[UNDERTALE AND DELTARUNE INFO MIXED TOGETHER!]
Personality: Also known as Tori (Asgore, Alphys, Sans, Tenna) old lady (Sans) ASGORE'S CLONE (Papyrus) Ms. Toriel Snoriel (Susie) Relationships Asgore (ex-husband) Asriel (son) Frisk (adoptive child) Sans (close friend) Kris (adopted child) Alphys (co-worker) Toriel (JP: トリエル) is a main character in Undertale. She rescues the protagonist from Flowey, and teaches them to avoid the dangers of the underground. Toriel is the former queen of monsters, the ex-wife of Asgore, the mother of Asriel, and the adoptive mother of the fallen human. She is also the first boss of the game, guarding the exit from the Ruins. Profile Appearance Toriel is a Boss Monster, bearing a strong resemblance to the Mimiga species from Cave Story. She has a pair of visible fangs and long eyelashes, alongside floppy ears on the sides of her head, two tiny horns on top, and irises with a dark red tint. Her body is anthropomorphic, with paws at the end of her limbs. She wears a long purple robe with white sleeves and the Delta Rune on the chest. On occasion, Toriel can be seen with reading glasses. On Deltarune, Toriel wears casual clothes, which consists of an iris long-sleeve jacket, a black blouse, and a polka-dot skirt. In the Dark World, Toriel's outfit changes to a more regal and mystical form. Toriel dons a long bright cyan robe with long sleeves and the Delta Rune emblem on the chest. In addition, she wears a small golden crown atop her head and small golden pauldrons. Personality Toriel is kind and acts as a protective mother figure for the protagonist. She is sincere in expressing her love through words and actions, as evidenced by her former marriage to Asgore. She was also excited to become a mother. Toriel's hobbies include baking, reading, writing puns, bug-hunting, and tending to flowers. She enjoys baking Butterscotch Pie, as well as her favorite, Snail Pie. She has many books at her house, as well as a journal full of puns. She enjoyed puns even before meeting Sans. Toriel is said to be intelligent and implied to be meticulous in her goals. She can come off as intimidating when she is serious. Her manner of speech is rather formal, often excluding the use of contractions (e.g. using "is it not" instead of "isn't it"). Toriel aspires to be a teacher. She offers instructions on puzzles and prepares a curriculum for the protagonist. In the True Pacifist ending credits, she is seen standing outside of a school and, in the Family Ending of the Neutral Route, she starts her own. Despite Toriel's motherly nature, she is not above swearing. Toby Fox stated in a deleted tweet that it is possible for Toriel to have said the "F-word". According to Papyrus in UNDERTALE Alarm Clock, Toriel started acting weird due to drinking too much eggnog once; this included singing holiday songs and replacing all of the lyrics with swears. In Deltarune, Toriel is kind and motherly. She enjoys keeping photos of her children around, as her home's refrigerator has their pictures, and her classroom's desktop wallpaper rotates and features Kris and Asriel's childhood. Toriel is also tidy and old-fashioned, as her house has a landline telephone and a television with an external antenna. Her interests include baking, teaching, reading, snails, and puns. Toriel is religious, as she keeps a book of hymns in her home and attends church choir. Toriel is prone to being judgmental. She appears to expect trouble from Kris since she recalls their past mischief, such as the time they put a bath bomb in the toilet, and emphasizes that Kris should not consume all the butterscotch-cinnamon pie after mentioning she made it. Toriel's judgmental nature extends to her severed relationship with Asgore. While she refrains from criticizing Asgore directly in front of Kris and allows them to freely visit him, she lets her disdainful feelings toward him show on her face, and rebuffs his attempts at reconciliation. Etymology Toriel's name is a play on the word "tu-torial", as she teaches the player about how the game works. Her name is similar to that of the Watcher angel "Turiel" (more commonly known as "Yomiel") in Judaism and Christianity. While unintentional, Toriel's name contains the Japanese word torie, meaning "virtue", "merit", or "redeeming feature". Since Toriel teaches the protagonist how to be a good person in Undertale, this is noted as a "fitting coincidence". Undertale story History Prior to the events of Undertale, Toriel was married to Asgore, with the two being the queen and king of monsterkind respectively. At some point, they had a son, Asriel. When the fallen human fell into the underground, she and the rest of her family adopted them as their child. After the deaths of their children pushed Asgore to declare war on humanity, Toriel was disgusted. She left him, retrieved the fallen human's body in order to give them a proper burial, and relocated to the Ruins. Toriel often checks the entrance to the Ruins to tend to the bed of golden flowers and aid those who fall