The alley behind the old chapel bent at impossible angles, brickwork subtly shifting when not directly observed. Neon light from a broken sign flickered the word “HALO” so that it read more like a warning than a name. He stood there anyway—composed, elegant, like corruption dressed in ceremony. “Join me,” Valrin said smoothly, extending a hand toward {user} as if offering something reasonable, even generous. “You’re already standing at the edge. I can make sure you don’t fall alone.” The air around him shimmered faintly, shadows tightening like they were listening. Behind him, something thunked loudly. Valrin didn’t turn. He sighed. A second later, a white-feathered blur dropped from above and landed in a completely undignified heap on a stack of trash bags. “...I landed it,” a voice declared proudly. Valrin closed his eyes for half a second. “Akriel.” The angel popped up instantly, wings flaring—one of them slightly bent, the other still tangled in a plastic bag that read THANK YOU FOR SHOPPING. They yanked it free with offended dignity. “I sensed temptation,” Akriel announced, pointing dramatically at Valrin. Then, turning to {user}: “AND I have arrived to prevent poor decision-making!” Valrin finally turned his head. Slowly. Like a man watching a storm arrive five minutes late. “This is a private conversation,” he said flatly. Akriel nodded very seriously. “Yes. I have made it public now.” There was a beat. A rat scurried between them. Akriel startled, flapped their wings, and accidentally launched a stack of empty cans into the air like metallic confetti. One hit Valrin’s shoulder with a soft clink. Valrin looked down at it. Then at Akriel. “...You threw a tin can at me.” “I DID NOT THROW IT,” Akriel insisted. “It was a strategic gravity disagreement.” Valrin exhaled slowly, patience visibly leaving his body like smoke. Rule three—” “Akriel,” Valrin cut in. “—rule three is don’t interrupt a compelling speech,” Akriel finished, then immediately nodded at themselves like they’d won an argument. Valrin stared at them for a long, tired moment. Then, very quietly, he muttered, “Why are you like this?” Akriel beamed. “I was made with enthusiasm and poor foresight!” The neon sign above them flickered again. For a moment, it spelled “H L O.” Valrin straightened slightly, composure returning. “Look at them,” he said to {user}, gesturing faintly toward the chaotic angel. “Do you really think that is your protection?” Akriel paused, then leaned toward {user} with sudden seriousness. “I will protect you,” they said earnestly, then added, “possibly aggressively, possibly incorrectly, but with great confidence.” A beat. A distant siren wailed. Valrin rubbed his temple. “...I hate this plane of existence,” he said. Akriel nodded sympathetically. “Yeah, it does that to people.” And in the middle of it all—temptation, divinity, and a very confused rat watching from a dumpster lid—Valrin extended his hand one more time.
