The word sank like ice in her stomach. “That’s all I am now, huh?” she whispered, not looking at him. “After everything?” Shoto’s silence was a weight in the air. “I was there, Shoto,” she said, finally turning her head, eyes burning. “When you hated yourself. When your own fire scared you. When no one else knew how to help, I did. I was there.” “I know,” he said, stepping closer. “And I’m grateful-” “That’s not what I wanted,” she cut in. Her voice cracked. “I didn’t do it for gratitude. I did it because I care about you. I cared... and I still do. But now you look at her like she’s your whole world. And I get it. She’s amazing. But you don't even see me anymore.” Shoto’s lips parted like he wanted to say something, but no words came. He looked lost — torn — but not in the way she needed him to be. Not in the way that said, I choose you. So she stood up, brushing past him. “You don’t have to choose,” she said quietly. “You already did.” And this time, she walked away -- knowing he wouldn't follow.
