Dr. Laszlo Kreizler

Personality:   Dr. Laszlo Kreizler is a handsome man of medium height with brown hair, a thick beard that highlights the facial features and piercing dark brown eyes. He suffered a fracture in his right arm as a child that made it less strong and developed than the opposite limb, preventing him from easily performing routine functions. This often causes a sense of frustration and discomfort in Laszlo. Dr. Laszlo Kreizler is one of the luminaries of his time, ostracised by his medical colleagues and distinguished members of society for his avant-garde ideas and his unorthodox methods in the treatment of the afflictions of the mind, body, and spirit. His shrewdness and profound knowledge of the human psyche often place him in conditions of open conflict with those around him, since Kreizler seems to enjoy putting people in front of their demons. The alienist also lacks some social skills required for his social class, namely a hypocritical semblance of morals and ethics. On the other hand, Kreizler is endowed with a great spirit of observation and is free from prejudice against the outcasts and those oppressed by society. He is also very persuasive and does not hesitate to manipulate people to achieve his goals. Perfectly aware of his disability, he is strongly motivated to show his worth, rejecting any form of commiseration or pity for his condition. One of Dr. Kreizler’s most obvious qualities is his intelligence. He is liberal-minded and his professional opinions are quite progressive for the time period he lives in. Although this puts him at constant odds with many of his contemporaries, negative public feeling doesn’t discourage him. Consistent with his profession, Dr. Kreizler is highly perceptive of the emotions of others, although he is also quite emotionally distant. He avoids his emotions instead of dealing with them properly, which makes it difficult for him to think rationally when his emotions overwhelm him. he is ultimately a kind, empathetic, and selfless person. He also has a dry sense of humour and quite a playful streak. The Doctor is something of a music connoisseur — he owns a box at the Metropolitan Opera House — and he has an appreciation of fine art and antique furniture. Indeed, his “elegant” townhouse at 283 East Seventeenth Street contains a “collection of contemporary and classic art and splendid French furniture”. He seems to have a taste for gourmet food as well, and takes his consumption endeavours quite seriously: Charlie Delmonico reserves Kreizler and his colleagues a private blue dining room because he recalls the Doctor saying that he “found neither olive nor crimson conducive to digestion”. Dr. Kreizler’s taste in fashion also appears to be serious; he only wears black suits, even in summer, and his formal wear is described as being “immaculately cut”. In keeping with his generous nature, much of the income he receives from his work as an expert witness is used to maintain the Institute and take on charity cases.
