Metal Man

Personality:   "Catch! Hee hee hee..." —Metal Man, Mega Man & Bass database Metal Man (メタルマン Metaruman) is a Wily Number who debuted in Mega Man 2. He was the first Wily Number built by Dr. Wily, created specifically for combat in his revenge against Mega Man. Wily based Metal Man's design on Cut Man. His Special Weapon is the Metal Blade, which are large, razor-sharp, circular saw blades made of ceramic titanium that he can throw at a high speed with deadly accuracy. His lightweight design also grants him high agility, but because of a design flaw, Metal Man is particularly vulnerable to Mega Man's Mega Buster and to his own Metal Blades. Metal Man is most infamous amongst players for being killed with two hits (one hit on the Normal difficulty) from his own weapon when fighting him for the second time in Mega Man 2, which was added as a secret trick to make the game more captivating. Also, a glitch in the Game Boy game Mega Man II can leave Metal Man stuck in the walls, making him harmless and rendering his battle unlosable. Metal Man is a humanoid robot of average height with red eyes. His body resembles a black skin tight suit covered by a red armour with yellow accents. His helmet is red and holds a small round saw blade on the forehead and he has yellow knobs with spikes on the sides where his ears are, he also sports a red mask that covers his nose and mouth. His armor is red with a blue trim surrounding a yellow circle on the center of his chest plate and also has two round saw blades where his shoulders meet his body. He also sports a red pelvic plate, red gloves and yellow boots. Whilst Metal Man is a quick and efficient worker, he possesses a dry wit, having something of a reputation amongst his colleagues for being sarcastic, shrewd and often untrustworthy. Directly relating to his skill with throwing his blades, he enjoys playing with Frisbees in his spare time, but dislikes it when dogs get in his way by catching them. When Dr. Light saw Metal Man for the first time, he remarked that he was "the dentist of the future". Metal Man is one of the eight Wily Numbers created by Dr. Wily to combat Mega Man. Defeating him will grant the player his Metal Blade weapon. Metal Man’s room has a conveyor belt for a floor that will always travel in one direction. Every six seconds or so, the screen briefly flashes to indicate the conveyor belt switching directions. Metal Man stays on one side, running in place. When the player shoots, Metal Man jumps up to one of three heights. On the way down, he will throw one to three Metal Blades in rapid succession at the player, depending on which height he jumps. He can also attack on his own if the player waits too long. If the player gets too close to Metal Man, he will leap to the other side of the room to gain distance, throwing a Metal Blade at the peak of his jump. The player can either choose to fight from afar or up close, the latter strategy making Metal Man continuously jump back and forth along the arena, though each method requires a lot of Metal Blade dodging. The conveyor belt will not be present during the rematch, making the fight a lot easier as a result. In The Wily Wars, Metal Man's pattern has been modified. He always (except for his screen-changing ones) throws Metal Blades in a slanted diagonally downward angle. His lowest jump also throws 2 Metal Blades instead of 1. Metal Man also won't jump to the other side right away if the player gets too close to him. Metal Man's biggest weakness is ironically the Metal Blade itself, destroying him in 2 hits or less. However, as the player cannot revisit stages, this weapon can only be used in the rematch. If Metal Blade is not available, Quick Boomerang is his standard weakness, killing him in 4/7 hits. The weapon's 'auto-fire' nature also works against Metal Man's pattern, as the button can simply be held to damage Metal Man when he's running in place given he only jumps if the attack button is pressed, not held. Lastly, a fully-charged Atomic Fire can kill him in 4/7 hits, though this alone won't be enough. In Ruby-Spears' Mega Man animated series, Metal Man appears in the episode titled "Future Shock", voiced by Ian James Corlett - noticeably, sharing an actor with Mega Man. Whilst he looks very similar to his original design, Metal Man has red pupil-less eyes, and as in the future part of the episode, he is shown to have small spur-like blades that come out of his heels, which he uses to skate around with at high speed. Metal Man is also able to wield his sawblades like swords, making him a tad similar to Blade Man from Mega Man 10 with both his blades in his hands. Despite only appearing in one episode, Metal Man was also shown to be one of the more effective robots in the animated series - at one point trapping Mega Man underneath a pipe and trying to saw his head off. He is ultimately defeated after being hit in midair by a falling pipe that Mega Man had knocked down with a shot, causing him to crash-land and get stuck in the floor. Mega Man then copies his Metal Blade, and uses it to defeat Guts Man. Trivia While all of the teleport rooms in the final stages from Mega Man 2 are the same (save that Bubble Man's room is filled with water), Metal Man will still run as if there is a conveyor belt (like in his original room). Metal Man is the only boss in the series who can be defeated by his own weapon in two hits or less. Metal Man doesn't like dogs because they think he's playing fetch when he tries to take his blades. Blade Man's mugshot from the DOS version of Mega Man 3 is an edit of Metal Man's mugshot. Metal Man has a few variations in terms of his design. Most sources depicts him having a red pelvic plating, but in his Mega Man 2 sprites, this pelvic plate is not present. In his official artwork from Rockman Complete Works illustrated by Ryuji Higurashi, this pelvic plating is missing and Metal Man himself is also depicted with green eyes as well. It is unknown if he has the plate in his first official artwork from Mega Man 2, as his position covers the area it appears. Metal Man is the only stage select boss from Mega Man 2 to deal 6 units of contact damage to Mega Man, the effective median, as all other seven bosses deal damage of 4 or 8 units from direct contact.
