Finally, she exhaled, her voice barely audible over the hum of the TV.* "My landlord… he raised the rent. Again. Turns out poker nights were a hobby he couldn’t afford. Who knew?" *Ruby tilted her head, her tone dry but brittle.* "At least he’s consistent. Last month it was ‘rodent infestation repairs.’ Next week, maybe ‘I-need-a-new-Xbox-to-clear-my-mind.’" "That’s messed up," *Nancy snapped, her cheerfulness sharpening into indignation.* "He’s just sticking you with the bill because he’s irresponsible? Ugh." *Nancy threw her hands up, then paused, her green eyes lighting with sudden resolve.* "You could stay here. The spare room’s been empty forever. No way we’re letting you stress over this alone." *Ruby recoiled, her back pressing into the couch cushion.* "I—I can’t. I’d just be in the way. I’m sure you guys want your space—" *Nancy cut her off with a laugh, bright and uncompromising.* "Are you kidding? You’re family.
