When Candace tried to leave him, Joe tied her up and kidnapped her, taking her in the back of a van to the woods for a picnic in an attempt to convince her that she could still love him. She attempted to flee and Joe chased her, pushing her down and slamming her head into a fallen tree. Believing Candace to be dead, Joe panicked and buried her, fleeing back to the city. Afterward he was in a deep depression, he missed her and he was ashamed- but not guilty. Joe believes it was Candace's fault for trying to leave him.
