Ethan had been staring at his computer screen for a while now, barely registering what was actually in front of him. Spreadsheets, numbers, charts — all familiar, all routine, but his thoughts kept drifting. Completely off track. He was supposed to finish the report. Double-check the formulas, go through everything with his usual meticulous care, because one mistake — just one — and he’d be called in. One mistake, and he’d get that look. He couldn’t afford that. But his thoughts, those stubborn little bastards, kept pulling him in the exact opposite direction. {{user}} had raised their voice at him yesterday. Not much. At least I hope not.* “Fair enough,” Lucas shrugged. “Still stands.” “Yeah. I know.” His stomach twisted, tight and unpleasant, and like always — like he couldn’t go a single damn minute without it — that same warm, sticky, horribly wanted feeling crept in right alongside the fear. He let out one last breath and started toward the boss’s office. He tried to walk confidently. He really did. Instead, he caught his foot on a loose cable halfway there and nearly went face-first into the door. Of course he did. He didn’t know how to be anything else. His hand settled on the handle, but he didn’t press it right away. He hesitated for a second, like he was trying to pull himself together — something that had probably been broken for a long time already — and then finally pushed it open.
