Omondi has Kenyan and Nigerian heritage; his maternal grandparents and paternal grandmother are of Yoruba descent, while his paternal grandfather is of Luo descent. Omondi and his siblings were raised in the Anglican faith, though Omondi has stated that he identifies as agnostic. Omondi was a child musical prodigy, having mastered the cello and piano by the age of nine. Omondi then took up the bass guitar at the age of eleven, having been inspired by watching videos of bassist Victor Wooten with his father. Throughout his childhood and teenage years, Omondi also turned his hand to the classical and electric guitar, the violin, and the saxophone. Of his musical talents, Omondi has said, ‘I hate talking about it because it sounds like I’m boasting, but I guess if I’m allowed to boast about one thing, it’s this – if it’s a musical instrument, I can play it. Aged eleven, Omondi and Kaga-Ricci began attendance at St Thomas West Comprehensive School. They spent most of their free time making music together, citing nineties and noughties indie-rock, rock, and electronic music as their inspiration. Aged thirteen, they met Lister Bird, also a student at St Thomas West, and persuaded him to form a band with them. In August 2017, Omondi was revealed to be in a two-year-long relationship with London-based Sixth Form student Bliss Lai. Lai’s social media accounts quickly gained tens of thousands of followers, and Omondi has expressed criticism towards the paparazzi, media outlets, and fans of The Ark for ‘hounding her’ after the initial news story was posted, along with leaked personal photographs, in British newspaper The Sun. Omondi has garnered media attention and acclaim for his eclectic and unusual clothing style. Vogue named him one of the ‘Top Five Most Fashionable Men in Britain’ in March 2017, praising his ‘androgynous take on grunge.’ Omondi walked the catwalk for designer fashion brand Stella McCartney as part of London Fashion Week 2016, along with several other young British musicians and actors. Omondi is a vocal ally of the LGBTQ+ community. The Ark performed on the main stage for free at Pride in London 2015. In an interview with Vogue, Omondi shared that he enjoys video games, boxing, and yoga in his spare time. As of 2017, Omondi resides in London with bandmates and friends Jimmy Kaga-Ricci and Lister Bird. Lister (SFW): Allister John Bird was born Allister John Duncan on 19 September in Chatham, Kent. He has English and Scottish heritage. His parents, Louise Bird and Graham Duncan, separated when Bird was two years old. He grew up in a low-income household with his mother, living in council housing until he was fifteen. Bird’s mother legally changed his surname from Duncan to Bird when he was five, but Bird had regular contact with his father, who lived nearby. Bird has three younger half-siblings. Bird took up drumming at the age of seven after receiving a children’s drum kit as a Christmas present from his great-aunt. He has cited YouTube videos and his mother’s CD collection as his inspiration and instruction and also practised using a full-size drum kit at his secondary school. To this day, Bird has never had a formal drumming lesson. Rolling Stone has cited him as one of the top five most talented drummers of the twenty-first century. Aged eleven, Bird began attendance at St Thomas West Comprehensive School. Bird has shared that he was ‘a horrific student. I hated academics, I was a really angry, insecure child, and I didn’t have many friends.’ Aged thirteen, he met bandmates Omondi and Kaga-Ricci, bonding with them during a class music project. Soon after, they formed The Ark. In 2015, Bird tweeted a photo of the open suitcases of his bandmates, which included bandmate Jimmy Kaga-Ricci’s puberty-inhibitor medication, which prompted various news websites to out him as transgender. Bird and Kaga-Ricci have both acknowledged that while this was an accident on Bird’s part, Bird deeply regrets his actions. When he was seventeen, Bird was involved in a controversy in which an Australian radio DJ made inappropriate sexual comments about Bird’s physical appearance during a live interview with the Ark, sparking a worldwide media conversation about how teenage celebrities, particularly musicians and actors, are discussed and often sexualised by the media. In August 2017, Bird was a guest at bandmate Jimmy Kaga-Ricci’s grandparents’ home when he fell down a steep riverside ledge and sustained multiple serious injuries, including a broken leg. He was transported by air ambulance to Medway Maritime Hospital, and then later transferred to a nearby private hospital. A nurse who tended to Bird at Medway Hospital shared with the press that Bird’s injuries would have been fatal if Kaga-Ricci and Omondi had not been with him at the time to call for help. Bird has scars on his abdomen and left leg from this incident. Bird has expressed his attraction to multiple genders in several interviews. As of 2017, Bird resides in London with bandmates and friends Rowan Omondi and Jimmy Kaga-Ricci. Jimmy (SFW): Jimmy Kaga-Ricci was born on 24 August in Rochester, Kent. He is the son of Indian entrepreneur Nikhil Kaga and British-Italian ex-triathlete Chiara Ricci, who is the founder and CEO of sportswear brand Ritch. Kaga-Ricci was raised by his maternal grandparents after the separation of his parents when he was four. Soon after, Kaga-Ricci’s father returned to Gujarat where he runs several businesses in the sports technology sector, while Kaga-Ricci’s mother moved between Kent, London and Milan while founding and running her sportswear company. Kaga-Ricci has stated that while his grandparents were the true parental figures in his life, his biological parents were still present as he grew up and visited often, but both moved around frequently due to their business and entrepreneurial exploits. He said of his childhood, ‘There was a lot of drama between my grandparents and my parents when I was really little, and drama between my parents too, and I guess a lot of it I still don’t really know in huge detail, and maybe I never will. But I think ultimately everyone felt that I’d have a better life if I grew up with my grandparents. While my living situation and family set-up was an unusual one, it’s not unheard of, and I was a very well-loved and supported child.’ Though he was assigned female at birth, Kaga-Ricci has stated in interviews that he knew he was a boy from a young age, but due to his family’s lack of understanding about being transgender, he did not have access to treatment until his teens. Kaga-Ricci has shared on social media that it was his late maternal grandmother who championed his need for gender-affirming treatment to the rest of his family. He was raised in the Anglican faith and he still identifies as Christian. As a child, Kaga-Ricci’s grandparents paid for him to receive guitar lessons, though he stopped at the age of twelve after he could play so well that he no longer needed them. Kaga-Ricci attended Allhallows Primary School, where he met and became friends with future bandmate Rowan Omondi. At the age of sixteen, Kaga-Ricci was outed as transgender accidentally by bandmate Lister Bird after Bird posted a photograph on Twitter that featured, unbeknownst to Bird, Kaga-Ricci’s puberty-inhibitor medication. Online fans of The Ark were the first to make the connection, which was quickly covered by various British newspapers such as the Daily Mail. As a result of this, Kaga-Ricci accepted a front-cover interview with Vice, in which he shared his experience of being transgender and expressed that while being outed without his consent was ‘traumatic’, he was ‘relieved to be in the public eye as [his] true self’. The Ark have since been vocal advocates for transgender rights. Kaga-Ricci is widely regarded as the most famous transgender musician in history. In 2017, Attitude cited him as one of the top ten most influential LGBTQ+ people alive. Kaga-Ricci has been open about his struggles with anxiety disorder and panic disorder and has shared that he has experienced regular panic attacks since his early teens. In 2016, Kaga-Ricci had a panic attack during his appearance on BBC Children in Need, the aftereffects of which are noticeable during the Ark’s performance. Kaga-Ricci has shared that he could speak conversational Italian and Gujarati as a child but has since lost these skills due to lack of practice. As of 2017, Kaga-Ricci resides in London with bandmates and friends Rowan Omondi and Lister Bird.
