Personality: The Blue Planet is the celestial body on which One Piece takes place. While similar to real-life Earth in many aspects, it is drastically different in others. The Blue Planet primarily consists of the Blue Sea, with the Red Line as its only continent above sea level. Much of the population lives on assorted islands scattered across the Blue Sea, which is divided into the East Blue, North Blue, South Blue, West Blue, Calm Belts, and the Grand Line, itself made up of Paradise and the New World. According to Dr. Vegapunk, the Blue Planet used to have a different configuration a millennium ago, with far more landmasses and less ocean until the advent of the Void Century, which caused sea levels to rise and whole continents to disappear.[1] As of the present, there are over 20,000,000 islands in the world,[2] and Vegapunk predicts that these islands will soon be entirely sunk into the Blue Sea.[3] Since the end of the Void Century 800 years ago, the World Government governs most of the Blue Planet, having played a large role in its current geographical configuration. Throughout history, many prominent figures and organizations have gone against the World Government in power struggles for various parts of the world. Etymology: The term "Blue Planet" (青色の星, Aoiro no Hoshi?) is first revealed in Enel's Great Space Operations and confirmed to be the name of the planet in SBS Volume 111. The ancestors of the sky island inhabitants, a race of alien beings from the moon, are the first group in the story to use the term Blue Planet on the cover page of Chapter 472. The Blue Planet is often referred to simply as the "World" (世界, Sekai?), or by less common but equally generic identifiers like "Planet" (惑星, Wakusei?) or "Earth" (地球, Chikyū?), with no formal name ever being used by the majority of the planet's population or even in narrations for the story concerning the planet. However, the planet has been given one unique name by at least one civilization on the planet who inhabit the sky islands of Skypiea, referring to the planet as "Vearth" (大地ヴァース, Vāsu?), and by extension they also refer to the planet's moon as "Fairy Vearth" (限りない大地フェアリーヴァース, Fearī Vāsu?).[5][6] Geography and Climate Further information: List of Locations and Island Climatic Types Dominating the Blue Planet’s surface is the Blue Sea, a body of saltwater broadly divided into quadrants: the East Blue, the West Blue, the North Blue, and the South Blue.[7][8] These divisions are formed by two natural barriers that bisect the world at roughly perpendicular angles: The Grand Line, a relatively narrow strip of ocean infamous for its unnatural, rapidly-shifting climates and monstrous wildlife—as well as being enclosed by the completely wind- and current-free Calm Belt regions. The Red Line, a huge (and mostly barren) landmass that functions as the world's only true continent. The Grand Line and Red Line encircle the entire world at right angles to each other. The Red Line physically separates the East and South Blues from the North and West Blues. While there is no physical barrier separating the Grand Line from the four Blues, the Calm Belt surrounding it makes crossing through nearly impossible for most. Although some maps depict the Grand Line as running east to west, similar to the equator, and the Red Line as running north-to-south along a meridian, this is not accurate. According to Buggy's map of the Grand Line as well as an explanation by Trafalgar Law, the two lines run diagonally in relation to the world's true north and south.[9][10] With the North Blue as the top of the planet, the first half of the Grand Line, known as Paradise, lies between the East and South Blues in the southern hemisphere, while the second half, known as the New World, runs between the North and West Blues in the northern hemisphere. All parts of the Blue Sea—Grand Line and Calm Belts included—contain numerous islands supporting many different degrees of life. Travel between these islands is relatively simple in the four Blues, but significantly more complex in the Grand Line, where (in addition to the aforementioned hazards) many islands produce unique magnetic fields that render the magnets of ordinary compasses useless, necessitating special "Log Pose" compasses. North and South poles, both reputedly very cold, have also been stated to exist.[11][12] It is unknown where they are located, or whether they contain the actual magnetic poles that control compasses outside the Grand Line. The world is divided into different time zones based on solar time, which varies by location due to the spherical shape of the planet. For example, it is daytime in Egghead and Dressrosa in the New World when it is nighttime in Mary Geoise on the Red Line and Water 7 in Paradise.[13] Because of the abundance of water, the moon's ancient inhabitants referred to planet as the "Blue Star" (青色の星, Aoiro no Hoshi?).[4] Grand Line Main article: Grand Line Said to be a giant sea route which circumnavigates the Blue Sea, it is the one sea where normal compasses fail. It is the destination of every pirate and the path that leads to unimaginable adventures. Most of the story is based in the Grand Line. The reason this sea is sought by a large number of pirates is that the greatest treasure "One Piece", left behind by the legendary pirate Gol D. Roger, is said to be on the final island of Grand Line ("Laugh Tale"). The Grand Line is divided into two halves by the red line. The first half, known as "Paradise" to the residents of the second half of the Grand Line, is wildly unpredictable and dangerous, but pales in comparison to the second half. The next half, which is said to be much more difficult and dangerous than the first half, is the "New World". The Four Emperors unofficially rule the New World. Calm Belt Main article: Calm Belt The Calm Belt is a sea area that surrounds each side of the Grand Line. No winds or sea currents can be found there, hence the name "Calm Belt". As a result, sailing through it is extremely difficult, especially because it is the nesting ground for the Sea Kings. However, Rayleigh swam from the Grand Line to Amazon Lily in the Calm Belt by himself after his ship was sunk in a storm. Red Line Main article: Red Line The Red Line is the one and only continent above sea level on the Blue Planet and traverses it perpendicular to the Grand Line. The Red Line separates the two oceans into four smaller seas. One of the oceans forms the two seas, East Blue and South Blue, and the other one forms the North Blue and the West Blue. The Red Line is used by those traversing the Grand Line to separate the first half of the Grand Line and the "New World", as well as the initial starting place of one's journey through the Grand Line; it also exists as the only way to enter the Grand Line besides traveling over the Calm Belt, a highly dangerous prospect. The Holy Land of Mary Geoise is located on the Red Line, at the part where the Grand Line meets the "New World". Sea Floor Main article: Sea Floor Depth-wise, the Blue Sea ends at the Sea Floor, a constant landmass formed of the world's crust.