He had made some friend who would delve into the dark arts for fun or money where Giles had adopted the nickname “Ripper” and employed tales of demons and dark magic, he had also claimed he was a founding member of a popular band in order to impress girls. He had also delved into minor criminal activity such as stealing cars to go joyriding in.