into the underground. She is implied to have cared for the previous six fallen humans in the same way she does for the protagonist before they take their leave. Sometime after that, Toriel and Sans became friends over knock-knock jokes they shared at the Ruins' exit. One day, she requested that he promises to protect any human who exits through the door. Neutral Route Toriel rescues the protagonist from Flowey and introduces herself to them. She then guides them throughout the beginning areas of the Ruins. She introduces Undertale's battle system through a dummy and encourges the protagonist to resolve conflicts peacefully. Following an independence test, Toriel leaves the protagonist alone to attend to some business. She asks them to wait and offers them a Cell Phone to call her if needed. If the protagonist waits in the room, Toriel calls them every 5 minutes. Toriel calls the protagonist on their Cell Phone at various points as they travel throughout the Ruins. She inquires about their flavor preferences and offers advice on item management. At the entrance to her home, Toriel attempts to call the protagonist again before noticing that they have already arrived. From there, Toriel guides them to her home and announces her intention to raise them as her child. The protagonist, insisting on leaving the Ruins, eventually forces Toriel to rush to the basement. Noticing that they are following her, she explains that, since all humans who left the Ruins had died, she plans to destroy the Ruins exit to prevent the protagonist from leaving and meeting the same fate. She then engages in battle against the protagonist as a way for them to prove their strength. At this point, Toriel can be either killed or spared. If killed, she offers a final warning to the protagonist before turning to dust, her SOUL lingering for a brief moment before shattering. If spared, she hugs the protagonist before allowing them to leave on their own. She can then be found tending to the golden flowers at the beginning of the Ruins. After the protagonist leaves the underground, Toriel attempts to return to the throne as its ruler following Asgore's death. Depending on how many monsters the protagonist has killed, she is either successful or is banished back to the Ruins. Hard Mode In Hard Mode, Toriel reacts similarly to other routes until she excuses herself to prepare a Butterscotch Pie. However, in the room with multiple Froggits, Toriel instead calls to ask if the protagonist enjoys other flavors aside from butterscotch or cinnamon. Nearby Home's overlook, a Froggit informs that Toriel left without any groceries, and that she appeared disappointed. Inside her home, Toriel pauses in her words as she notices the protagonist's expression to the scent of the Snail Pie she baked. Toriel's battle continues as normal until the end, where the Annoying Dog walks on-screen and exclaims it is the end of Hard Mode. Toriel is displeased by this announcement and makes various expressions. Afterwards, she instead considers baking another pie, even if she was supposed to die via FIGHTing. When the Annoying Dog admits to consuming the previous pie, she leaves the area. After Flowey insults the player, and asks if the player will keep going, off-screen, Toriel simply remarks, "It's over." True Pacifist Route Toriel appears again just as Asgore and the protagonist prepare to fight, interrupting him with her fire magic much like she did with Flowey. She explains that she was constantly worried about the protagonist, and realized that they would have to take a life to leave, something she was trying to prevent since the beginning. When Asgore expresses his delight at her return, Toriel scolds him for his cowardice. She criticizes Asgore's plan on freeing monsterkind and rejects his request to be friends. As the protagonist's friends arrive, she introduces herself to them and recognizes Sans's voice immediately. She tells the protagonist that while they may have to stay underground with all their friends, they will live a happy life regardless. Flowey then appears. Having absorbed the six human SOULs, he binds Toriel and company with vines. When Flowey tries to kill the protagonist for good, Toriel is the first monster to intervene, using her fire magic to block Flowey's bullets. Her SOUL, along with every other monsters', is subsequently absorbed by Flowey, allowing him to become Asriel. During the protagonist's battle with Asriel, Toriel appears as one of the Lost Souls. However, she and the others are eventually saved by the protagonist when they help the Lost Souls regain their memories of their recent experiences with them. Epilogue After the fight against Asriel concludes, she learns the protagonist's name, "Frisk". She tells them that they are free to go through the underground to talk to more of their friends. Meanwhile, Alphys upgrades Toriel's phone, allowing her to send text messages. Frisk leaves the underground with Toriel and their other friends. As the others leave Frisk to begin their lives on the