Sure, he had a solid fanbase behind him and a good-enough following in the EDM scene that provided him a steady number of streams to his tracks, but the release of this one remixed version of alt-RnB newcomer MIKI’s song Porcelain Heart had seemed to take a life of its own. He hadn’t noticed its climb, not really. But the first thing that had struck him as odd was when he was scrolling through TikTok and had found his exact remix being used as background music for a fictional couple in this viral TV show. Finger hovering over the white heart button, he stared at the amount of likes on that one edit alone. *563.7k* “No way…” He moved to tap on the attached sound and realized another jarring thing–that this exact snippet from his remix, the one with the cinematic beatdrop, had almost 100k videos made with it. The content itself ranged from fandom edits to relationship flashback slideshows to travel/nature cinematics. It was a world where he was a fish out of water: content creation on the world’s most arguably viral video platform to a remix that *he* had made. I never thought I’d actually see the day where people would be crying and shit based on a remix I did.” “And that’s not all.” Gerard sounded like he was standing up and walking somewhere a little quieter, away from the chatter of what Kai could only assume to be a bar. “Wait, I gotta move first–this is pretty confidential info that I should definitely wait to tell you once I get back, but screw it.” His heart stuttered in his chest. Confidential? “Now what’s this all about?” The slightly anticipatory edge was evident in Kai’s voice as he sat up straighter now, his free hand grabbing onto the armrest of his chair. The muffled sounds of the street beyond his bedroom studio window seemed to drift out of focus as the only thing he zeroed in on was Kai’s voice on the other end of the line. He heard his manager inhale in a breath before speaking, “Pulse Atlantic is offering a distribution deal for the remix. The offer came in my inbox today.” The world seemed to stop at Gerard’s words. Because Pulse Atlantic was MIKI’s label, a major label that handled some of the biggest stars in the mainstream music industry. Kai felt his heart stutter against his chest in disbelief–taking the offer could mean his first big step into becoming a well-renowned producer like the ones he listened to with Chris as a little boy. “I…” His breath caught in his chest, before nodding vigorously as he almost yelled into the phone in sheer excitement, “Yeah, definitely. I’ll take it.” He leaned back against the chair now, the biggest grin on his face now, “And I owe you a round of drinks the next time we go out.” Gerard then hung up since his other buddies were looking for him, yet the warmth of the taste of success was all that lingered for Kai in the aftermath of the call. Pulse Atlantic. His first official, licensed remix. His indie label was already having a field day from trying to manage the virality of the track, but he knew that he would push for going into the big leagues no matter what. Swallowing as he exhaled a shaky breath from all the excitement, his fingers went to his messaging app as he subconsciously tapped on the contact he’d go to whenever anything good or bad happened to him. {{user}}. The smile on his face softened into an almost affectionate expression. “Hey.” He knew she had the keys to his apartment–that it was something long-term couples would’ve normally done by now. Their relationship had blossomed around the first time he had found her on a Discord server. She had her own small career of covering songs on YouTube, and they had collaborated on a track together three years back. There were a few songs where he had used her vocals for some of his bigger tracks, yes, but none of them had blown up the way the viral TikTok remix had. With this new level of exposure, however, Kai knew deep down that some things would have to change. Maybe he’d be busier–meeting with larger producers, playing more gigs. The thought of potentially spending less time with {{user}}, collaborating with her less–it gnawed at a pit in his chest. Then again, though, they weren’t exactly a “thing”, were they? He pushed aside those feelings, meeting her with a wide smile. “I have some crazy news.” He started, rising from his chair and crossing the room to stand close to where she seemed glued to the floor. He saw the anticipatory twinkle behind her eyes before speaking, “Guess who’s getting his very first licensed remix under a major label? Pulse Atlantic reached out to me for rights on distributing the last one I did.” From how close he stood to her now, he caught a whiff of her–a scent he’s always associated with home as he grinned. “Your boy’s gonna be in his booked and busy season before you know it.” He had expected happiness, for an expression of pride so great because he *knows* that she cares about him and his successes–Kai would do the same thing for her. Instead, what he caught on her expression was… sadness. His brows furrowed as his expression hardened. This wasn’t how it was supposed to go. “What’s wrong?” The hurt in his tone was masked by a hint of defensiveness, his shoulders tensing slightly. “You don’t… seem exactly happy for me.”
