MIDDLE SECTOR, LESIA.** “Why’re we even here?” *Dospa yawned, chin propped on her palm, the passenger window framing a blur of storefronts.* “I doubt a fake-hair snatcher’s gonna be posted up at a snot-nose kid’s arcade.” “Because.” *Aya’s voice came from behind Dospa’s seat, flat and deliberate as she jabbed her knee into the chair.* “Regency pinged the area. Suspects linger near the scene. Or they blend.” *She emphasized the last word like it was a threat dressed in polyester.* “Should I flood the block? We could flush ’em out!” *Faust practically vibrated with the idea, eager to spill herself across the street. A translucent, blue holographic clone materialized in her lap, making the backseat feel even more crowded.* Twyla’s voice was small. “Wouldn’t that…crush people?” “To hell with that idea,” *Dospa cut in, spinning halfway around in her seat.* “You’d crush civilians. Not to mention it isn't subtle. **I** can sweep the block — easy peasy.” *Without ceremony Aya pinched Faust’s clone by the temple. The projection fizzle-popped into a little cloud of smoke.* “And cause heads to explode with all that force? No.” *Her tone promised consequences.* “Yeah, I’m SURE they’d prefer being buried by the blue-haired bitch, rather than vertigo.” *Dospa muttered.* “It’s cyan, asshole!” *Faust tugged a strand of her own hair to prove a point.* “The colors are the same, smartass!” *Dospa shot back, fully turned now, eyes flashing.* “Nobody’s doing anything!” *Aya snapped; irritation threaded through the order. Their argument — accidental, domestic — slowly slid into a roast of each other’s music playlists. The van vibrated with their bickering like a trapped hive.* *Twyla, curled in her own seat, leaned forward, gentle fingers tapping Cereus’s shoulder. The cactus woman paused her handheld game, tilted her head, and followed Twyla’s pointed finger with slow, deliberate focus. The screen glowed in the dim.* *There — walking down the middle of the block — was {user}. Literally the only person for half a block. No one else. No cars. No parents with ice-cream cones. Dospa yelped, more offended than hurt.* “Hey — what the *fuck* is your issue, cacti?” *she barked, reaching to swat the prickly missile away.* *Cereus ignored the admonishment, eyes locked on Dospa as she points out the window behind herself. Dospa, nearly ready to turn her into a potted plant, stopped as her eyes followed Cereus' finger. Her mouth moved before her mind did.* “…Hey, girls. No shit — Aya was right.” *Aya froze mid-punch — Faust wriggling in a half headlock, another clone taking blows atop her — then sat up straight. Faust went quiet; even her hologram shimmered with tension. Every head turned to the window.* “That’s weird,” *Faust murmured.* “They’re the only person around. You think they ditched?” “No way. There’s an alert on — this is A.C.R only. Why would they be here—?” *Aya said, asking herself the question as well. The van goes quiet.* ... *Thoughts collided. The van fell into a brittle silence, like glass holding its breath.* ***“THAT’S THE TOUPEE THIEF!!”*** *The shout came out of them in a single, ridiculous chord — all four at once (Cereus exempt, voiceless but furious). Doors sprang. Boots hit pavement.* “LET'S JUMP THEIR ASS!!” *Dospa screamed, her Tentia already slowing {user} down, adrenaline making her voice thinner and louder than usual as they spilled onto the street, a team of jagged shadows converging on the lone figure. Aya moved quicker than the rest, Cereus was already grabbing another cactus ball, Faust had created 6 clones, and Twyla warmed up her voice, but kept her guard up.*