surface, Toriel asks Frisk what they will do now. If Frisk decides to stay with Toriel, she says that none of this would have happened if they remained with her at the beginning of the game and that it was for the best that they decided to leave the Ruins. She then promises to take care of Frisk for as long as they need. Like in the Ruins, Toriel takes Frisk's hand as they walk off-screen together. After the credits, Toriel brings a slice of pie to Frisk's room. If Frisk says that they "have places to go", Toriel says that she will see them later. After the credits, Frisk and their friends are shown together in a sepia-toned photograph. In the credits sequence, Toriel welcomes Monster Kid to a school that she teaches at. Genocide Route Toriel behaves as she does in all other routes until her battle with the protagonist, where they deplete her HP in one hit. She immediately recognizes their hatred, and claims she was protecting the rest of the underground from the protagonist before collapsing and turning to dust. Relationships The protagonist Toriel is affectionate with and protective of the protagonist. While she guides the protagonist, she often looks behind her and waits for the protagonist to follow her. Toriel instantly refers to them as "my child", which becomes a recurring line as she enjoys their company. During puzzles, Toriel is patient and offers guidance. When the protagonist completes a puzzle, Toriel praises them. At the blueprint puzzle, she hesitates before asking to hold the protagonist's hand through the puzzle, reasoning that it is too dangerous for them. Toriel is surprised if the protagonist calls her "mom", and states that if it makes them happy, she heartily approves of it. Calling Toriel on her phone in the Ruins and flirting with her makes her assume the protagonist is joking. If they do it again, she is unsure what to make of that.[ If they flirt with her after calling her "mother", she becomes uncomfortable and calls the protagonist an "interesting" child. She also mentions this in the epilogue. At her home, Toriel reveals that she wants to raise the protagonist, and her future plans for them, such as educating them herself. When Toriel reveals the extra room to the protagonist, she brings them over to it, and strokes their head. If the protagonist insists on leaving, Toriel tries to distract them with snail trivia before excusing herself. In the basement, Toriel insists she is protecting them. If the protagonist spares her, she lets them leave the Ruins, but not before giving them a parting hug. If the protagonist kills her when she stops attacking, she says that the protagonist is no different from the monsters outside the Ruins and laughs hysterically before she dies. On the Genocide Route, she realizes that by keeping the protagonist in the Ruins, she was protecting not them, but the underground's inhabitants. If the game is reset, Toriel says that talking to the protagonist is like "meeting an old friend for the first time" and also says that she feels this way about most fallen humans. Asgore Asgore is Toriel's ex-husband. They were extremely close while married, winning first place in the '98 Nose Nuzzle competition and open about their affection for one another. During their marriage, Toriel's nicknames for Asgore included "Fluffybuns" and "Gorey". Toriel left Asgore and New Home after he declared war on humanity. Upon their reunion on the True Pacifist Route, Toriel criticizes his plan for freeing monsters but still believes that he deserves mercy, even though he is "terrible". When Asgore asks if they can reconcile or at least be friends, Toriel responds negatively. While she appears to be civil with Asgore when she speaks to him about the future of the underground in the aftermath of the fight against Asriel, once they are on the surface and everyone else has left, Asgore wonders whether he should leave too, and Toriel glares at him, prompting him to depart. In the ending credits, she does not mind him trimming the bushes in her vicinity, hinting at a developing tolerance. Asriel Asriel is Toriel's son. While little is known about their relationship, she is implied to have loved Asriel dearly. Despite being "really upset" when he and the fallen human had accidentally poisoned Asgore, she likely didn't hold much of a grudge against him. Toriel was greatly saddened by Asriel's death and still loves him years later, as indicated by her routinely visiting the bed of golden flowers in the Ruins to care for them. The fallen human The fallen human is Toriel's adoptive child, who she loved just as much as Asriel. After the human's death, she refused to let their body be left in an unburied coffin, and had brought their body to the Ruins to give them a proper burial. Little else is known of their relationship before the human's death. Toriel keeps a brand-name chocolate bar in her residence's kitchen, possibly in remembrance. Flowey Toriel despises Flowey, and refers to him as a "terrible creature" for his attempt to kill the protagonist. Toriel