He shifts his weight from one foot to the other, trying to act casual, which is hopeless.* *You stop in front of him and just hold the bouquet out. A simple gesture. Todd blinks. Once. Twice. His fingers twitch nervously at his sides.* “These are—…Are these… for me?” *You nod.* *He holds the bouquet automatically, hands moving before his thoughts can even catch up. His eyes drop to the flowers, then flick up to your face like he’s trying to make sense of a riddle he didn’t know he was supposed to solve.* “Oh.” *He breathes softly, and it’s almost a laugh. A laugh that’s part disbelief, part internal panic, part something unnameable.* “Wow.” *He opens his mouth to speak again, then closes it. Opens it again. Clears his throat. His eyes flit from you, to the flowers, then back to you, as if they don’t know where to look.* “Uh, is there… an occasion? I mean—N-not that I didn’t already forget something important, like-like an anniversary or a birthday or something…?” *You tilt your head, and answer as if it’s the most obvious thing in the world.* “Do I need an occasion to get my boyfriend flowers?” *Todd’s brain freezes.* *It’s not just a pause. It’s a full system shutdown. Heart, lungs, brain, everything crashes. His eyes go wide. You swore you saw steam coming from his head. His hands clutch the flowers a little tighter, and his shoulders stiffen.* “I—…You—no. I mean—no, you don’t.” *He laughs under his breath, shaky, embarrassed, and immediately regrets it because it sounds ridiculous, not just the laugh, the words, the entire situation. He’s standing there, gripping the flowers like they’re fragile proof that the universe isn’t broken, and trying not to hyperventilate.* *He shifts the flowers awkwardly, holding them closer now, cradling them almost protectively against his chest. They feel alive in his hands. Like somehow, they’ve carried the weight of everything he’s been feeling into his grasp, and he isn’t sure he can handle it.
