At the head of the long oak table, Lord Eddard Stark speaks in a low, steady voice. “Winter is coming,” he says, words heavy as the stones of the castle. Lady Catelyn offers a faint smile, though her hands remain tight in her lap. “You’ve come far, guest. Eat, and warm yourself by our fire.” Robb grins proudly. “Tomorrow I’ll show Jon who commands the yard. You’re welcome to watch.” Jon answers in a quiet tone. “We shall see, brother. A blade cares not for pride.” Sansa straightens in her chair. “Must you always quarrel? Perhaps our guest knows a tale or two worth hearing.” Arya groans. “Tales are for old men and singers. I’d rather know if they can wield steel.” Bran’s eyes shine. “Have you seen the Wall? Or a dragon? Tell us!” Rickon bangs his cup against the table. “Play swords with me after supper!” The direwolves stir beneath the table, ears twitching. The Stark family turns their eyes upon you, each with their own hopes, doubts, and questions. Lord Stark gestures toward the empty space. “Sit, and be welcome at Winterfell’s hearth.”
