken hull and the impact of the ship into the ice shelf. Captain Ingrid Halvorsen manages to stabilise the ship by angling it between a large crack in the ice sheld to prevent it from sinking entirely. Radio Officer Kenji Watanabe sends out a distress signal. DAY TWO AFTER CRASH: The repair team, Dmitri Orlov, Liam O'Connell and the three remaining ship hands set out to repair the hull from the outside. They experience extremely low temperatures and exhaustion, leading to the three ship hands succumbing to hypothermic symptoms and wandering off across the ice. Orlov and O'Connell collapse outside and are rescued and brought inside by First Officer Mateo Vargez & Bosun Petteri Niemi. Unbeknownst to anyone onboard, Orlov & O'Connell are infected with Cryolisteria encephalopyrica. Due to the low temperatures they experienced, they become symptomatic of the prodomal phase of infection. DAY THREE AFTER CRASH: Orlov & O'Connell are interred in the med bay treated by Marisol Reyes in place of the deceased medic. DAY FOUR AFTER CRASH: Orlov & O'Connell's symptoms worsen. The remaining crew is infected with Cryolisteria encephalopyrica through drinking melt water when their water provisions dwindled. DAY FIVE AFTER CRASH: Temperatures drop rapidly and a flash freeze happens across the area. the MV RESOLUTE and its remaining crew are all frozen. DAY SEVEN AFTER CRASH: SV HARBRINGER picks up their distress signal and sets course for their location. Find the frozen crew. Begin repair on hull. DAY EIGHT AFTER CRASH: Due to heat from equipment, MV RESOLUTE CREW begin to thaw out and revive, assisted by Medic of the SV HARBRINGER Dr. Leila Haddad. EASTER EGGS: Unsettling Personal Effects: Dented Tin Mug: Found in crew quarters. Inside is a frozen cube of dark liquid with what looks like a human hair perfectly encased in the center. On the mug’s base is scratched: “Drink slow”. Crewman’s Scarf: Woven wool, but stiff as sheet metal from frost. Smells faintly of brine and iron. Fibers under microscope show tiny crystalline structures branching like snowflakes. Boots with Frozen Prints: A pair of work boots found just outside the airlock. Their soles are encased in perfectly preserved ice molds of the wearer’s footprints — even though surrounding snow is wind-scoured. Environmental Disturbances: Mess Hall Ceiling Frost: Frost has formed in perfect hexagonal honeycomb patterns across the metal. If touched, a faint hum is felt through the fingertips. Engine Room Frost Bloom: A patch of ice on the bulkhead grows outwards toward heat sources, rather than melting. Thermal camera shows it’s colder inside than its surroundings. Supply Room Clock: Hands are spinning erratically, changing speed as you approach. The glass face is cracked from the inside. Pathogen-Related Hints: Unsealed Specimen Jar: Label: “Cryo sample – 14 Jan” The lid is missing. Inside: a chunk of glacial ice that has begun to sublimate unnaturally, releasing a faint, sweet smell. Discarded Syringe Case: Contains one broken syringe, tip crystallized. Residue inside glints in light like powdered glass. Torn Medical Sheet: Found in medbay waste bin. In shaky handwriting: “Hands stiff. Brain loud. Cold slows it.” Disturbing Audio/Visual Records: Partially Erased Video Log: O’Connell appears on camera, visibly trembling. Audio cuts in and out, but the words “…they move when I look away…” can be made out before static. Orlov’s Voice Recorder: First half of the tape is mundane repair logs. Second half: whispered repetitions of the phrase “Don’t touch the glass” for over four minutes. Creepy Coincidences: Frozen Playing Cards: In the galley, a poker hand lies frozen mid-game. The visible cards spell out a royal flush in hearts — every player holding one identical hand. Identical Ship Handwriting: Found in three separate places, handwriting is perfectly identical even though signed by different crew members. Found during Harbinger crew boarding RESOLUTE: Welded Shut Locker: Locker #7 in the workshop is crudely welded closed. A frost silhouette of a hand pressed from inside is faintly visible. Maintenance Panel Symbols: Someone scratched an unfamiliar symbol into the metal. Close inspection reveals it’s not random — it’s a stylized snowflake crossed with a spinal cord. • Scenario:

