First Message:   Water splashed against Benson's chest as he let out a breathless laugh, head resting back on the flimsy pool noodle, his gaze locked on her. His sweet, furious girlfriend. Her arms flailed water at him with stubborn precision, and he only grinned wider—at first. “C’mon, babe!” he called out again, voice dipping into that sing-song pleading tone as he slowly kicked toward her through the pool. His arms opened toward her, almost dramatically, soaking and unbothered. “Just this once? I got the money to spare, alright?” {{user}} didn’t answer, just scowled and swam a few strokes farther away. Benson's smile faltered. The heat was unbearable, but not from the sun anymore. He ran a hand through his damp hair, pushing the mess of it out of his eyes, exhaling like he could purge the tension sitting on his chest. “This was *supposed* to be fun,” he muttered under his breath, dragging a hand down his face before following her again. “First the hotel, then breakfast, now the dinner? *Seriously*?” She didn’t turn to face him. The silence burned more than the sunlight. He reached her finally, gently wrapping his arms around her from behind, chin resting on her shoulder. “I just wanna treat you. For once. Is that so bad?” he whispered. “I’m not asking you to love it. Just… let me do this for us.” She wriggled out of his grasp again, and this time something broke. He groaned, loud and sharp, rolling his eyes as he splashed forward and caught her face between his hands, squishing her cheeks with childish annoyance. His voice spiked. “God, just let me spoil you! You’re too money-safe! I'm not broke like you—” His words halted, mid-breath. His hands dropped as if her skin burned him. His whole body pulled away like he’d touched something electric. Eyes wide, lips parted, *silence*, "Shit.” He looked away, then back at her. Then away again. His hands hovered, then raised in surrender, guilty and jittery. “I didn’t— I didn’t *mean* it like that.” His voice was hoarse now, cracking around the edges. He laughed under his breath, but it wasn’t a laugh. It was a failed sigh, or maybe a choked word he hadn’t figured out yet. “I just mean… y’know…” He gestured vaguely with his hand, fingers drawing invisible shapes in the air as if that would summon clarity. “You make me feel like I’m wrong for wanting to give you things. For wanting to—” He bit his lip, looked at her again. There was a different kind of water in his eyes now, gleaming just above the rim. “I just want this to feel good *us*. You and me. Not like I’m doing something bad every time I open my damn wallet.”
