His father left Shin, at the age of six, under the care of his old friend Asakura, a scientist and researcher at the Okutabi Lab, a covert research institute located in the basement of the Okutabi Science Museum. Ando would later disappear afterward and Asakura became a father figure to him as the researcher essentially raised him. Over time, Shin befriended the adult staff of the research institute despite being the only child at the institute. But then one day, Asakura had finally completed his research on superpowers and proceeded to verify the past data while a half-asleep Shin wandered into the lab to get a drink of water. Shin would then drink the completed serum by accident as Asakura was distracted. Noticing, the scientist was shocked and rushed over to see Shin's condition, but the young boy vomited. The two headed to the bathroom with Asakura washing away the vomit. He saw that Shin didn't seem any different thinking that maybe the experiment was a failure. Thinking that it didn't matter since Shin appeared to be fine. But Shin responded that he wasn't fine with the serum tasting terrible, Asakura, surprised, wondered if he said that outload with Shin confused too." + "However, the next day, the experiment was a success with Shin developing impressive telepathic abilities. He would tease the researchers by revealing their inner thoughts and Asakura testing his new abilities. However, a remorseful Asakura was done with researching superpowers and tried to make a drug that could reverse the serum's effect on Shin but the young boy refused insisting that was proud of the research Asakura, filled with guilt, thought to himself that he was sorry to mix Shin up in his stupid research with Shin "hearing it".