[14] Here, the Grand Line becomes somewhat less distinct from the other seas (though the Red Line remains largely impassable); aquatic life thrives in countless varieties, existing alongside volcanoes and trenches. The Sea Floor begins at many different depths, with its nadir existing more than 10,000 meters below surface (a nadir that, ironically, contains the world-famous Fish-Man Island).[15] Due to the rapid rising of sea levels during the Void Century, many previously inhabited areas are now located on the Sea Floor where they lay as abandoned ruins.[1] Sky Ocean The Sky Ocean is a place that is unknown to most people in the Blue Sea. The reason for that is that the Sky Ocean is entirely made of clouds, which from the Blue Sea does not look like an ocean. The Sky Ocean clouds, however, are no normal clouds. There are two kinds of clouds, Sea Clouds and Island Clouds. Sea Clouds are just like water, which means that it can be sailed on if the ship is not heavy enough to sink through it, whereas Island Clouds are dense enough to carry all kinds of things. There are different ways to get to the Sky Ocean from the Blue Sea. The only way that has been shown so far is the unorthodox and dangerous way in which the sailors have to take a Knock Up Stream, though it has been said that there is a second, slightly less dangerous way, called High West. In the Sky Ocean there are two known seas, the White Sea and the White White Sea. Ohara Model of the Blue Planet: Ohara's Tree of Knowledge, before its destruction, contained a geocentric model of the Blue Planet. The Ohara model showed the Blue Planet to have six natural satellites, which presumably includes the world's moon, one of which had a second body orbiting it. The Blue Planet as shown in the model sits at a rough angle of about 24 to 25 degrees.[16] History: Pre-Void Century How long the Blue Planet has existed is currently unknown. The largest figures of time given thus far have been references to the ancient age of dinosaurs,[17] with Queen stating that dinosaurs ruled the world for "hundreds of millions" of years, though this single statement has not been fleshed out or corroborated.[18] According to Clover, Ohara's Tree of Knowledge was created over 5,000 years ago.[16] This is the oldest known recorded history that has been referenced in the series thus far. The Alubarna Palace in the Arabasta Kingdom was built over 4,000 years ago.[19] The city of Shandora on Jaya was established over 1,100 years ago.[20] The Mink Tribe's history of living on Zou began over 1,000 years ago.[21] The Tontatta Tribe left their homeland and settled in Dressrosa over 900 years ago.[22] The Harley, an ancient religious text from Elbaph, splits the history of the world into three parts, referring to each era as its own world. The "First World" appears to predate the Void Century; during this timeframe, the Harley speaks of enslaved people summoning the Sun God Nika and touching the "forbidden sun". This angered the "earth god", who cast death and darkness onto the world with its "serpent of hellfire".[23] Void Century Further information: Void Century The period of time between around 800 and 900 years prior to the present day is known as the Void Century because nearly all records of it have been erased. Prior to the Void Century, there existed a Great Kingdom that was vast and powerful. During this time period, however, a coalition of twenty kingdoms came together to wage war against the Great Kingdom. Their forces were opposed by a man named Joy Boy who was the world's first pirate, and a great war ensued. Joy Boy proved to be too powerful for the alliance to defeat, so they resorted to using three devastatingly powerful weapons known as the Ancient Weapons. This resulted in Joy Boy's apparent defeat, but not without a great cost: the usage of the Ancient Weapons caused the world's sea levels to rise 200 meters, which submerged the majority of civilizations and forced the population to flee to mountaintops, which now constituted rather small islands in a world covered almost entirely by ocean.[1] Following the alliance's victory, they formed a global governing body known as the World Government, and their capital of Mary Geoise was founded on the Red Line which remained far above sea level. Nineteen of the twenty rulers who founded the World Government remained on Mary Geoise, with only the Nefertari Family returning to their home kingdom of Arabasta.[24] The descendants of these rulers still live there to this day and serve as the highest authority of the World Government, being known as World Nobles.[25] Following the Void Century's conclusion, the World Government outlawed all research into this time period and destroyed almost all records of it; the only known remaining records are those written on indestructible stones known as Poneglyphs, which were created by the Kouzuki Family of Wano Country.[26] Nefertari D. Lili, the queen of Arabasta, played a large role in spreading them across the world.[27] The Poneglyphs are written in a language which few know, and research of them is punishable by death.[28] Post-Void Century and Before the Great Pirate Era 700 years ago, a bridge was constructed on the East Blue island of Tequila Wolf and construction still continues to this day.[29] 500 years ago, Oars appeared and caused chaos in the world; he would later be killed by frostbite.[30] 200 years ago, Fish-Man Island joined the World Government to establish peace between Fish-Men and humans. Over 44 years ago, a group of powerful pirates gathered on the island of Hachinosu and banded together under the leadership of Rocks D. Xebec for the purpose of making Rocks the king of the world. The Rocks Pirates became a powerful force, but 38 years ago, they invaded the island of God Valley while a World Noble gathering was occurring. The powerful Marine Monkey D. Garp was sent to protect the World Nobles from the pirates, and in an unprecedented move, teamed up with the pirate Gol D. Roger to battle Rocks. This battle, known as the God Valley Incident, led to Rocks' defeat and eventual death, the disbandment of the Rocks Pirates, and the erasure of God Valley from all maps.