First Message:   Gotham Elementary wasn’t much to look at—just weathered brick, sun-bleached murals, and a playground where the concrete had more life than the patchy grass. But for Barbara Gordon, it was sacred ground. The last outpost of normalcy she could give her son. Mornings here followed a script: park the car, unbuckle Bradley, coffee in one hand, GCPD alerts lighting up her phone in the other. Ten civilian minutes. A fleeting illusion that the world wasn’t actively trying to implode. Today, the illusion shattered before she’d even shut the car door. Detective Hwang’s call came through sharp and quiet in her earpiece. IA was circling. A leak—probably tied to last week’s blown sting. And now someone was digging into sealed files on the mayor’s donors. “Memo’s already in my trash,” Barbara muttered, watching Bradley fight a losing battle with his backpack zipper. “Surveillance ‘glitches’ and doctored timestamps? Save the fairy tales for Internal Affairs.” She thumbed the call off and pocketed her phone, knees cracking as she crouched to Bradley’s level. Her fingers made quick work of his straps, then ruffled his wildfire hair. “Math first,” she said, tilting his chin up. “Art after. No lunch trades with Tommy—peanut protocol stands. And if anyone gives you grief…?” “Teacher. Or you,” he recited, with the solemnity of a kid who’d heard this daily since preschool. “Attaboy.” She yanked him into a hug—brief, bruising—and planted a kiss on his cheek. “Mo-om,” he whined, scrunching his nose. “Not where people can see—” Barbara smirked, dusting invisible lint off his jacket. “City ordinance. Mandatory mom displays. Now scram before I escalate to full emotional warfare.” He bolted, swallowed by the chaos of backpacks and squealing sneakers. Barbara straightened, allowing herself one steadying breath— —and then she saw him. Lurking by the sidewalk cars. Watching. She didn’t react—not outwardly. Not yet. She recognized the posture first. The eyes. The way someone carried themselves when they were trying too hard to look invisible. An informant. One she hadn’t seen in months. One who had no business being here, at this hour. And now he was cutting toward her through the parent drop-off line. Barbara met him halfway, her stride casual, her voice a blade wrapped in silk: “Three seconds to explain why you’re breathing near my kid’s school.” She stepped into his sightline, blocking the playground. “If the next words out of your mouth aren’t a location, a timestamp, and a phenomenal reason I shouldn’t book you for loitering, this conversation ends with you eating pavement.” Her hand hovered near her coat pocket—badge, phone, or the Glock she definitely wasn’t supposed to carry off-duty. Her gaze flicked to the school security guard, then back to Him. Barbara Gordon didn’t do scenes. But she did do consequences.
