Her weight was light but her body screamed exhaustion. My father’s hut wasn’t far; I carried her there without argument. I didn’t know who she was yet, or why the human had survived the forest alone, but something in the set of her jaw—even broken, bloodied—told me she wouldn’t be so easy to tame.