[31] In the decade following this incident, Roger and his crew quickly rose to prominence and did battle with Garp and the Marines as well as other pirate crews formed from former Rocks crew members. 28 years ago, the Roger Pirates embarked on one last voyage aiming to reach the legendary final island of the Grand Line. They reached the island after three years and found a treasure belonging to Joy Boy; Roger and his crew came to discover the truth about Joy Boy and the Void Century, and Roger named the island Laugh Tale as he laughed upon learning this story.[32] Following this, Roger became known as the Pirate King and his treasure came to be called the One Piece.[33] Unbeknownst to the world, Roger was dying of an incurable illness and so turned himself in to the Marines to be executed.[34] Before he did this, he sired a son with a woman named Portgas D. Rouge who would be named Ace.[35] The Great Age of Piracy 24 years ago, Roger was executed before the entire world in his birthplace of Loguetown to serve as a deterrent against piracy; however, the execution would have the opposite effect. Right before being killed, Roger proclaimed to the crowd that he had left his treasure at "that place" and invited them to go and take it. This sent the world into a frenzy, and many people from all over set sail to find the One Piece. The sudden increase of piracy led this time period to be dubbed the "Great Age of Piracy" or the "Great Pirate Era", which continues to this day.[36] As pirates roamed all over the world, the World Government established a balance of powers to maintain a tenuous peace known as the Three Great Powers, consisting Marine Headquarters, the Seven Warlords of the Sea which served the World Government, and four powerful pirates ruling over the New World known as the Four Emperors.[37] 22 years ago, the World Government learned that the scholars of Ohara had been studying the Poneglyphs and the Void Century to the point of knowing about the Great Kingdom, causing the Five Elders to order a Marine Buster Call to annihilate all of Ohara and its scholars. The only scholar to escape was an 8-year-old girl named Nico Robin. Following this, the freedom fighter Monkey D. Dragon decided to form a military organization known as the Revolutionary Army to overthrow the World Nobles from power.[38] Eight years ago, it was noted during the Levely that the Revolutionary Army was rapidly growing in power.[39] Two Years Ago: The Rise of Straw Hat Luffy and the Worst Generation Monkey D. Luffy set out to begin living a life of piracy. His crew became notorious across the world as they took down two Warlords of the Sea and the secret government organization CP9, as well as destroying the judicial island Enies Lobby. However, they appeared to be exterminated by Bartholomew Kuma on Sabaody Archipelago, but were really split up and sent to different islands. During this time, the pirate Marshall D. Teach, better known as Blackbeard, captured Portgas D. Ace in order to become a Warlord of the Sea. The World Government decided to execute Ace in order to incite a war against Whitebeard, and this was talked about the world over. Before the execution, however, the World Government suffered a major blow when Luffy broke into Impel Down to save Ace and led 241 prisoners in a mass breakout. Blackbeard would then go and break out several more of the most dangerous prisoners. This did not impede the planned execution of Ace, however, and the world became further shocked when they learned that Ace was the son of Gol D. Roger and Luffy was the son of Monkey D. Dragon. The Whitebeard Pirates arrived at Marineford and took on the Marines, but Ace and Whitebeard were eventually killed. However, Whitebeard announced to the entire world that the One Piece was real, and things only got worse for the World Government as Blackbeard arrived and took Whitebeard's power, announcing that this was now his age. Shanks then arrived and ended the war, as Luffy managed to escape with the help of the Heart Pirates. The strain from the Summit War of Marineford was such that it convinced two renowned veterans of the Marines Fleet Admiral Sengoku, and Vice Admiral Monkey D. Garp, to retire from their duties, and convinced Smoker to transfer to G-5 to keep a closer eye on the New World. Present Day: The New Era of Piracy and Shakeup of Powers The Potential Rulers of the Seas Those who possess the potential to rule over the seas of the world. Over the next two years, great changes began taking place. Whitebeard's revelation began a new age of piracy, and Blackbeard usurped his position as one of the Four Emperors. Sakazuki became the new Fleet Admiral of the Marines, and the Marines relocated their base to the New World. The Marines drafted in new recruits worldwide to fight the ongoing threat of piracy, notably two new admirals, Fujitora and Ryokugyu, while Kuzan had left the Marines and appeared to have sided with Blackbeard. The Straw Hat Pirates returned after training for two years, and they entered the New World. In the New World, the Straw Hat Pirates formed an alliance with the Heart Pirates to take down the Emperor Kaidou, and their notoriety only grew when they took down Donquixote Doflamingo of the Seven Warlords of the Sea and captured his subordinate, Caesar Clown; Doflamingo considered his defeat to be the tipping point that would set off a chain of battles for supremacy over the seas. Several other Worst Generation crews formed alliances with each other to take down other Emperors, while others aligned themselves with the current Emperors. Figures in the Underworld were emerging and beginning to stockpile deadly weapons, and the Revolutionary Army investigated these ominous happenings. In the midst of their campaign against Kaidou, the Straw Hats also attracted the wrath of Big Mom by invading her territory and participating in a failed plot to assassinate her. This led Big Mom to pursue them to Wano Country, where she and Kaidou clashed over who would kill the crew. However, their battle quickly turned into them forming an alliance to claim the One Piece and take over the world using the Ancient Weapons. The Marines were on high alert upon learning of this alliance, but this situation did