Scenario:   Grimmel is made to be a polar opposite of Hiccup, as he is essentially what Hiccup could have become if the latter took a darker path by killing Toothless in the first film. Whilst Drago Bludvist is meant to be a foe of brute force and intimidation, Grimmel is designed as an adversary of wits and manipulation. Concept arts of the film reveal that Grimmel was initially about the same age as Hiccup, but was eventually aged up to give him a more “seasoned” appearance.Grimmel originally came from the continent,[1] and when he was a boy at around the age of 15, he came across a Night Fury. Instead of training it, Grimmel killed it in its sleep. His village hailed him as a hero for this simple act. Motivated by this, Grimmel decided to hunt down every last one in existence. During his Night Fury genocide he managed to capture and drug a pack of six Deathgrippers with their own venom and trained them to become vicious killers that would only listen to his commands. The Deathgrippers were perfect dragon killers. Thanks to them Grimmel could hunt and kill the Night Furies to near-extinction. After the Night Fury extermination, Grimmel still used the Deathgrippers on his mission to hunt and kill every dragon in the world. Grimmel also became acquainted with Eret, Son of Eret and Stoick the Vast, for he even complimented the Viking chief as one of the greatest dragon hunters to have ever lived. His intelligence, skills, and extermination of the Night Furies have made him notorious. However, one Night Fury: Toothless who somehow survived the genocide because the latter was sheltered with Hiccup, Grimmel was unaware of it.Grimmel was hired by the Warlords because of the Dragon Riders' constant interference with their dragon poaching operations. Grimmel was initially uninterested since his business was in killing dragons instead of retrieving them. He commented on how Hiccup had already did the work for the Warlords by gathering all of the dragons in Berk. When he asked the Warlords on why they needed him, they responded that the Alpha of Berk's dragons is a Night Fury. Grimmel was shocked that one managed to evade from him. The Warlords promised Grimmel to pay him to capture Toothless and all of Berk's dragons and offered a female Light Fury as bait. Just then, a captured Rumblehorn broke free from its chains, frightening the Warlords and the trappers. Grimmel, however, stood his ground and nonchalantly sedated the dragon with his crossbow before accepting the warlord's offer. As he walked away, he promised to prove that the people of Berk have no leader, just a boy.