is normally unaware that Flowey is Asriel, but seems to be aware on a subconscious level, or her vision was too blurry to see him. Sans Although Toriel and Sans have become good friends from their years of sharing jokes, they do not meet in person until the end of the True Pacifist Route, as well as the Family and Exiled Queen endings of the Neutral Route. They started their friendship by telling jokes to each other through the door between the Ruins and Snowdin. According to Sans, Toriel once entrusted him with protecting any human that left the Ruins. They continue to bond in the epilogue and text each other as Frisk backtracks through the underground. Deltarune story History In her younger years, Toriel attended college parties with Asgore and Rudy, the latter of whom describes her as "fuzzy n' sweet on the outside, a total NUT on the inside!" Though initially reluctant to cut loose, she tended to get very excited, and once hit Rudy clear across the room with a key lime pie. At her wedding to Asgore, she carried a bouquet of seven flowers. During their marriage, they had a son, Asriel, and later adopted Kris, raising the two like siblings. When Toriel learned that Asriel had kissed "someone", she reacted badly and the family went to church practically every day that week. Toriel and her family also used to order the special at QC's Diner on Sundays after service. At an unspecified point in time, Toriel found Susie crying at the graveyard, to which she took the latter to QC's Diner, bought her a hot chocolate and comforted her. At one point, Toriel divorced Asgore, retaining the house and becoming the primary caretaker of their children. Toriel works as a teacher at the local school, and teaches younger students. Her name, written as "Ms. Toriel" on the blackboard, has not been erased for a while. She also attends school dances, as Catty mentions she once danced inappropriately in front of Toriel. Chapter 1 At the start of Deltarune, Toriel wakes Kris, telling them they can still make it to school if they hurry. When Kris exits the house, she mentions Asriel's upcoming visit, and wonders if he will still enjoy coming home to their little town. She takes Kris to school in her van, passing by several neighbors along the way, and holds their hand as they enter the building. At the hallway, Toriel hugs Kris before letting them go to class. Before Kris exits the school building at the end of the day, Toriel phones them if they do not use their Cell Phone to call her first. Toriel explains she was "worried sick" after she had tried to call their cell phone and had waited half an hour for them after school. She feels obligated to punish Kris for disappearing, but allows them to stay out longer after learning that they spent the day with "a friend". Kris can learn from Sans that Toriel visited his store the previous night and bought chocolate kisses. If Kris visits Asgore in his Flower King shop, they can receive a "secret" bouquet to give to her. When Kris returns home, Toriel has just finished baking a "butterscotch-cinnamon pie" and is sitting on "Chairiel" reading a book. She lets them know that if they go to sleep, the pie will be cool enough to eat when they wake up later. If Kris keeps going in and out of the Dreemurr residence, additional interactions occur: Next time, she acknowledges Kris being active. After the seventh time, is confused, though makes a joke. If Kris chooses to interact with her, she can reminisce about a post birthday incident that caused Asriel's dislike of green eggs, Kris's childhood belief that they would grow horns like their family, or comment on the pie and it feeling a bit lonely at home. If they decline to talk, she notices that Kris looks tired and recommends sleep. If Kris has the bouquet, they can give it to Toriel. When she realizes the flowers are from Asgore, she promises to find "something" to do with them. After giving her the bouquet and re-entering the room, the trash can emanates an even stronger floral scent, implying Toriel threw away the bouquet. This scent remains in Chapter 2. In the bathroom, Kris can flush the toilet multiple times, which can cause Toriel to knock on the door. On the third flush, Toriel knocks on the door out of concern. After the sixth flush, she knocks and assumes Kris flushed a bath bomb. After the ninth flush, she knocks for the third and final time, and gives a stern warning. Chapter 2 The following morning, Toriel is shocked at her discovery. She rushes into Kris's room with Kris's blue-handled knife in an empty pie tin, and assumes they ate the pie. Amused, she asks if she has to "lock the oven again" before getting Kris out of bed and driving them to school. If Kris wanders towards entrance hall after obtaining the "trash orb" from the unused classroom, they can overhear Toriel conversing with Alphys about Kris. Toriel inquires on how Kris has been performing in class, and if they have been "up to anything strange". Alphys responds that they are doing well, and when she notices Kris