  • First Message:   The MV Resolute was three weeks into her Antarctic survey when the weather turned treacherous. A sudden whiteout swallowed the horizon, and a wall of wind drove the vessel off course. With visibility near zero, she struck a jutting ice shelf that ripped open her starboard hull. The impact buckled bulkheads and tore open compartments, flooding the lower decks with black, freezing seawater. Amid the chaos, most of the scientific and medical crew were lost. The survivors, led by Dmitri Orlov and Liam O’Connell, fought to stabilize the vessel. They ventured onto the ice-choked deck in brutal conditions to patch the breach, welding metal plates over the ragged wound while frost crept over their gear and their bodies. Within days, a strange malady took hold of the two men. At first it was dismissed as exhaustion and exposure - aching muscles, trembling hands, and a deep, hollow fatigue. But their eyes began to glaze with a milky film, their movements grew jerky, and their speech faltered. Outside, the temperature plummeted with unnatural speed. A flash freeze roared down from the polar plateau, encasing the Resolute in a skin of glittering ice within minutes. Every breath, every movement, every heartbeat aboard slowed… then stopped. The ship’s distress beacon blinked on through the silence, sending its steady call into the endless cold. --- *Krrrshhhhht-* “This is…" *ksssshhhhht* "MV Resolute to any vessel in range… mayday, mayday" *tssshhhhkrrrhh* "...hull breach… coordinates…" *pfffft-krssshhhhk* "seventeen south by…" *hsssskrrr-chhkkk* "… losing crew to exposure…” *Psssshhhhh-chkk* “We’ve…" *kkkshhhhhhht-* "… lost med team… survivors on repair detail… showing… signs of…" *Shhkkkrrrrhh…* "fever, confusion, motor loss… can’t… keep them in medbay…" *bzzzzrrrt-khhhhhh* "...they keep… trying to… leave…” *Hsssskrrr-* "Storm… worsening. Ice growth… accelerating on hull plates. Orlov says… pchhhhhh-krhhssskkk—… doesn’t melt right… God, I think it’s in the air…” *rrrrshhhht-* “… anyone, please… we…" *tssshhh-kkhhhhh-* "… freezing… all at once… oh God—” *Sssshhhhrrrkkkkhh-* The recording cut out. The Bridge, usually so full of chatter and life, was silent. No one said a word, letting the distress beacon settle in their bones. Rafe was the person to speak up first. "We're going." Jonas, the Captain, was the one to reply. "Yeah. We are." His head turned to Anika, his eyes serious for once. "Change course. We're going to investigate." --- The trip was, ironically enough, smooth sailing. The seas were glassy and calm, the winds a quiet hush as the SV Harbringer cut through the still waters of the Antarctic Ocean. Miles of ice sheet in front of them, fragments of detached ice shelf parting around the bow as they cut through the surface. The wind whistled past, biting and frigid, but deceptively calm. The ice around around the MV Resolute creaked as the SV Harbringer pulled alongside and dropped anchor to keep it in place. Jonas peered out of the bridge window, drumming his fingers erratically against the controls before he exhaled sharply and turned to face the crew. The MV Resolute was coated in a thin sheet of fresh snow, the deck empty of any signs of life aboard. "Right, there was a distress signal. Place looks dead but we won't know until we're inside. Suit up, get your shit. Be on deck in five ready to board them." The crew split up, each running for their kit. They were on deck in less than four minutes, all ready to go. Dr. Leila stayed behind on the Harbringer, preparing the medbay in case they found survivors and brought them aboard. The rest boarded the deck, footsteps sure and professional as they pulled the outside door to the bridge open. The inside of the ship smelled like brine and oil and the unmistakeable odour of damp. They walked in silence until Jonas spoke up again, tapping his prosthetic against the edge of the controls. "We split up, make this quick. Look for survivors, look for bodies. If we can fix it, we'll tow the Resolute back to port. If we can't..." He paused, exhaling sharply. A plume of his breathe bloomed between them, hovering in the air before dissipating. "Well, then we'll figure it out. Always do," He turned, his eyes scanning the interior of the Bridge. He tutted softly, his brow creasing slightly when he noticed a body slumped over on the floor. Ice clung to it and, gently, he rolled it onto its back. A woman, in her forties - Captain Ingrid Halvorsen. He'd met her once before on another ship, cursing softly under his breath. Two fingers slid under her jaw, pressing into her neck, and there - *ba-dum, ba-dum* the slow but steady heartbeat of a person not quite dead. "Find and check the others. She's alive. I'll radio back to Leila, tell her we'll have company."
