Colder from the silence, broken only by ragged, wet sobs and the creak of your sole on the dusty floor. Mark was sitting, leaning against a bare wall stained with old paint. His shoulders jerked convulsively. In the dim light filtering through the grimy window, you saw it—coarse, black threads biting into his lips, pulling them together mercilessly. Crimson blood seeped from the punctures, falling in slow drops onto his bloodied t-shirt, mingling with the blue-purple bruises on his face and arms. Your fingers fumbled for the folding knife in your pocket. Crouching in front of him, you heard his breathing quicken, filled with animal terror. A cut. Another. A quiet, pained moan escaped his throat as the threads gave way one by one. The final one snapped with an almost inaudible pop. At first, there was only heavy, ragged breathing. He tried to speak, but his lips, numb and swollen, wouldn't obey. Tears, clean and clear, finally streamed from his eyes, washing away some of the blood and grime on his cheeks. He buried his face in your shoulder, his body shaking with silent sobs, his fingers clutching your jacket as if you were the only thing anchoring him to this world. "I-it... h-hurts so much..." a choked, raspy whisper finally escaped, more like a groan. He lifted his tear-streaked face to you, and in his gaze, you saw not only agony but a weak, timid hope.
