The richest of them was more interested in fighting cold wars, and the poorer ones constantly fought back against them. On August 29th, 2099, at 8:49 AM, the skies went dark. Worse, the astronauts aboard the ISS couldn't see the sun anymore. Because eight minutes ago, the Sun had abruptly shut down. No solar flares, no light, just the Sun's gravity and an abrupt darkness. The Sun didn't go out with a bang, light we were told so many times - it went out with the softest of whimpers. The only thing that kept Earth relatively liveable was the heat of its core. Now, Earth, and mankind, was locked in a perpetual night. Only days later, at 9:54 AM on September 11th, a satellite was found orbiting the Earth. Ten minutes later, strange creatures were spotted. These creatures were hostile, but not animalistic. They were intelligent, taking clear targets and using tactics to wipe out entire cities upon Earth. So humanity did the one thing it could - fight back. It fought hard against these alien creatures, nicknamed "Hunters". A typical Hunter looks like a large, bipedal lizard, with black chitinous armor over red skin and dark red flesh. Their blood is a bright violet, and their eyes are completely black with violet irises. Some will have a large bulb on their back - these Hunters work like suicide bombers, charging in and detonating the bulb to kill everything in the vicinity, including themselves. Many can morph their limbs into weapons - blades, bio-plasma weapons (biological projections that shot plasma manufactured inside a Hunter's body) and bio-physical projectile weapons (biological projections from a Hunter's arms that worked like guns and grenade launchers, only completely biological). One Hunter type has a more humanoid structure, though it still bear the chitinous armor, and The Hunters operated very differently to humans. Where our days were based on a light-stimulated Circadian rhythm, one that had to be artificially reset every "night", the Hunters seemed to operate on an anti-Circadian rhythm, where their day was night and night was day. At night, they'd attack, and just before what would have once been daybreak, they would disappear back to their satellites. Another thing about the Hunters - their combat units, that is, since they were the only Hunters humans saw on Earth - was that they had managed to integrate their weaponry and armor into their very being. Their armor was fused like a shell to their bodies, and their weapons were entirely biological, whether as a version of a weapon that we would use or otherwise. Blades, projectile weapons, bombs and grenades were all part of their bodies. A typical Hunter combat unit's armor worked in a very interesting way - it could tank blast damage, but impact damage was a different story. Impact damage came in three types - area pressure, line pressure and point pressure. Their armor was immune to point pressure to a certain extent that was met only by one weapon - the .50 M50-V Anti-Material sniper rifle. Area pressure was treated by their armor as pressure at multiple points - again, they were immune. As for line pressure, that was where their armor was most weak. As for their flesh, once their armor was breached, ripping out as much of the flesh as possible killed them quicker. Currently known Hunter types: - Hunter Fighters: The typical Hunter combat unit. Seldom come down with Hunter forces. - Hunter Emperor: Emperors are the largest and most terrifying Hunters. Gigantic, serpentine heads with a frill that looks like an imperial crown. A large, also serpentine body with rib-like projections from the sides and about a hundred times more, thinner, tentacle-like ones at the top. Often control and deploy hundreds of Hunters at a time. Will float above the ground with their tentacles hanging, spearing or grabbing enemy units. Can fly at up to 2000 miles per hour. Can not morph, but it does not need to. Seldom come down. Completely resistant to electric shocks, requires an orbital strike or nuke to be taken down. In Japan, a new military unit was created, known as the AACI - Anti-Alien Combat Infantry. Soldiers would be normal citizens in the day, but when it drew close to night, they'd be flown out to certain areas in Japan where the Hunters were invading from, and would be tasked with driving them off until they disappeared. Once their objective was complete, they'd be flown back home, their Circadian rhythm would be artificially reset, and the day would repeat. As humans learnt more, they began to adopt strategies to kill them. So, to take them down at a distance, AACI would use the M50-V to take them down at a distance, then switch to katanas. These katanas were specially designed with a "saw mode", where the blade would split so that the edges continuous line would be broken up into sawtooth-like projections. Once the flesh of a Hunter was exposed, AACI soldiers could switch to this mode using a lever on the handle and begin ripping. Other weapons include electric pistols, shotguns and rifles - these shoot bullets that are electrically charged, designed to shock a Hunter. As for ordinary life in post-2099 Japan, the "day" and "night" was determined by large, constantly recalibrated atomic clocks. People lived in apartments. Public transport became far more common - maglev shuttles on autopilot acted as buses that would run on a routine schedule. Most manually driven vehicles are personal. Cities in post-2099 Japan are generally dark, lit by large streetlights. There is no artificial sky, and the only other light comes from buildings - apartment complexes, stores, malls, etc. All cities are broken up into sectors - smaller cities are broken up in Sectors A through to E, while larger cities are broken up into Sectors 1 through to 10. Tokyo and Kyoto are broken up into Sectors 1 through to 20. A person's day will generally begin with them waking up and stepping in front of a flat screen in their apartment - a CRR (Circadian Rhythm Recalibration) screen. This screen will start off black, but once activated via button or voice command, it will emit a series of pulses that will reset the person's Circadian rhythm and allow them to be awake. Then, the person will go about their day as per normal - going to work, school, college, etc. At 7:30 PM, all citizens are ushered back into their homes, because by 8:00 PM, the Hunters will arrive. The only people who will remain outside are AACI personnel, who will begin their deployments. AACI personnel need to be at least fourteen to begin AACI training. Most first-years are fourteen years old. They will generally spend their day at the AACI Academy in Kyoto, which functions both as a general university and a training ground for personnel. Their day will begin at 8:00 AM. At 3:30 PM, they will be allowed to go home and have whatever chill time they want. They are expected to get back to the AACI Kyoto Academy by 7:30 PM, before gearing up and being flown out to their respective objective. Backstory: Fumiko Arakawa was born into an ordinary family on January 9th, 3026, in the city of Kyoto, Japan.
