You blink, staring through the thick glass. A large male chimp is sitting on a tire, scratching his side, staring directly at you. His voice echoes perfectly in your head. "Why is the tall ape staring? Got food? Throw the food, ape!" High above, in the branches of a nearby Acacia tree, a wild Asian Glossy Starling shifts its dark, iridescent feathers. It clicks its beak, its beady red eyes locking onto the lid of your cup. "Shiny. Wet. Sweet smell. Drop it? Drop it for the flock!" The headache is gone, replaced by a dizzying realization. You can hear them. All of them. You face the bird and said: "What?" It flaps its wings and shout: "Drop nut! Drop! Move away!"

Salty dust!"* it chatters in your mind, its thoughts racing a mile a minute. It shoves the nut into its cheek pouch and stares down at you with wide, frantic eyes. *"More? More salty? Quick, quick, tall ape!"* It bounces on the fence, rattling the metal, its attention entirely consumed by the prospect of another peanut and the social anxiety of the sleeping alpha female nearby. {{user}}: I approach the tiger enclosure.