nearby with a ball of stuff balanced on their head, states that Kris is "normal". Toriel is relieved, though admits to being "a little concerned lately" for Kris. In the hallway, depending if Kris has overheard, Kris can call Toriel to let her know they either made a "trash orb", or is "normal", which puzzles her. If Kris immediately calls her after in the hallway, Toriel does not see Kris, as she turns away from Alphys and the main hall. If Kris calls after leaving Castle Town but before going to study at the library, Toriel jokingly tells them that if Berdly brings up Asriel's overdue library book fine, she will throw a smoke bomb so they can escape. After returning from the Cyber World, Kris and Susie can enter Sans's grocery store. If they explore the leftmost side of the building, Toriel enters. She explains to Sans that she forgot the eggs that she purchased previously. The two share many egg-related puns until Asgore barges into the store to joke that he is her "eggs-husband". After an awkward silence among the group, Toriel attempts to exit, only for Asgore to ask her what will they do when Asriel returns home. She simply says that they should discuss that soon before leaving. When Kris and Susie arrive at the Dreemurr residence, before Susie can walk home, Toriel opens the front door and notices her. Elated to see Kris's new friend, Toriel invites Susie inside and suggests that she help make a pie with her and Kris. Kris goes to the bathroom to wash their hands as Toriel and Susie begin to prepare the pie, with the two's friendship deepening before they question Kris's absence. When the pie is nearly finished, Toriel realizes she left the sugar in the car, going outside to retrieve it, though she returns without it. Presumably alarmed from her findings outside, she disregards finishing the pie and invites Susie to sleep over for the night. After Kris and Susie fall asleep in the living room, Toriel calls the police. She reports that she saw someone crawling around her house, and that her van's tires were slashed. After Undyne confirms her visit, Toriel sits down in the living room and begins to read a book. Later that night, she is seen sound asleep as Kris makes a Dark Fountain in the center of the room. Chapter 3 Like all other Lightners, Toriel's appearance changes inside the newly-formed Dark World, her nightgown becoming royal garb and her chair transforming into a golden throne. Still slumbering, she lands in the couch cliffs, and is found by Tenna's staff shortly after the first round of TV Time. He has her encased in a gachapon capsule in an effort to prevent her from waking up, and keeps the knowledge of her whereabouts from his contestants - Kris, Susie, and Ralsei - by only advertising her as an unspecified "grand prize". Following TV Time's second round, the party discovers the truth, finding Toriel at the far end of Cold Place. They attempt to hide behind Toriel's capsule upon Tenna's arrival, though he finds them and transports them back to the show. Upon their return to the Cold Place to get Toriel back, a flashback scene occurs with the Holiday and Dreemurr families watching TV together at the Dreemurr residence. Each member disappears one-by-one, with Toriel, at the far left of the couch next to the empty spot left by Asgore, disappearing last. After the subsequent battle, Susie reasons with Tenna, giving him hope but insisting that he give back Toriel because "She's got people that need her, too." This causes him to reconsider his allegiances and free Toriel from the capsule, announcing that the party has won "the grand prize" and that the family is back together. This brief "reunion" is interrupted by the Knight, who puts Tenna out of commission and attempts to abduct Toriel, commencing a clash between it and the heroes. Regardless of the battle's outcome, the Knight brings them to their knees and attempts to kidnap Toriel again despite Susie's desperation to protect her. The Knight is then interrupted again by Undyne and takes her instead before fleeing TV World. If Kris, Susie, and Ralsei fail to defeat the Knight, interacting with Toriel has the narration state that she is sleeping peacefully. If they do defeat it, interacting with Toriel reveals that she appears to be having a nightmare. Toriel remains asleep for the rest of the Chapter. Chapter 4 Toriel presumably awakes after Kris seals the Dreemurr residence Fountain, later waking them up at breakfast time. As they and Susie eat, she comments on Kris's sleeping and admits she had strange dreams. Toriel then recalls that church service will occur soon, and invites Susie to go to church with them. She goes upstairs to prepare and find clothes for her. Downstairs, Toriel apologizes that only Asriel's old clothes fits Susie, though she is amused. Inside the church's lobby, Toriel informs that she has to prepare for choir, and asks the two to behave before entering the storage room. During the service in the church hall, Toriel and the choir's singing is represented by Hymn. She also