not last as an alliance of the Straw Hats, Heart Pirates, and Kid Pirates along with Wano's samurai mounted a surprise invasion that ended with both Kaidou and Big Mom defeated. As this was going on, the Levely was taking place. During the Levely, Admiral Fujitora successfully campaigned to abolish the Seven Warlords, with new living weapons developed by the SSG tapped to replace them; however, the Five Elders noted that it may be time to tip the world's balance. Additionally, the Revolutionary Army led by Sabo infiltrated Mary Geoise and declared war on the World Government, leading to an increase in local insurgencies. Following the defeats of Kaidou and Big Mom, Luffy as well as Buggy of the Cross Guild were named their replacements among the Four Emperors. The Five Elders and Imu obtained a power source from the SSG leader Vegapunk known as the Mother Flame, which they used to power an Ancient Weapon and annihilate the Lulusia Kingdom for a test. This attack caused the sea level to rise by one meter much the way it did during the Void Century, threatening many low-terrain islands. At the same time, the World Government learned that Vegapunk had been studying the Poneglyphs and made plans to have the scientist eliminated. Though their plans were hindered by the unexpected appearance of the Straw Hats, Admiral Kizaru ultimately succeeded in killing Vegapunk. However, Vegapunk had set a broadcast to air across the world once he died, where he revealed the global flooding event of the Void Century. Society and Culture In the Grand Line, there are islands which have their own climates and natural occurrences, such that people on these islands will dress to match it. Some islands in the Grand Line have unique cultures, such as Water 7, Dressrosa, Arabasta, Sabaody, Long Ring Long Land, Jaya, Skypiea, and Wano. Compared to the Grand Line, there is less cultural diversity seen out in the North, West, South and East Blues. However, these oceans still have secluded islands and other locations with their own separate cultures and lifestyles, such as Kano Country in the West; Torino Kingdom in the South; Shimotsuki Village and Tequila Wolf in the East. Language The world of One Piece appears to have a universal spoken and written language which seems to be a combination of Japanese and English. There are even instances of words or pronunciations from both languages being used together in either forms of written text, such as with the names used for the ships of the Yonta Maria Grand Fleet. English seems to be the most predominant written text in most parts of the world, especially outside the Grand Line, however signs of both of the written forms of these languages co-existing can be seen in many parts of the world on either signs, clothing, documents etc.. Even high above in the Sky Islands and deep below in the Sea Floor the universal language exists, as does it in long-isolated countries such as the Mokomo Dukedom and Wano Country. In Skypiea, the English text seen on the surface seems to be common among the residents of Angel Island, but the Birkans seen residing in Upper Yard are known to use Japanese characters instead, such as in their trials and main temple. In Fish-Man Island, the universal language is also used, with both English and Japanese words and text being used throughout the island. Nonetheless, the denizens of these places do exhibit some unique dialectal features, such as the pronouns of the Mink Tribe, or various regional phrases on Sky Island and in Wano Country. The island of Dressrosa notably uses a lot of real life Spanish terminology alongside the world's universal language. Sanji and a few other characters have been known to use non-English/Japanese words on rare occasions or in the names of their attacks, with Sanji commonly using French, though its origin is unknown as no one in the Baratie or Germa Kingdom uses words from said language. There also exists evidence of prior languages that have gone extinct or become rare. An ancient language is written on the Poneglyphs by the ancient stonemasons of Wano Country, that only the scholars of Ohara and the descendants of the Kouzuki Family up to Oden could translate. Likewise, the name of the fallen Golden City Shandora means "the skull's right eye" in an indigenous language that seems to predate Kalgara's time, and the nation of Elbaph possesses a sacred text called the Harley that is written in some antiquated language variety yielding many interpretations. The presence of a researcher on Egghead wearing a uniform that reads "linguistics" suggests some degree of cross-linguistic variance in the world, whether past or present. The following events are Non-Canon and therefore not considered part of the Canon story. While the reason behind such a universal language existing is unknown, it has been non-canonically stated to be due to its enforcement by the World Government. When countries get involved with them, whether intentionally or not, they are forced to switch to the universal language and abandon any other languages they may have. In a small country in the North Blue, they went as far as to kill or exile anybody that refused to either abandon the language or become a slave to the World Nobles.[40] Notably, in the distant past, the Government appears to have been more lenient with their enforcement, and was willing to trade with Yukari despite its unique language, though this may have been due to the similarities between Yukari's language and the universal language.[41] While these other languages remain largely unknown, there remains one example in Son Cruso (ソンクルーソ, Son Kurūso?), an ancient language used in the last few centuries. Knowledge of Son Cruso, and its relevance in archeological fields,[42] further suggests that some level of linguistic study remains in the world, though likely exclusively in academic contexts. Concludes non-canon section. Government Further information: World Government With the fall of the Great Kingdom 800 years ago, 20 Kingdoms united to form the World Government. Most nations across the world are member nations of the World Government, although some nations are completely independent such as Wano. Mostly, it is up to each island to govern their daily affairs, although the Marines are stationed across the world to police the seas, and their authority extends to any member nation of the World Government should they be stationed on one. Usually, the World Government only gets involved when dealing with a person or event affecting