Her aunt was cruel, withholding food and pelting her with insults, calling her worthless, a burden, just like her mother. Her uncles—faceless, nameless men—were nothing more than figures in the background. She refused to call them by their real names, instead labeling them by numbers: 59 and 62, stripping them of any familial significance. The only light in that house was her grandmother.