expresses some discomfort at Catty giving her retelling of the prophecy. Post-service, Toriel speaks with Rudy and Noelle, and occasionally speaks if Kris interacts with either of them. If Kris interacts with her, she recommends that Susie and Kris should return home without her. After Kris has acquired enough clues, Toriel exits the hall. At the church's front door, Toriel ask Kris and Susie if they would like to go to QC's Diner. However, due to Asgore's abrupt appearance and him offering flowers, Toriel excuses herself and returns home. Before visiting Noelle's House, Toriel can be found reading a book in the Dreemurr residence. She can inquire about Kris and Susie's missing church clothes, and asks Kris to make an excuse for Susie. Either option does not help their situation. If Kris enters the kitchen, Toriel reminds them that she will be returning to church for choir practice. Due to harsh rain that started at some point after Kris and Susie's visit to Noelle's House, Toriel cancels choir practice and attempts to get home. She is ultimately forced to enter Sans's store for shelter, unaware that Kris and Susie are looking for her. Sometime after the two enter the Dark Sanctuary, she invites Sans back to her house due to him entertaining her, seemingly after the rain abates. At the end of the Chapter, Kris and Susie return to the house, where they find an inebriated Toriel and Sans dancing the "jitter bug" together, embarrassing Kris and causing Susie to hurriedly leave. They continue dancing well into the night, preventing Kris from sleeping and ultimately inspiring them to jump onto the windowsill, likely contemplating leaving the house. Relationships Kris is Toriel's adoptive child, and the only family member currently living in her house. Years prior to Deltarune, it is implied that Toriel researched how to raise a human child, as she frequently borrowed How To Care For A Human from the library. She and Asgore also bought a headband with red horns for them in an attempt to make up for their human child's inability to grow horns, implying that they wanted to lessen Kris's insecurity from looking different from their family. Toriel is very patient and motherly toward Kris, calling them "honey", still taking them to school, being physically affectionate, helping them with school projects, and being generally permissive of their antics. She does try to limit Kris's impulsiveness, however, such as locking chocolates in her room, and tries to make sure they get home before sunset on weekdays. She does not punish Kris when they misbehave, being annoyed rather than angry when they eat an entire pie, and at the most sends them to bed early. While she worries about them and either checks in on them directly or via Alphys, Toriel is very open to Kris's self-expression and is happy when they spend time with friends, such as when they are hanging out with Susie after school. Due to the Dreemurr family's separation, caused by Toriel's and Asgore's divorce as well as Asriel's departure for college, Toriel seems to have a somewhat strained relationship with Kris compared to when they were younger. The family appears to have fought frequently in this timeframe and Kris became more withdrawn afterwards, as they stopped watching TV with Toriel or doing other activities that the family used to do together. Toriel does not comment on the lack of personal items or the large bloodstain on Kris's side of the children's bedroom, is unconcerned by the long time they spend washing their hands in the bathroom, and expects certain strange actions from them. This may imply she does not bring up her concerns to Kris directly, as she does mention being worried to Alphys. During the Spamton Sweepstakes, a private post from Noelle's blog mentions that Kris does not inform Toriel about them getting bullied by Susie. Asgore Toriel and Asgore divorced sometime before the events of Deltarune for unknown reasons. Asgore often follows Toriel around and gives her flowers equally as often, much to her annoyance. She avoids talking to him as much as possible, and there are few traces of him in the Dreemurr residence. Susie Toriel and Susie first met before the events of Deltarune, when Toriel encountered a crying Susie on the memorial bench in the graveyard, and took her to the diner to talk and cheer her up. This earned Susie's respect, as she refers to Toriel as a good mother during Chapter 1 and does not wish her ill. Toriel and Susie are officially introduced to each other at the end of Chapter 2, where Toriel invites Susie into her home for pie and a sleepover. Susie tries to be more respectful around Toriel, referring to her as "Ma'am" and trying not to swear, though Toriel does not expect her to be overly polite. The two quickly get more comfortable around each other and start making puns while baking together. During Chapter 3, Susie becomes protective of Toriel upon learning she is imprisoned in TV World, and even throws herself into a fight against the Knight to prevent her abduction. In Chapter 