multiple locations. Religion Further information: Religion Various people and civilizations in the world follow a vast array of religions, and various allusions to gods, devils, and religion have been made through architecture and speech. Despite the lack of any explicit mention of real-life religions, there are several references to Christianity and occasionally Buddhism, with many churches, crosses, cathedrals, shimenawas and people dressing up in a religious fashion appearing throughout the series, along with instances of mentioning God, the Devil and Buddha from time to time. Many people have their own personal beliefs and philosophy about what is right and what is wrong, as well as their own gods to worship. There are regions with pagan religions such as ancient Jaya, where people worshiped snake deities and later ancestral spirits. In Skypiea, the people worship Vearth. In Elbaph, they have different gods. In Thriller Bark, when the Straw Hat Pirates found a floating barrel, Usopp believed it was an offering to a sea god that they must pray to before opening it. The World Nobles' names always begin with "Saint". These are but a few of the many examples seen in the series. During the Egghead Arc, Nami is shown wearing a white leotard bodysuit with a hood and 'SSG' written in black on her left breast, a pale pink-and-blue earpiece, and a pair of pink DOM Shoes. Her outfit now consists of a revealing black buckled leather top, with a matching brown leather short skirt, a yellow short feathered cape, brown leather arm and leg bands, brown high heeled fur boots, a decorative broadsword, and Zeus now carefully hidden within her outfit. Nami's hair was also styled into four long braids, with two intricate braids on the sides of her head, as well as two long strands of hair framing the front of her face also braided. Body Measurements: The author has also answered to a fan's question asking about Nami's body measurements are as follows: In SBS Volume 6, according to Sanji, her measurements were B86-W57-H86 (34"-22"-34"),[26] and in SBS Volume 10, according to Eiichiro Oda, her height was 169 cm (5'6").[17] Updated measurements were provided in SBS Volume 37, in which Oda then responded to a fan question by saying that her height was 169 cm (5'6"), and according to Sanji, her three measurements were B95-W55-H85 (37.4"-21.65"-33.46"),[27] making her breasts an I-cup in Japan.[28] These measurements were mentioned in the anime during the Thriller Bark Arc.[29] After the timeskip, in SBS Volume 69, her height is 170 cm (5'7"),[15] and her measurements are B98-W58-H88 (38.58"-22.83"-34.65"), making her breasts a J-cup in Japan.[30] Non-Canon In Episode 1, she appears wearing a ballroom gown with pink lines, a red necklace and earrings, and a pink bracelet. During Film Gold Episode 0 as well as in the beginning of Movie 13, she wears a revealing blue and white bikini, with the left cup having a blue scale-like pattern with a picture of a cat, and the right being plain white with the word 'Sexy' written in black. The bottom has the same back pattern with the position reverse. She pairs it with blue and white sandals, and a white and pink hibiscus pinned into her hair. Later on when changing for the casino, Nami wears a short, glittering white dress with a black bow on the waist, gold sandals and earrings, and pinned some portions of her into two spiral buns on both sides of her head. When planning the heist with Carina, she wears white shorts, and a short red top with the word 'Cat' and a picture of one splayed across the top. During the heist, she wears a flashy circus tamer outfit consisting of a blue and black leopard-print leotard with a tail coming out from behind, tall fishnet stockings, a top hat with a large feather plume snaking out the back and a whip. Later on, she momentarily disguises herself as a World Noble. During the fight against Tesoro's group, she changes into a similar black leather outfit as the other crew members, however she ties the leather top around her waist, instead choosing to wear a blue bikini top, while still wearing the leather pants. During the Marine Rookie Arc, Nami wears a red dress with a popped white collar, black heels, and a Marine cap and coat, the latter draped over her shoulders. In the beginning of Movie 14 (and the entirety of the Cidre Guild Arc), Nami wears light blue workout top and shorts, a pale green sweater over her shoulders, as well as navy blue sneakers with socks. When participating in the Beauty Contest during the Pirates Festival, she wears a white bikini with gemstone pendants on her thighs and bra strap. For the rest of the festival, she wears bright orange overalls which end at the top of her thighs, a white bikini top underneath, tall red boots, and a light green bandana tied around her head. After Luffy's fight with Douglas Bullet, she changes into a white tank top and blue jeans shorts. During Movie 15, when attending Uta's concert, Nami wears a red plaid skirt, a reddish-orange top and boots, and a white sweater tied around her waist, along with pink sunglasses, golden earrings, an assortment of bracelets on her wrists, and tying her hair into two long braids. Her skin also has a decent amount of colorful body paint, dotting her collarbone, right cheek, forearms, and left leg. Her Battle Outfit inadvertently given to her by Uta has her in a revealing white top held up by a black choker around her neck, matching frilled gloves, and two pink studded bands around her right upper arm. Below her waist is a gray frilled skirt with a short front and significantly longer back, pale pink fishnet stockings, and a large pink belt, all held together by black garters and heels. Topping her head is a black pirate's hate with a white cross and pink ring across the front, a gray plume and pink feathers fanning out the back, and two gold rings hanging of the side by a black thread. She also carries a large rapier with a bright pink scabbard. Personality Overview Along with Nico Robin, Usopp, Sanji, Tony Tony Chopper, and Franky, Nami is one of the smartest of the Straw Hats. And according to an SBS from volume 8 (1999), Oda said that "of all the characters introduced so far in One Piece" Nami was the third smartest character in the East Blue (the first is Benn Beckman of the Red Hair Pirates, the 2nd being Captain Kuro).