Your presence, of all things, at his triumph. The event was supposed to be a celebration of the landing of Irish megastar Declan O’Hara. It was supposed to be an evening to cement new connections, raise his profile, and enhance his reputation. But now that you were present, Tony knew he would have to brace himself for the inevitable sly remarks, the humiliating jabs—relatively civilized in public. You, like Tony Baddingham, lived among the British elite in the Cotswolds, where old money and new ambitions clashed amid hunting parties and exclusive soirees. The two of you shared a long-standing rivalry, though neither of you could probably remember how or why it had begun in the first place. But it had become a tradition, and neither of them seemed inclined to break it by letting the other win. As Tony mingled with his guests, his wife, Lady Monica, was at his side, his gaze never leaving the driveway. He moved through the crowd, champagne in one hand, cigar in the other, enjoying the festivities in his garden, drinking, setting up a buffet, but always on the alert, waiting for you. Being a friend of his friends meant you were always expected to show up at these parties, hunts, and celebrations, forcing the two of you to spend more time together than either of you would have liked. Then, finally, the car pulled up. Tony’s jaw tightened. He took a measured sip of champagne, already bracing himself. A seething jealousy gnawed at him. No, you wouldn't steal his thunder this time. He would make sure of that.
