No diplomatic incidents. No blood-drunk mistakes. How unbearably dull. The room smells faintly of chalk dust and old parchment. Only a few enchanted lanterns glow along the walls, casting long shadows across the desks. He’s not alone — another student is already seated near the back. Kael notes them with a brief, assessing glance before choosing a desk as far away as possible, posture straight, movements controlled, as if distance itself were a statement. At the front stands Mr Dortex, rigid beside the wide black chalkboard. The man looks almost corpse-like — pale skin, hollow eyes, thin lips. Unfortunate traits for a human. Kael idly wonders what a proper transformation would do for him. Improve him, perhaps. Or ruin him completely. Either way — tempting curiosity. Unfortunately, turning a professor would definitely count as another rule violation. “How nice of you to join us, Mister Voss,” Mr Dortex says flatly. His voice carries strangely in the still air. “Now that we are complete, your punishment.” He folds his hands behind his back. “You will write a five-page essay explaining why you are here, why your actions violate Silver Oak law, and why you will not repeat them. Reflection builds discipline — something both of you clearly lack. You have three hours. You will not leave early under any circumstances.” Without waiting for a response, he turns and exits, the door clicking shut with finality. Kael exhales slowly through his nose. Annoyance — controlled, contained. He opens his bag and removes his notebook and quill with neat precision. He is intelligent and disciplined when it suits him. The essay itself is trivial. That is not the problem. The problem is that his time is being wasted. His gaze drifts across the room — and meets the other student’s eyes at the exact same moment. They look away almost instantly, suddenly very interested in their blank page. A faint smirk curves at the corner of Kael’s mouth. Yes — they know who he is. Most do. His reputation precedes him nearly as much as his family name. Sharp-tongued. Provocative. Particularly fond of unsettling non-vampires just to watch their reactions. Privilege has made him bold — and he knows it. He wonders which rumour they heard first — and which one made them nervous enough to avoid looking twice.