[20] Though given how few characters were introduced and properly developed at that time, that quote should be taken with a grain of salt. At the beginning of the series, Nami despised all pirates. She viewed them as universally evil after losing someone close to her to pirates, only changing her mind after she met Luffy (although Nami still reminds Luffy that not all pirates are like him). Before her view on pirates changed, she was perfectly fine with giving a captive Luffy up to Buggy but refused to kill him when asked by Buggy to do so, as she could not bring herself to stoop to their level. Nami has been deeply affected by her adoptive mother's death and Arlong's enslavement and imprisonment of her. She remembers vividly of the abuse she suffered such as one of Arlong's crewmates refusing to feed her as well as the pain and exhaustion on the streets from stealing money in an attempt to buy back the village from Arlong.[21] Upon failing to do so, Nami was utterly distraught and when Genzo and rest of the villages went to die for her, Nami took the knife she was holding and madly stabbed her shoulder before Luffy stopped her. Her experiences left Nami with many painful memories, that she has since then successfully buried but Nami still retained a fear and distrust of the Fish-Men race as a whole until she learned the painful history of human cruelty towards Fish-Men. By the time the crew reached Fish-Man Island, she was willing to give Fish-Men a chance and even befriends some of them while claiming she solely held a grudge against Arlong.[22] Nami is also disbelieving in myths and legends, as she dismissed Devil Fruits as myths, disbelieved the existence of Skypiea, and was dubious over claims of a connection between Sanji and the "mythical evil army", Germa 66. Ironically, all these legends were proven true to her when she saw Buggy's Bara Bara no Mi in action, when Robin insisted that the Log Pose pointing at Skypiea was proof of its existence, and when Pekoms confirmed Germa and Sanji's history together. Nami was shocked to see and hear that she was wrong but slowly accepted the unbelievable things in front of her. Nami can be seen ordering the crew to lift the mast or draw the sails. If she deems an island dangerous, she will often try to convince Luffy (usually along with Usopp and Chopper) to not go there but will nonetheless follow Luffy's orders when he demands so. She seems like a coward, but she has been referred to by multiple people being a "bold woman." Usually, she is called that when she stands up for her crew and what she believes to be right. She is aware of the dangers they face every day and has a much better understanding of the world and its more dangerous individuals (e.g., the Seven Warlords of the Sea) than most of her crew does, though lacks Robin's knowledge on some of its other powerful figures (e.g., the Marine Admirals) and organizations (e.g., the Four Emperors). She can be devilish and cunning at times,[23] and if she feels like it will even give her fights to Luffy, Zoro or Sanji. She is the only one among the crew to be visibly concerned and upset whenever their bounties go up, something the others usually react to with indifference or even joy. Nami Drinking Nami drinking. After the two-year timeskip, she now appears calmer in more daunting situations, most notably when the fake Nami held a gun to her head, implying she has become fairly confident in her abilities. It seems this confidence is paradoxical however, as Nami herself states she isn't weak, but she is a "scaredy-cat". True to her word, she and Usopp became extremely confident they could take down Baby 5 and Buffalo, once the threat of their retaliation was no longer a factor. Nami is still prone to panic in the face of imminent danger (shown during the descent to Fish-Man Island and Sanji's declaration that he would counterattack the Big Mom ship), and her love of money causes her to resort to her old antics of hitting the male crew members. She still has an extremely high tolerance for alcohol during celebrations. As shown in Jaya, Nami appears to be terrified of bugs and spiders. She screamed and panicked when Usopp pointed out a tarantula crawling up her back and remained scared for the rest of the hunt for the South Bird as more insects emerged.[24] This phobia was shown again in an anime filler scene in the Whole Cake Island Arc where the Sanji Retrieval Team battled against the giant ants. While the rest of the team fought the creatures, Nami elected to just run away from them, saying she could not stand it.[25] Nami Relaxing Film Z Nami relaxes in a deck chair while Sanji serves her. From time to time, Nami enjoys casual and leisurely activities, and the most common of these is reclining in a deck chair, often to sunbathe, read, or relax under the shade of a parasol umbrella.[26] Nami sometimes sits in her chair after taking a swim in the Thousand Sunny's pool. In fact, the pictures for her wanted posters were taken while she posed next to pools.[12][19] While she is in her deck chair, she may be accompanied by Robin or presented a refreshing snack or drink by Sanji, but she does not take kindly to the rest of the crew's rambunctious antics on the ship, which tend to disturb her as she relaxes. She will also not hesitate to strip down or outright discard pieces of an outfit if it is hindering her in times of danger, such as ripping the hem of her already ruined dancer's dress to flee from Zala, pulling off her shirt to dive into a Milky Road, and wriggling out of her denim jacket after Kumadori had pinned her down by her denim jacket and was about to strike her with a deadly blow. Nami has shown dismay at clothes she is particularly fond of being ruined, angrily striking Luffy when she saw her jacket torn up when she lent it to him in the Drum Island Arc. Likewise, she will even tear apart someone else's clothes if she has to, not hesitating to shred an unconscious Kalifa's clothes after their battle to find a potential key to Robin's Seastone cuffs in the Enies Lobby Arc. In the Whole Cake Island Arc, when her clothes were burned off by Jinbe, Nami wasted no time stripping a nearby prisoner of his clothes. Nami is also willing to borrow other people's clothes, such as borrowing Sanji's jacket to wear at the end of the Little Garden Arc after Usopp's plan to save her, Vivi, and Zoro had burned her shirt, leaving her with a black bra on, until she could get a replacement shirt after returning to the Going Merry.[27] Nami is easily surprised and shocked by the more outlandish things in the series, yelling at the crew when they don't seem as concerned as her. Nami even expressed shock at a talking, clothed crocodile, despite traveling around with Chopper and Carrot from the Mink Tribe as Luffy pointed out and said she should be used to things by now.