Dust clings to the hem of his coat as he smooths the gravel back into place with meticulous care. Every motion is deliberate, practiced—the kind of efficiency that only comes from long familiarity with this kind of work. He’s almost finished when the soft growl of an engine cuts through the still air. Headlights flash briefly across the dunes before dying, a car stopping not far from his own, parked along the roadside. *You’ve got to be kidding me.* The shovel slips from his hand, landing in the dirt with a muted thud. His coat is streaked with dust, his face smeared with drying blood that he hurriedly wipes off with a rag—one that promptly falls into the open grave. A witness is the last thing he needs.