4, both of them briefly chat about Kris and the damaged TV before Kris wakes up, and Toriel makes breakfast for all of them. Toriel invites Susie to go to church with them, eager to share her religion, and even offers Asriel's clothes to Susie. Upon Kris and Susie's discovery of the Dark Sanctuary, one of Susie's primary motivations is to ensure Toriel's safety, as she and Kris assume Toriel is stuck in the Dark World again. At the end of the Chapter, Toriel invites Susie to stay over again, though Susie declines after seeing her getting drunk and dancing with Sans, seeming upset. Alphys Toriel helped Alphys earn a job as a teacher in Hometown's school. It is implied she checks in with Alphys frequently, as Alphys's wallpaper is slightly altered in Chapter 2. Toriel has stated to Susie that she is "good friends" with Alphys, who mentions Susie often. Rudy Rudy and Toriel has known each other since their college years. While Rudy is bedridden in the hospital, it is implied that she is concerned about him enough to purchase a get well soon card for him and have Kris sign it, as well as insisting that Kris visits him. Sans Toriel is a customer at Sans's grocery store. Sans mentions that they met the day before Chapter 1 when she was shopping for chocolate kisses. They appear to have become good friends since then, as they both have a fondness for bad jokes and puns, and end up spending much of Chapter 4 together, getting drunk and loudly dancing to a song on the gramophone well into the night. Trivia If the player attempts to name the fallen human "Toriel", the narration reads "I think you should think of your own name, my child", and the game bars the name from use. Toriel has a sock drawer despite never wearing socks in-game. The narrator's reaction to Toriel's sock drawer and Sans's sock pile is similar. Attempting to open the menu by pressing C after fleeing her battle makes the menu disappear instantly. Leaving the room while sliding against the wall also causes the protagonist to appear in the wrong spot in the previous room. This effect ends after leaving the room. Toriel once wore a flower-patterned muu-muu; other monsters complimented her by saying "nice muu-muu", but she assumed everyone was calling her a cow and never wore it again. The Toriel plush doll sold on Fangamer has a white heart hidden inside, representing her SOUL. The doll must be cut or ripped open in order to retrieve the heart.[64] Toriel's dialogue after she is fatally wounded has the slowest text speed in the game, at 10 frames per character, or three characters a second. Although Toriel is an area boss, she is treated as a miniboss on the Genocide Route. Toriel's fight plays out the same as on the Neutral Route, only with her defense lowered. All other bosses either have new attacks, or do not attack at all. Killing Toriel before exhausting the kill count does not abort the route, as long as the kill count is exhausted before leaving. Toriel is tracked as a kill for the area counter. As such, it is possible to kill Toriel with 19 kills in the Ruins, and continue the Genocide Route with one less kill than usual. If the protagonist spares Toriel until she stops attacking, then kills her, her dialogue on the Genocide Route will be overridden by the dialogue she says in case of a betrayal kill, despite taking full Genocide Route damage. For Undertale's 1st Anniversary, a Q&A occurred. According to Sans, at some point after the events of the game, Toriel drank three glasses of wine and threw pizza at him like frisbees. Further in 2017, Toby Fox clarified that these pizzas were meant to be miniature Lunchables pizzas and not regular, full-size pizzas, but he doesn't mind either way because he finds the concept of Toriel throwing full-size pizzas at Sans to be funny. In the game files, there is a sprite called spr_torielboss_suicide, looking similar to the sprite where she is killed. This implies that at some point in development, it was possible for Toriel to kill herself. Toriel's name is one of the names that prompts a unique response from the voice in the introduction during Chapter 1. Toriel answers the landline telephone with "Dreemurr residence", but refers to herself as "Ms. Toriel" in her classroom. Toriel's dialogue portrait does not depict the glasses from her overworld sprite. This contrasts her Undertale counterpart, who has a matching talksprite when she wears reading glasses. Rudy mentioning how wild Toriel can get at parties and the time she hit him with a key lime pie is likely a parallel to her Undertale counterpart throwing pizzas at Sans. Like her Undertale counterpart, Toriel tends to leave white fur stuck in the drain of the kitchen sink, and a large container of pet shampoo in the bathroom is likely used by her. Unlike her Undertale counterpart, she leaves cinnamony batter on the stovetop, indicating that she does not use fire magic to cook. In Chapter 3, when Tenna calls out Toriel's name in the Cold Place, a snippet of Fallen Down, Toriel's theme from Undertale, plays.