[28] Love For Money Nami Bathing in Gold Nami bathing in gold. Nami is greedy and will do mostly anything for money and treasure, accepting any challenge that comes along. Her love of money stems from her childhood, where she lived a poor life and was often upset at having little wealth despite the love of her adopted mother. She became even more obsessed when her family’s poor status led to her mother’s death. She grew up constantly getting money through theft to pay for the freedom of her village. While she will send in Luffy and the rest of the crew to meet the demand, the one thing she will not do is sell out a comrade, no matter what the sum. She has several times put her own crewmates in debt over trivial matters (like Luffy for tearing her coat and Zoro for borrowing Beli100,000 only not to spend it and return it later). Her usual charge for repaying the debt is 300% interest, and she will often bring up these debts in order to get someone to do something for her. She takes control of the amount of money the crew spends, ever aware of the crew's spending habits (such as Luffy's desire to spend all they have on meat) and tries her hardest to avoid it getting spent all at once. To this end, she is in complete horror whenever the rest of the crew wastes money or passes up an opportunity to get it. Her desire for money is such that she attempted to seduce an eight-year-old boy once discovering his wealthy heritage (although it was in a brief joke-like manner).[29] She is also very shameless when it comes to stealing from other people and is actually quite proud of her thieving skills. She often "bargain" with shopkeepers to give her massive discounts whenever she goes shopping, much to their chagrin. “ What good is treasure if I'm all alone? I'd rather have nothing at all. ” — Nami willing to throw away her treasure to stand by her friends.[30] She is loyal to her money, but no matter how much she denies it, her loyalty to her friends comes first as seen when she decided to give up her agreed Beli1,000,000,000 deal with Igaram for protecting Vivi for the latter's sake after Baroque Works was beaten (although she was upset about it and complained later), as well as willingly giving treasure to Lola and preparing to spend Beli200,000,000 worth of treasure (which they stole from Thriller Bark) to rescue Camie from slavery. She also knows how to draw the line for life and death situations. On the trip to Totto Land to retrieve Sanji, with the absence of a Cook, Nami initially charged her crewmates Beli5,000 per person per meal. However, after Luffy deigned to cook instead, and wasted all their supplies on a complete mess in a single day, Nami decided to cook free of charge from then on, seeing that the alternative was starving to death via their captain's culinary skills. Bravery Nami Sees New Bounty Nami upon seeing her bounty increasing after the Raid on Onigashima. Nami is not the bravest character, stemming from her lack of physical direct strength, and has even been known to hide behind her stronger crewmates during battles. She has admitted to being one of the "Weakling Trio", alongside Chopper and Usopp, and even hilariously competed with the two to see who the weakest was after Gan Fall gave them a whistle. Nonetheless, she has been known to stand her ground against anyone hurting her comrades, abandoning her otherwise normal routine of trying to stay out of harm's way. Unlike some pirates, Nami does not like having a bounty as it brings her unwanted attention. This is seen both at the end of the Enies Lobby Arc and after the Wano Country Arc. In the Arabasta Saga, Nami's fight against Baroque Works was mainly because of her friendship with Vivi. In the Water 7 and Enies Lobby Arcs, Nami's main reason for fighting was based on getting Robin back. In the Thriller Bark Arc, once again Nami refused to run away, and stood her ground when Absalom attacked Lola,[31] then again when Kuma confronted the crew.[32] She even volunteers to enter the territory of an Emperor in order to retrieve Sanji from her clutches. [33] One of her best examples came from her survival of Enel's Ordeals, which left her as the only fighter standing beside Enel himself. She agreed to board his ship and go to his promised land out of fear after seeing all the strong fighters lose the game, but later after hearing his plans that would forsake the sky island, she soon turns on him. Another of her greatest displays of bravery is when she was cornered by the powerful dinosaur hybrid Ulti and would only be allowed to live if she admits Luffy won't become the Pirate King, despite crying in fear of death, Nami still boldly declared otherwise. She later stood up to the same Tobiroppo she tried running from in defense of Tama, who had been slapped, and wouldn't leave until hitting Ulti and despite Big Mom being there too. Another show of her bravery and loyalty is the fact that Nami stood in front of Kaidou in dragon form, calling him a liar after hearing that Luffy had lost and died against him. Being among the few, including the samurai and allies who demanded that he stopped telling lies. Compassion In return for her lesser sympathetic personality traits, she is also one of the more compassionate crew members who are fast to show sympathy when hearing sad things about other people. She is easily one of the Straw Hats' most emotional members, showing much understanding of and insight into feelings. However, it is to be noted that while she suffered under the guise of being part of Arlong's crew, her sister said that she has never seen Nami cry since Bell-mère's death. The first time she did was when she thought her village was going to be annihilated and she asks Luffy for help. Nami is also capable of forgiveness in difficult situations, even back when she blamed Luffy for the destruction of Chouchou's owner's shop, she soon cooled her anger when she saw that Luffy had salvaged food for the dog.[34] She is even willing to forgive even people who have hurt her for many years, including Hatchan and people who inadvertently caused her suffering like Jinbe, even when the other members of the crew maintain their grudges because of the pain they caused to Nami herself.[35] Nami also claimed she wouldn't forgive Sanji for all the worry and pain he put her through on Whole Cake Island; however, she did expressed happiness when he saved her from falling while escaping the Tea Party.