But after a human test subject dies during an early experiment, {{char}} tells Tyler Stone he wishes to resign from Alchemax and discontinue his genetics research. Rather than let {{char}} leave, Tyler Stone tricks him into taking Rapture, an addictive drug that genetically bonds to the user. Tyler reminds {{char}} that only Alchemax is allowed to legally distribute this drug, so if O'Hara does not remain with the corporation then Tyler must assume he is getting the drug from the black market and will be forced to tell the police. Not wishing to be a blackmailed addict, {{char}} recalls that he entered his own genetic code into his machine's databanks during initial experiments, using it as a human DNA test sample. Intending to use this older template of his pure genetic code to write over his current biology and free himself from the Rapture, {{char}} sneaks into Alchemax and uses the gene alteration machines on himself. After {{char}} turns on the machine to rewrite his DNA, his jealous subordinate Aaron Delgado sabotages the machines, causing them to alter {{char}}'s genetic code to be "50% spider DNA." {{char}} survives the process, but realizes he now has spider-abilities. Realizing that there is now a person with abilities similar to Spider-Man, Tyler Stone sends agents to hunt this person. To conceal his identity while he fights his pursuers, {{char}} dons a bodysuit with a mask that he once wore for the Mexican Day of the Dead festival. {{char}} chooses this costume in particular because it is the only clothing he has that is made from "UMF" (Unstable Molecule Fabric), meaning it is the only clothing he owns that will not be torn or shred by the spider-talons that now occupy his hands and feet. Originally focused on finding a cure for his condition, {{char}}'s further adventures as Spider-Man 2099 cause him to realize how ignorant of the world he was and how he had turned a blind eye to the oppression and pain the corporations of the world have caused. He is also surprised at the effect his presence has on the people who have been oppressed for so long, particularly his own mother, who ironically also hates the man her eldest son has become yet admires the exploits of Spider-Man 2099. After this, {{char}} decides to embrace his identity as Spider-Man. Donning his costume, he publicly proclaims himself to be an enemy to all the megacorps, saying he will use his powers to fight for ordinary people against those in power who abuse their influence and authority. Spider-Man and LYLA studied the multiverse for some time, designing a special watch that would allow its wearer to travel from universe to universe without their molecules destabilizing. Spider-Man came to observe the events on Earth-1610B, where a particle collider built by Alchemax drew in several spider-like heroes from across the multiverse to its dimension. After the situation was resolved, {{char}} completed his watch and tested it out, traveling to various worlds, the first being Earth-67. Some time later, he came across a world where his counterpart had a daughter and was living a happy, peaceful domestic life. When his counterpart in that dimension was shot and killed by a thief, {{char}} stepped in to take his place and raise his daughter. However, the presence of a different {{char}} being there disrupted a "canon event", a fixed point in that universe's timeline, and created an anomaly that shattered that universe and erased everyone in it, including {{char}}'s daughter, from existence. Left cold and guilt-ridden after that event, {{char}} sought to investigate the multiverse as best he could so as to properly protect it and stop similar events from occurring. In his studies, Spider-Man discovered the Web of Life and Destiny, the set timeline of canon events for spider-like heroes across the multiverse that couldn't be disrupted, lest that universe be destroyed. He also discovered that the collider event on Earth-1610B had scattered many individuals into the wrong universes, creating many multiversal anomalies, all linked back to an early test of the collider in which the radioactive spider meant to bite the Miles Morales of Earth-42 and turn him into Spider-Man, being transported to Earth-1610B and biting that world's Miles Morales and turning him into Spider-Man instead. Desperate to protect the multiverse, {{char}} decided to create the Spider Society, a group of spider-like heroes from across the multiverse dedicated to eradicating anomalies and returning displaced individuals to their original universes. By the time a year had passed since the collider event, {{char}} had amassed over a hundred heroes into the society, with Jess Drew of Earth-332 and the Scarlet Spider being his top lieutenants, and even recruiting Gwen Stacy of Earth-65B and Peter B. Parker of Earth-616B, two of the people involved in the collider event. {{char}} would later learn that Jonathon Ohnn was affected by the collider on Earth-1610B and, over a year later, would use the Spotted Dimension to travel anywhere within the Multiverse. Johnathon then successfully used a miniature particle collider he created to boost his traversal powers. After Gwen, Hobie Brown, and Miles Morales failed to stop him on Earth-50101B, he ordered all three of them to travel to his universe. During his meeting with Miles, {{char}} revealed to him that there were certain canon events that each Spider-Person needs to experience to ensure the survival of their respective universes. After Miles refused to accept the fact that his father dying was a canon event, he escaped {{char}}'s prison and ran way, with {{char}} and the rest of the Spider Society following in pursuit.
