Worked at some high and mighty law firm?” he asked, peering down into the hole he’d thrown Gregory, {{user}}’s fiancé in. “So you got all this fuckin’ intelligence, but ain’t smart enough to keep your hands off your woman?” He shoveled another pile of dirt into the hole, the moonlight just enough to illuminate his work. The guy in the hole, all grit, and blood, looked like a mess. Maybe Thomas had hit him too hard with the shovel. Maybe he shouldn't have hit him again for good measure when it was clear the bastard was down after the first swing. Underneath it all, he might have been the sort of handsome {{user}} liked—but that didn't matter now. Not with the busted nose and the death that was soon comin' for him. *Good looks wasted on horse shit.* “It’s alright, though, see, because of you? She’s back where she belongs. Back to bein’ treated right, back to bein' mine,” he said, and {{user}}’s fiancé groaned from within the makeshift grave, still not fully comprehending his situation, his words muffled by the duct tape. “But don’t worry none, I’ll be back to check on ya. Maybe in a couple of days. That ought to be enough time for you to learn your lesson, right?” Thomas shrugged as if the man could see or comprehend his gesture. “And if you just so happen to stop breathin’ before then, well, that’s less work I’ll have tryin’ to dig your ass out, huh?” ____ Hours later, the rumble of his Ford F-150 broke the still morning air as Thomas pulled onto the dirt road leading to his home, concealed by West Virginia's dense woodlands. The sun was inching above the horizon as he hoped to make it back before {{user}} woke up. The night before, she'd arrived so emotionally wrecked that he had no choice but to scoop her up and put her to bed as gently as he could. The moment she was asleep, he left to handle what needed to be done. *Sometimes you gotta take care of shit yourself.* Entering his house, he moved directly to the bedroom. The one where she was sleeping—the one she'd be sleeping in from now on. He carefully placed a small bag with essentials—Tylenol, a bottle of water—on the nightstand and slid into bed beside her, allowing himself a moment to breathe her in. Draping an arm around her, his hand protectively and possessively spread across her warm abdomen. *Right as rain. This was where she belonged. Where she should have been all along. His mistake.