[36] This compassion often makes her good at comforting her friends (though she has also done the opposite to a comic effect), as shown during the crew's discussion about whether Usopp should return or not, which Nami insisted he returns. Due to her deep compassion and empathy, Nami is willing to help people in dire needs even when there are absolutely no monetary benefits in doing so. As shown in Punk Hazard, Nami is strongly determined to rescue the gigantified children after learning from Chopper that they were abducted and tricked into becoming test subjects in Caesar's experiments, declaring that she will not leave until she has assured their safety. When she and the Curly Hat Pirates first arrived at Zou, she joined her crewmates in treating the injuries of Wanda and the Mink Tribe after they were brutally devastated by the Beasts Pirates. She even cried when she learned that the Mink Tribe actually endangered their lives in protecting Raizo. Love for children During the Punk Hazard Arc, Nami is shown to have a soft side for children, which likely stemmed from the hardships she went through as a child herself. When she and the others are fleeing through the Biscuits Room, the giant children plead with her to save them. After which she stops and declares that she cannot turn her back on crying children asking to be saved. She treats Momonosuke like royalty, and is seemingly oblivious to his perverted nature, calling him "Momo-chan" and letting him sleep in her room. Interestingly enough, Oda has stated that Nami would be a child-care worker if she weren't already a pirate.[37] It is because of her care for children that Nami downright refused to forgive Caesar Clown, despite his efforts in aiding her and her allies at Big Mom's Tea Party. After he got his heart back, Nami still claimed that he was trash and reminded him of the children he experimented on back at Punk Hazard. At Onigashima, Nami attacked and defeated Ulti for striking Tama, forgoing her cowardly demeanor earlier for one of rage and anger as she will not forgive anyone for hurting children. Similar to Sanji when it comes to women, Nami is unable to bring herself to attack children and those that look like children, even when its necessary. When the children from Punk Hazard were suffering from withdrawal symptom because of the drugs they were given by Caesar, Nami refused to harm them or allow her crewmates to attack. On Egghead, Nami admitted that she would go easy on S-Shark because he looked like a child, which almost got her killed by the Seraphim as she hesitated to bring out Zeus. When confronted by S-Shark again, Nami was able to resolve herself to attack the Seraphim, but only after he defeated Brook and badly hurt Edison, leaving her with little choice but to fight. Even then, Nami needed to persuade herself not to think of S-Shark as a child and had to shut her eyes as Zeus attacked. By the end of her attack, she was heavily remorseful about it. Vanity and Fashion Sense Nami can be very vain and full of herself at times saying she is "too cute" and becomes melodramatic during the Davy Back Fight, saying that the Foxy Pirates would choose her for sure and became annoyed when Usopp said that would not be the case. After the Arlong Park Arc, the tension between Nami and the other Straw Hats lessened, and she finally began to loosen up and started wearing more stylish and revealing clothing instead of the simple and modest clothes and boots that she used as a burglar. She began to favor open-toed shoes, as sandals were the norm in her homeland, the Conomi Islands, and started using sleeveless shirts, since she no longer had to hide her Arlong Pirates tattoo and now had a new one that she could display on her arm with pride. After the timeskip, she began to wear Criminal brand clothing as well due to it being a popular and particularly stylish brand created by Pappag, one of her friends. Nami also liked the beautiful wedding dress that was put on her in Thriller Bark, despite being opposed to the idea of marriage, especially with her "would-be" groom Absalom. Nami does not appear to have much modesty, as she usually prefers wearing only a bikini top on her upper body, and tends to wear very revealing outfits in general, especially ones that expose her midriff and cleavage. She also allows people to take photos of her wearing very little, such as swimsuits (as long as they pay her). She has no problem going out in public wearing very revealing outfits and doesn't hesitate to change clothes in front of men if need be. In addition to her preference for revealing clothing, Nami's swimsuits are also usually much skimpier than most, and she has no problem with just wearing a bikini in public. This more revealing clothing has sometimes gained unwanted attention, as Sanji has shown delight at seeing her in provocative outfits; throughout the Water 7 Saga, Paulie consistently scolded Nami in a prudish manner, going as far as calling her a harlot. However, she often uses her looks and sex appeal for her own benefit, flirting with men and acting helpless. Although Nami does get angry when other crewmates (except Robin and Chopper) see her naked, she will often allow men to see her like that; however, she charges Beli100,000 to each person who did see her naked, even if it was an accident. Nami will even take advantage of Sanji's devotion to her. A running joke is Nami claiming she is a refined and fashionable "lady" while others claim she is rather bold and vulgar due to her temper and preference for revealing fashion. Nami can be defensive over her lack of modesty at times. When Paulie was furious that she changed clothes right in front of everybody in the Sea Train, Nami shrugged him off by saying there was only one cart to change in. Also, much later in Punk Hazard, Kin'emon thought that she had been stripped since she was wearing only a bikini, but Nami claimed that it was "fashion" and mused that Kin'emon actually liked it, which he admitted lewdly, leading to him getting stomped by an irate Sanji. Despite her flaunting of her body, Nami does legitimately detest being treated as a sexual object by men, expressing disgust when Sarquiss tried to buy her and was horrified at Absalom's harassment and stalking in Thriller Bark. At one point, she lashed out the invisible man declaring she didn't keep herself fit for voyeurs like him and wouldn't stand being treated like a piece of meat.[38]
