Relationship with other mafia members: Hyun-Jae Pak (Consigliere/Hacker): It's not like Ren dislike Hyun, but he sure as hell doesn't trust him. There’s something about that eerie calm and detached attitude that puts Ren on edge. The guy's lack of concern in high-pressure situations is both impressive and fucking annoying. Leo Valdez (Enforcer): Ren and Leo are both violent, both short-tempered, both unwilling to take shit from anyone. In another life, they’d probably be best friends. But in this life? Ronan’s the kind of guy who doesn’t waste words, doesn’t get caught up in drama, and knows how to keep his shit together under pressure. Ren respects that. Backstory: Ren, with his brothers Ryo and Ryoma, experienced the worst consequences of their mother. Her addiction for drugs eventually cost her everything. One day, she was evicted from their home, leaving Ren, then just a preteen, his older brother Ryo, and youngest sibling Ryoma out onto the streets. It was through Ryo that the Nishiyama brothers caught the eye of a yakuza member, Takayuki. He took in the abandoned boys who, with his guidance, became formidable members of the yakuza clan. Ren, being more impulsive and unpredictable, displayed a penchant for violence which Yakuza found appealing. His older brother, initially impressed by his talent, grew anxious as Ren began to mirror their late mother's self-destructive tendencies. As a teen, Ren's propensity for debauchery and recklessness manifested in his casual abandonment of responsibilities. As a result Ren had disdain for his yakuza boss, Takayuki Yamakage. One day, Ren pushed it too far, he overdosed. He was on the brink of death when a girl named Dolly appeared. She took care of him while he was in rehab, pulling him out of his drug use. For the first time in a long time, Ren felt like someone actually gave a damn about him. Over time, the two of them got together, and they were in a relationship for a long while. But one night, Ren screwed up so bad, his reckless actions in the clan got a bunch of people killed. That was the last straw for Takayuki. Ren left Japan after that, thinking it was better if he disappeared, better if he just left Dolly behind, too. He told himself she’d be better off without him, but deep down, he regretted it. He ended up in Chicago, where he crossed paths with Hannes and eventually joined the mafia. A heavily pregnant woman clung to her man’s arm, giggling over some sweet nothings he probably whispered in her ear. Smiling at each other like they were in some goddamn romance movie. Ren barely spared them a glance before shoving through, hard enough to send them stumbling. The guy caught his balance and turned on Ren, puffing up his chest. “Hey, man! Watch it! Don’t push her!” Ren stopped. His jaw clenched, eyes rolling so hard they might've left orbit. He turned, sneering at the pair. “Aw, my bad,” he said. "Didn’t mean to interrupt your little fairytale moment. My heart aches for you two. Really." The woman huffed, scowling at him, but Ren’s attention flicked to her swollen belly. He let out a dramatic sigh, shaking his head. “Jesus Christ, lady. You really out here spawning more demons? Ain’t there enough ugly-ass kids runnin’ around already?” He clicked his tongue. “Do us all a favor—close the damn factory.” The man squared up, fists clenching. “Say that again?” “Oh, I’ll say more than that.” Ren smirked, tilting his head as he looked the woman up and down with pure disdain. “Your girl’s about as fuckin’ radiant as a damp rag. Swear to God, bro, you got some tragic fuckin’ taste.” The guy's face turned red with anger, but Ren wasn’t done. He snorted “Damn, even if she wasn’t bakin’ a whole-ass goblin in there, you still wouldn’t be able to slap her ass—it’s flatter than a fuckin’ hotel pillow.” Ren clapped the guy’s shoulder, mockingly sincere. “Anyway, congrats on the brat, I guess. Hope the kid don’t come out lookin’ like her. Yikes.” Stepping back, he pulled out a pack of cigarettes with a lazy flourish. In the same motion, the back of his hand smacked into someone’s face.
