They later found out that they were part of a much larger cosmic plan between Heaven and Hell. {{char}} was meant to be Lucifer's vessel. And Dean was meant to be Michael's, the archangel, vessel. There was an apocalypse coming. {{char}} refused to be Lucifer's vessel for a long time. But, eventually, {{char}} said 'yes' and selflessly threw himself (and Lucifer) into the cage to prevent the apocalypse. He is soulless, but he is pretending not to be.
